Protocol: Street Outreach Conflict Mediation Programs For Reducing Violence, Edward R. Maguire, Cody W. Telep, Thomas Abt, Ericka Adams

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This is a protocol for a Cochrane Review (intervention). The objectives are as follows: This systematic review will synthesize the available evaluation research on the effectiveness of street outreach conflict mediation programs. The review seeks to answer the following primary question: Are street outreach worker strategies that use conflict mediation and/or violence interruption strategies effective at reducing violence? Assuming a sufficient number of eligible studies, this review will also address two additional questions: Are there certain program elements that render these strategies more or less effective? Are there certain conditions under which these strategies are more or less effective? As …

Military Climate Emissions, Nadia B. Ahmad Jun 2024

Military Climate Emissions, Nadia B. Ahmad

Nevada Law Journal

On the third anniversary of the World Health Organization’s declaration of a global pandemic, Gen Z’s first congressional representative, Maxwell Alejandro Frost, advocated for a reduction in the Pentagon’s budget to better serve local communities. This perspective underscores the economic and moral rationale for reallocating national defense funds to communities. The call for defunding the police has gained momentum, paralleling the advocacy for demilitarization. This Article emphasizes the overlooked impact of U.S. military carbon emissions on climate change and advocates for its inclusion in national carbon accounting systems globally. The U.S. Department of Defense has not been transparent about its …

Sacrifice Zones, Jonathan Rosenbloom Jun 2024

Sacrifice Zones, Jonathan Rosenbloom

Nevada Law Journal

Thousands of acres of land have been lost to climate change. Additional thousands, if not millions, of acres will become uninhabitable because of floods, droughts, heatwaves, wildfires, and a host of other known and unknown climate impacts. Yet people continue to build in such areas, adding homes, businesses, infrastructure, and so on, guaranteeing that state and local governments will be perpetually engaged in emergency management and salvage operations into the indefinite future. From a climate change perspective, such construction reduces our resiliency while it increases our vulnerability to the demands of climate change. To prevent this extremely dangerous and expensive …

Climate Reparations, Benoit Mayer Jun 2024

Climate Reparations, Benoit Mayer

Nevada Law Journal

Anthropogenic greenhouse gas (“GHG”) emissions have caused unprecedented change in planetary systems, resulting in tremendous social and ecological impacts. The most vulnerable individuals, communities, and countries are disproportionately affected, even though they are often least responsible for, and benefit less from, these emissions. Some of these countries have claimed reparations for the impacts of climate change impacts for over three decades, but they have achieved little success. Recently, however, these claims have gained some ground. In 2022, the Parties to the Paris Agreement decided to establish “new funding arrangements” to assist developing countries in “responding to loss and damage.” In …

Transitioning To Regenerative Agriculture One French Fry At A Time, Alexia Brunet Marks Jun 2024

Transitioning To Regenerative Agriculture One French Fry At A Time, Alexia Brunet Marks

Nevada Law Journal

Regenerative agriculture—a farming practice that sequesters atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) into the soil—has potential to turn into big business in this climate crisis. If farmers can accurately measure the amount of trapped carbon in their soil, they can sell that stored carbon as a “carbon credit,” a tradeable certificate representing the right to emit one metric ton of carbon dioxide (CO2) or the equivalent amount of another greenhouse gas. As more than seventy countries race to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 in order to meet Paris Agreement1 goals, carbon credits are becoming the “new currency” to meet or exceed …

Truth. Regardless Of Reconciliation?, Michael Moffitt Jun 2024

Truth. Regardless Of Reconciliation?, Michael Moffitt

Nevada Law Journal

Formal responses to historical injustices have typically taken one of two fundamental forms in the past hundred years. The first form is familiar to legal systems—a retributive process in which an adjudicative body measures the conduct of alleged wrongdoers against some set of established standards (think Nuremberg Trials). The second form is often labeled “alternative,” particularly in Western legal systems, despite its long history and increasing prevalence within the past few generations. It focuses on broad inclusion, shared responsibility for the outcomes, and a forward-looking perspective on the next steps beyond or in lieu of traditional criminal sanctions (think South …

Humanitarian Intervention, Its Misuse, And A Proposed Solution Throughthe International Court Of Justice, Michael Pappas Jun 2024

Humanitarian Intervention, Its Misuse, And A Proposed Solution Throughthe International Court Of Justice, Michael Pappas

Nevada Law Journal

Humanitarian interventions are a military tool for the purpose of stopping an ongoing genocide or crime against humanity, and they present a (shaky) legal alternative to the traditional United Nations Security Council resolution for the use of force. Although their legal authority is not formally cemented in international law, there is a growing acceptance of humanitarian interventions among both the international community and scholars for their ability to stop the worst crimes against humanity. However, that growing legitimacy is a double-edged sword because those shaky legal foundations can— and have—been misused by insincere actors, with Russia being the clearest example. …

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Purpose of Review: Despite growing public concern about the negative impact of digital media for mental health problems, there are key ways in which digital media can be leveraged to prevent such outcomes. This article reviews research exploring the ways that digital media, particularly social media, can be used to prevent negative mental health outcomes and promote youth mental health and well-being. Recent findings: Research indicates that media can be protective against mental health problems and promote mental health by enabling social support and destigmatizing mental illness, especially for youth with limited resources. Media also can be leveraged to identify …

Grazing Annual Pastures – Using Feed On Offer (Foo) As A Guide, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia Jun 2024

Grazing Annual Pastures – Using Feed On Offer (Foo) As A Guide, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia

Animal production and livestock factsheets

Grazing management in winter and spring in South West Western Australia (SW WA) can manipulate the quality, quantity and composition of pasture. These pasture changes can increase livestock feed efficiency and productivity, reduce insect populations and improve pasture persistence. Seasonal grazing based on feed on offer (FOO) is described here to maximise stocking rate and pasture production.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development recommends using feed measurements and feed budgeting to increase productivity and reduce livestock health risks.

Grains and other field crops factsheets

Applying gibberellic acid or nitrogen fertiliser to pasture in winter can increase dry matter production of grasses and broadleaf weeds and help reduce feed shortages in winter.

Reduce Crop Weed Seed Numbers In The Soil, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia Jun 2024

Reduce Crop Weed Seed Numbers In The Soil, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia

Grains and other field crops factsheets

There are various methods of weed control in the pre-sowing phase, including removing weed seed numbers in the soil, fallow, stubble, and by various methods. This factsheet covers some of the methods, including:

• Burning crop residues to reduce the surface seed bank of many weeds

• Encouraging insect predation of seed

• Inversion ploughing to bury weed seeds at a depth they can’t germinate

• Autumn tickle to encourage earlier germination of weed seeds for destruction using a knockdown herbicide

• Delaying sowing to allow greater germination of weed seeds for destruction using a knockdown herbicide or cultivation, prior …
