Prenatal Maternal Depression In Canada: Are Current Protocols Adequate?, Britney A. Glasgow-Osment, Farah Wahib, Madeleine Zanin, Shama Kassam

Master's in Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences Graduate Program

Throughout pregnancy, maternal and fetal health are influenced by a multitude of factors. Prenatal maternal depression is one such factor. It is well documented that prenatal maternal depression causes negative pregnancy outcomes for both the mother and baby, including irregular placental function, psychological distress, and pre-term birth, among others. In Ontario, the incidence of prenatal maternal depression is alarmingly high, at 10.3%.As such, the current tools for managing prenatal maternal depression must be effective, efficient, and comprehensive. We hypothesized that the current protocols for screening and treating prenatal maternal depression in Canada are inadequate. To investigate this, a literature review …

9-Axis Motion Tracking To Aid Therapeutic Recovery Via Visualization, Analysis And Progress Monitoring, Megan Wiser, Liam A'Hearn, Christopher Tamayo, Liam Kelly

Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses

This paper presents an innovative approach to enhance at-home physical therapy exercises through the development of a wearable motion tracking system. The proposed system utilizes motion tracking bands worn by patients during exercises, specifically focusing on a squat jump for the initial phase of the project. The bands, placed around the ankle and knee, monitor the alignment of the user's motion and transmit data via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to a dedicated webpage. This webpage integrates real-time data analysis, offering immediate feedback to users, enabling them to monitor their form and track progress over time. The collected data is stored …

There is strong evidence that the implicit biases of health care professionals affect the treatment of patients, and that minority and other marginalized patients are disproportionately harmed. Assumptions made about patient knowledge or lack thereof function as judgments that are prone to bias, which then affect the education and advice imposed upon patients. We review how the motivational interviewing (MI) approach to patient engagement includes components of evidence-based bias-mitigating strategies, such as understanding circumstances from the patient’s point of view, and therefore we propose that the MI approach can reduce the impact of bias in patient care.

The Second Amendment’S Domestic Violence Problem: How Rahimi Exposes The Flaws Of Bruen’S Problematic Historical Analogue Test, Conner Greene Jun 2024

The Second Amendment’S Domestic Violence Problem: How Rahimi Exposes The Flaws Of Bruen’S Problematic Historical Analogue Test, Conner Greene

Cleveland State Law Review

This Article exposes the flaws of the Supreme Court’s historical analogue test established in Bruen. It details how modern Second Amendment jurisprudence evolved to a tenuous position through Heller and McDonald where the Supreme Court seemingly acknowledged the applicability of means-end scrutiny to the Second Amendment, before the Supreme Court more recently repudiated its use in Bruen in lieu of an inherently flimsy history-only standard that fails to account for modern societal issues. This approach not only severely undermines modern gun regulations—unanimously upheld as constitutional pre-Bruen—but it elevates the Second Amendment to a special status unlike other …

A Model For Understanding Cedaw’S Impact On Implementing Gender Equality Reforms: Lessons From Canada And India, Amanda L. Stephens Jun 2024

A Model For Understanding Cedaw’S Impact On Implementing Gender Equality Reforms: Lessons From Canada And India, Amanda L. Stephens

Cleveland State Law Review

This Article provides a model for examining the impact of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (“CEDAW”) on implementing gender equality reforms using Canada and India, two CEDAW State Parties, as case studies. It also explores the influence of heteropatriarchy, deeply-rooted cultural norms perpetuating gender inequality, on hindering CEDAW’s ratification in the United States, as well as CEDAW’s effectiveness in implementing reforms in Canada and India. The analysis showcases how non-governmental organizations (“NGOs”) in these countries have nevertheless achieved limited successes through their mobilization of CEDAW to address specific gender injustices, such as gender …

Federated Learning Based Autoencoder Ensemble System For Malware Detection On Internet Of Things Devices, Steven Edward Arroyo Jun 2024

Federated Learning Based Autoencoder Ensemble System For Malware Detection On Internet Of Things Devices, Steven Edward Arroyo

Theses and Dissertations

New technologies are being introduced at a rate faster than ever before and smaller in size. Due to the size of these devices, security is often difficult to implement. The existing solution is a firewall-segmented “IoT Network” that only limits the effect of these infected devices on other parts of the network. We propose a lightweight unsupervised hybrid-cloud ensemble anomaly detection system for malware detection. We perform transfer learning using a generalized model trained on multiple IoT device sources to learn network traffic on new devices with minimal computational resources. We further extend our proposed system to utilize federated learning …

Dataset For Induced Resonance And Forces Imparted On Buildings From Volcano Infrasound, Owen A. Walsh, Jeffrey B. Johnson, Jerry C. Mock Jun 2024

Dataset For Induced Resonance And Forces Imparted On Buildings From Volcano Infrasound, Owen A. Walsh, Jeffrey B. Johnson, Jerry C. Mock

Boise State University Infrasound Data Repository

Fuego, an active volcano in Guatemala, explodes regularly and generates powerful infrasound whose amplitude regularly exceeds 10 Pa at 10 km where rural communities are located. This study focuses on infrasound recorded at the Fuego Volcano Observatory, a ~250 m3 building located ~8 km from the vent. Records from infrasound sensors situated on either side of a wall facing the volcano were used to measure differential dynamic pressures of more than 50 Pa imparted on the wall facing the volcano. We calculated the building’s infrasonic response as a function of frequency for situations where interior doors were both open and …

