The Hidden Forms Of Violence In The Lives Of Professional Women In Tagamoa, New Cairo, Nouran Elhariry
The Hidden Forms Of Violence In The Lives Of Professional Women In Tagamoa, New Cairo, Nouran Elhariry
Theses and Dissertations
The desire to craft new lifestyles is the main drive for the relocation to New Cairo among Egypt’s upper middle classes. This research is focusing on the upper middle class--people who still rely on their incomes from working to maintain their status—as opposed to the elite upper class, who rely on incomes from property, investments, inheritance, and other forms of intergenerational wealth. These communities were enmeshed in high degrees of domestic violence. The power-relations reconfigured in the domestic sphere, with increasing numbers of upper middle class women embarking on professional careers while navigating households and family relations, have opened the …

Plum curculio is a brown weevil (beetle with a snout) native to eastern North America, where it is a major pest of pome and stone fruits. It was detected in Box Elder County, Utah, in the early 1980s, and this population remains the only known infestation in western North America, where it is occasionally found in residential and wild fruit trees. Plum curculio is a quarantine pest in western North America (U.S. and Canada), and fruit grown in infested counties is restricted from being exported. Thus, it is a threat to Utah’s fruit industry and requires ongoing monitoring and management …
Cow-Calf Retained Ownership Analysis And Price Forecasting Using An Online Decision-Support Tool, Dillon M. Feuz
Cow-Calf Retained Ownership Analysis And Price Forecasting Using An Online Decision-Support Tool, Dillon M. Feuz
All Current Publications
Cow-calf producers frequently must make the decision to either sell their calves at weaning or soon thereafter or retain ownership of the calves through a background/growing phase. While the price they might receive at weaning may be known, there is great uncertainty about what cattle prices might be at the end of the retained ownership program. This fact sheet explains a method for reducing some of the uncertainty with cattle prices when the sale will occur months in the future and introduces a web-based decision-support tool that can help cattle producers quickly analyze the potential returns and risks from various …

A Signal Injection Attack Against Zero Involvement Pairing And Authentication For The Internet Of Things, Isaac Ahlgren, Jack West, Kyu In Lee, George Thiruvathukal, Neil Klingensmith
Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Zero Involvement Pairing and Authentication (ZIPA) is a promising technique for autoprovisioning large networks of Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices. In this work, we present the first successful signal injection attack on a ZIPA system. Most existing ZIPA systems assume there is a negligible amount of influence from the unsecured outside space on the secured inside space. In reality, environmental signals do leak from adjacent unsecured spaces and influence the environment of the secured space. Our attack takes advantage of this fact to perform a signal injection attack on the popular Schurmann & Sigg algorithm. The keys generated by the adversary with …

The dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) is implicated in psychiatric disorders that feature impaired sensitivity to reward amount, impulsivity when facing reward delays, and risk-seeking when confronting reward uncertainty. However, it has been unclear whether and how DRN neurons signal reward amount, reward delay, and reward uncertainty during multi-attribute value-based decision-making, where subjects consider these attributes to make a choice. We recorded DRN neurons as monkeys chose between offers whose attributes, namely expected reward amount, reward delay, and reward uncertainty, varied independently. Many DRN neurons signaled offer attributes, and this population tended to integrate the attributes in a manner that reflected …

The lymphatic fluid is the conduit by which part of the tissue "omics" is transported to the draining lymph node for immunosurveillance. Following cannulation of the pre-nodal cervical and mesenteric afferent lymphatics, herein we investigate the lymph proteomic composition, uncovering that its composition varies according to the tissue of origin. Tissue specificity is also reflected in the dendritic cell-major histocompatibility complex class II-eluted immunopeptidome harvested from the cervical and mesenteric nodes. Following inflammatory disruption of the gut barrier, the lymph antigenic and inflammatory loads are analyzed in both mice and subjects with inflammatory bowel diseases. Gastrointestinal tissue damage reflects the …

Advancing our understanding of brain function and developing treatments for neurological diseases hinge on the ability to modulate neuronal groups in specific brain areas without invasive techniques. Here, we introduce Airy-beam holographic sonogenetics (AhSonogenetics) as an implant-free, cell type-specific, spatially precise, and flexible neuromodulation approach in freely moving mice. AhSonogenetics utilizes wearable ultrasound devices manufactured using 3D-printed Airy-beam holographic metasurfaces. These devices are designed to manipulate neurons genetically engineered to express ultrasound-sensitive ion channels, enabling precise modulation of specific neuronal populations. By dynamically steering the focus of Airy beams through ultrasound frequency tuning, AhSonogenetics is capable of modulating neuronal populations …

Environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) is a subclinical syndrome of altered small intestinal function postulated to be an important contributor to childhood undernutrition. The role of small intestinal bacterial communities in the pathophysiology of EED is poorly defined due to a paucity of studies where there has been a direct collection of small intestinal samples from undernourished children. Sixty-three members of a Pakistani cohort identified as being acutely malnourished between 3 and 6 months of age and whose wasting (weight-for-length

Acute kidney injury (AKI) strongly upregulates the transcription factor Foxm1 in the proximal tubule in vivo, and Foxm1 drives epithelial proliferation in vitro. Here, we report that deletion of Foxm1 either with a nephron-specific Cre driver or by inducible global deletion reduced proximal tubule proliferation after ischemic injury in vivo. Foxm1 deletion led to increased AKI to chronic kidney disease transition, with enhanced fibrosis and ongoing tubule injury 6 weeks after injury. We report ERK mediated FOXM1 induction downstream of the EGFR in primary proximal tubule cells. We defined FOXM1 genomic binding sites by cleavage under targets and release using …

