The Failure Of German Naval Force Design, 1928–39, Mark Stanovich

Naval War College Review

In the early years of World War II, Germany came perilously close to cutting off Great Britain’s vital sea-lanes. The ultimate failure can be traced to force-design mistakes in the decade prior to war, illuminating the political, industrial, and strategic challenges facing nations redesigning their force structures today.

"Study, Not Doctrine: Prioritizing History In Jpme, Thomas M. Duffy Jun 2024

"Study, Not Doctrine: Prioritizing History In Jpme, Thomas M. Duffy

Joint Force Quarterly

The article explores the unpredictable and uncertain nature of war, arguing that understanding war requires a descriptive rather than a predictive approach. Strategic forecasting often fails, and the true nature of war is often only clear in hindsight. By examining historical conflicts, we can anticipate challenges in future conflicts. The article seeks to determine the best way to study war to enhance the strategic judgment of future leaders. It emphasizes the importance of a long-term perspective, focusing on the constantly changing character of war rather than the unchanging nature. A history-led approach can create a foundation for future military strategies.

Getting The Best Out Of Joint Warfighter Development, Charles Davis, Jeffrey Turner, Mary Bell Jun 2024

Getting The Best Out Of Joint Warfighter Development, Charles Davis, Jeffrey Turner, Mary Bell

Joint Force Quarterly

The article explores whether the Department of Defense (DoD) is producing optimal joint warfighters for U.S. military operations. Joint warfighting, crucial for conducting effective joint operations, requires leaders with a joint mindset. The development of skilled joint warfighters hinges on three key elements: balanced Service representation, experienced faculty, and a rigorous curriculum. The Joint Advanced Warfighting School (JAWS) at the National Defense University exemplifies this integration, emphasizing proportional Service representation, faculty with extensive joint experience, and practical exercises to foster collaboration and interdependence. The article stresses the increasing need for joint warfighters capable of planning and executing complex, multidomain operations.

Impact Of Covid-19 On Disaggregate Consumption And Online Retail Sales: Evidence From The Usa, Gulzar Ahmed, Olcay Akman

Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics

This study applies the difference-in-difference technique to analyze the consumption pattern during COVID-19 against pre-COVID-19 years. We analyze the online retail sales before and after COVID-19 using time series and linear regression models. Time series intervention analysis results suggest that COVID-19 has caused a statistically significant change in the mean level of online retail sales share in e-commerce. Using a difference-in-difference approach, we find a 4% decrease in aggregate consumption from March to December 2020 compared to the benchmark period although statistically insignificant. Further, using a fixed effects model with time dummies, we find a nearly 8% significant decrease in …

Organization Of Traffic On The Main Streets Microcontroller Traffic Lights, Ali Saif Aldeen Aubaid Khioon, Rusul Hussein Hasan, Riyam Noori Jawad, Rasha Majid Hassoon, Inaam Salman Aboud Jun 2024

Organization Of Traffic On The Main Streets Microcontroller Traffic Lights, Ali Saif Aldeen Aubaid Khioon, Rusul Hussein Hasan, Riyam Noori Jawad, Rasha Majid Hassoon, Inaam Salman Aboud

Al-Bahir

Traffic congestion at densely populated intersections and large numbers of vehicles negatively affect people's lives. Due to this, governments try to regulate the flow of traffic in an attempt to reduce traffic congestion. A static control system may prevent emergency vehicles because of traffic jams. Traffic light systems (TLs) have acquired increasing attention in avoiding road jams and traffic detection. They are ubiquitous because of their easy installation, faster information transformation, less maintenance, less compact, and cheaper than other networks' options. The proposed TLs use IR sensors to measure vehicle density and in each instruction, there is a microcontroller that …

Chylous Ascites As A Contributor To Severe Malnutrition In Advanced Cirrhosis: A Case Report, Catherine M. Call, Michael Gilleo, Zhyldyz Kabaeva Jun 2024

Chylous Ascites As A Contributor To Severe Malnutrition In Advanced Cirrhosis: A Case Report, Catherine M. Call, Michael Gilleo, Zhyldyz Kabaeva

Journal of Maine Medical Center

Introduction: Chylous ascites is the accumulation of chyle, a triglyceride and calorie-rich fluid, in the peritoneal cavity. It develops when the intra-abdominal lymphatics that contain chyle are damaged. It is a rare complication of liver cirrhosis that affects less than 1% of patients with this condition. Prompt identification may allow for treatment of associated caloric wasting.

Clinical Findings: A 52-year-old woman with alcohol-related cirrhosis and refractory transudative ascites presented for her second scheduled revision of a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt. She had confusion, constipation, worsening ascites, and severe malnutrition with muscle wasting (body mass index 12.6). The procedure was deferred, …

Identifying Overdose Risk Factors For People Hospitalized With Injection Drug Use-Associated Infections In Maine, Melanie Mait, Kim Murray, Tania D. Strout, Kinna Thakarar

Journal of Maine Medical Center

Introduction: The overdose crisis continues to be a significant problem, particularly in rural states such as Maine. The objectives of this study were to: 1) describe demographic and health characteristics and 2) identify overdose risk factors among people in Maine hospitalized with injection drug use (IDU)-associated infections.

Methods: We performed descriptive analysis of demographics, health characteristics, and injection practices, stratified by lifetime history of overdose. We conducted an exploratory logistic regression analysis, controlling for gender, homelessness, having experienced an emergency department (ED) visit in the past 3-months, and endorsement of injecting alone in the past 30 days to examine …