Chapter 1 introduces computational strategies in computer aided drug design (CADD), focusing on physics-based methodologies to enhance drug discovery. This chapter also discusses the theoretical foundations and practical applications of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations including free energy and stochastic kinetic analysis. In Chapter 2, CADD methods lead to development of inhibitors targeting the RNA Dependent RNA Polymerase (RdRP) of SARS-CoV-2. Inspired by the nucleotide inhibitor Molnupiravir, we aim to design a combinatorial library of 72 novel inhibitors capable of impeding a dual threat inhibition mechanism inducing lethal mutations along with stalling viral replication with specific selectivity to RdRp over Human …

Applying Decolonizing Theories And Methodologies In Archaeology To Two Collaborative Cultural Resource Management Projects, Cydney K. Lanthier Jun 2024

Applying Decolonizing Theories And Methodologies In Archaeology To Two Collaborative Cultural Resource Management Projects, Cydney K. Lanthier

Dissertations and Theses

Decolonizing theories and methods were employed during two separate graduate research projects. The methods of the initial project were informed by political ecology, the landscape-level historical ecology theory, Tribal sovereignty, traditional ecological knowledge (TEK), Indigenous archaeology, and community based participatory research (CBPR). The initial project was based entirely on CBPR and purposed to gain National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) nomination as a Traditional Cultural Property (TCP) over a portion of the traditional landscape. This project was cancelled before completion. However, several methods involved in CBPR were employed before then. The second project took on more of the historical ecology …

Introduction: Pubertal attainment is critical to reproductive longevity in heifers. Previously, four heifer pubertal classifications were identified according to attainment of blood plasma progesterone concentrations > 1 ng/ml: 1) Early; 2) Typical; 3) Start-Stop; and 4) Non-Cycling. Early and Typical heifers initiated and maintained cyclicity, Start-Stop started and then stopped cyclicity and Non- Cycling never initiated cyclicity. Start-Stop heifers segregated into Start-Stop- Discontinuous (SSD) or Start-Stop-Start (SSS), with SSD having similar phenotypes to Non-Cycling and SSS to Typical heifers. We hypothesized that these pubertal classifications are heritable, and loci associated with pubertal classifications could be identified by genome wide association …

Incorporating Oxygen Isotopes Of Oxidized Reactive Nitrogen In The Regional Atmospheric Chemistry Mechanism, Version 2 (Icoin-Racm2), Wendell W. Walter, Masayuki Takeuchi, Nga L. Ng, Meredith G. Hastings

Faculty Publications

The oxygen isotope anomaly (Δ17O = δ17O − 0.52 × δ18O > 0) has proven to be a robust tool for probing photochemical cycling and atmospheric formation pathways of oxidized reactive nitrogen (NOy). Several studies have developed modeling techniques to implicitly model Δ17O of NOy molecules based on numerous assumptions that may not always be valid. Thus, these models may be oversimplified and limit our ability to compare model Δ17O values of NOy with observations. In this work, we introduce a novel method for explicitly tracking Δ …

Washington V. Glucksberg’S Original Meaning, Marc Spindelman Jun 2024

Washington V. Glucksberg’S Original Meaning, Marc Spindelman

Cleveland State Law Review

This Article elaborates and defends Washington v. Glucksberg’s original meaning both on its own terms and against accounts of Glucksberg that depict it as having announced and followed a strict test of history and tradition as its basic approach to Fourteenth Amendment substantive due process rights.

The nominal occasion for the present return to Glucksberg and its original meaning is the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. Dobbs famously insists that Glucksberg supplies it with the authoritative grounds in the Court’s Fourteenth Amendment substantive due process jurisprudence for its own history-and-tradition-based approach to Roe v. …

Losing My Religion: How Ministerial Exception Expansion May Negatively Impact Interpretation Of C.R.O.W.N. Act Laws, Ashley Corbin Rice

Cleveland State Law Review

Across the country, black students are policed in schools for their natural hair and protective hairstyles. As a result of this, students who do not conform to their school’s grooming policy or dress code may suffer stiff consequences including being suspended or expelled. The most notable federal piece of legislation in response to this issue was introduced in December 2019. The CROWN Act prohibits race-based hair discrimination on the federal level. The bill passed the House but the Senate blocked it in December 2021.

Despite this recent development, states and municipalities are enacting the CROWN Act across the country. Over …

Digital Gaming And Exercise Among Youth With Type 1 Diabetes: Cross-Sectional Analysis Of Data From The Type 1 Diabetes Exercise Initiative Pediatric Study., Susana R. Patton, Robin L. Gal, Simon Bergford, Peter Calhoun, Mark A. Clements, Jennifer L. Sherr, Michael C. Riddell

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

BACKGROUND: Regular physical activity and exercise are fundamental components of a healthy lifestyle for youth living with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Yet, few youth living with T1D achieve the daily minimum recommended levels of physical activity. For all youth, regardless of their disease status, minutes of physical activity compete with other daily activities, including digital gaming. There is an emerging area of research exploring whether digital games could be displacing other physical activities and exercise among youth, though, to date, no studies have examined this question in the context of youth living with T1D.

OBJECTIVE: We examined characteristics of digital …

Mutations in the DYSF gene, encoding the protein dysferlin, lead to several forms of muscular dystrophy. In healthy skeletal muscle, dysferlin concentrates in the transverse tubules and is involved in repairing the sarcolemma and stabilizing Ca2+ signaling after membrane disruption. The DYSF gene encodes 7-8 C2 domains, several Fer and Dysf domains, and a C-terminal transmembrane sequence. Because its coding sequence is too large to package in adeno-associated virus, the full-length sequence is not amenable to current gene delivery methods. Thus, we have examined smaller versions of dysferlin, termed "nanodysferlins," designed to eliminate several C2 domains, specifically C2 domains D, …