The increasing usage of interconnected devices within the Internet of Things (IoT) and Industrial IoT (IIoT) has significantly enhanced efficiency and utility in both personal and industrial settings but also heightened cybersecurity vulnerabilities, particularly through IoT malware. This paper explores the use of one-class classification, a method of unsupervised learning, which is especially suitable for unlabeled data, dynamic environments, and malware detection, which is a form of anomaly detection. We introduce the TF-IDF method for transforming nominal features into numerical formats that avoid information loss and manage dimensionality effectively, which is crucial for enhancing pattern recognition when combined with n-grams. …

Solid organ transplantation mobilizes myeloid cells, including monocytes and macrophages, which are central protagonists of allograft rejection. However, myeloid cells can also be functionally reprogrammed by perioperative costimulatory blockade to promote a state of transplantation tolerance. Transplantation tolerance holds promise to reduce complications from chronic immunosuppression and promote long-term survival in transplant recipients. We sought to identify different mediators of transplantation tolerance by performing single-cell RNA sequencing of acute rejecting or tolerized cardiac allografts. This led to the unbiased identification of the transcription factor, hypoxia inducible factor (HIF)-2α, in a subset of tolerogenic monocytes. Using flow cytometric analyses and mice …

The B cell receptor (BCR) signals together with a multi-component co-receptor complex to initiate B cell activation in response to antigen binding. Here, we take advantage of peroxidase-catalyzed proximity labeling combined with quantitative mass spectrometry to track co-receptor signaling dynamics in Raji cells from 10 s to 2 h after BCR stimulation. This approach enables tracking of 2,814 proximity-labeled proteins and 1,394 phosphosites and provides an unbiased and quantitative molecular map of proteins recruited to the vicinity of CD19, the signaling subunit of the co-receptor complex. We detail the recruitment kinetics of signaling effectors to CD19 and identify previously uncharacterized …

Tumor cell plasticity contributes to intratumoral heterogeneity and therapy resistance. Through cell plasticity, some lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) cells transform into neuroendocrine (NE) tumor cells. However, the mechanisms of NE cell plasticity remain unclear. CRACD (capping protein inhibiting regulator of actin dynamics), a capping protein inhibitor, is frequently inactivated in cancers. CRACD knockout (KO) is sufficient to de-repress NE-related gene expression in the pulmonary epithelium and LUAD cells. In LUAD mouse models, Cracd KO increases intratumoral heterogeneity with NE gene expression. Single-cell transcriptomic analysis showed that Cracd KO-induced NE cell plasticity is associated with cell de-differentiation and stemness-related pathway activation. The …

Microplastic records from lake cores can reconstruct the plastic pollution history. However, the associations between anthropogenic activities and microplastic accumulation are not well understood. Huguangyan Maar Lake (HML) is a deep-enclosed lake without inlets and outlets, where the sedimentary environment is ideal for preserving a stable and historical microplastic record. Microplastic (size: 10-500 μm) characteristics in the HML core were identified using the Laser Direct Infrared Imaging system. The earliest detectable microplastics appeared unit in 1955 (1.1 items g-1). The microplastic abundance ranged from n.d. to 615.2 items g-1 in 1955-2019 with an average of 134.9 items …

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia, which is characterised by progressive memory loss and accumulation of hallmark markers amyloid-β (Aβ) and neurofibrillary tangles in the diseased brain. The current gold standard diagnostic methods have limitations of being invasive, costly, and not easily accessible. Thus, there is a need for new avenues, such as imaging the retina for early AD diagnosis. Sleep disruption is symptomatically frequent across preclinical and AD subjects. As circadian activity, such as the sleep-wake cycle, is linked to the retina, analysis of their association may be useful additions for achieving predictive AD diagnosis. …

Underrepresented populations are often excluded from genomic studies owing in part to a lack of resources supporting their analyses. The 1000 Genomes Project (1kGP) and Human Genome Diversity Project (HGDP), which have recently been sequenced to high coverage, are valuable genomic resources because of the global diversity they capture and their open data sharing policies. Here, we harmonized a high-quality set of 4094 whole genomes from 80 populations in the HGDP and 1kGP with data from the Genome Aggregation Database (gnomAD) and identified over 153 million high-quality SNVs, indels, and SVs. We performed a detailed ancestry analysis of this cohort, …

Although it is evident that standard-dose whole-brain radiotherapy as consolidation is associated with significant neurotoxicity, the optimal consolidative strategy for primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is not defined. We performed a randomized phase 2 clinical trial via the US Alliance cancer cooperative group to compare myeloablative consolidation supported by autologous stem cell transplantation with nonmyeloablative consolidation after induction therapy for PCNSL. To our knowledge, this is the first randomized trial to be initiated that eliminates whole-brain radiotherapy as a consolidative approach in newly diagnosed PCNSL. Patients aged 18 to 75 years were randomly assigned in a 1:1 manner to …

The Substance Abuse Mental Health and Human Services Administration (SAMHSA) has set guidelines for opioid prescribing practices. The core principles of SAMHSA are to prevent overdose abuse and to provide appropriate treatment for those with an opioid abuse disorder. The concern addressed by the Doctor of Nursing Practice project was the gap in physician education regarding a Best Practice Alert (BPA) in the Electronic Medical Record that appears when prescribing an opioid to a patient without cancer. The alert indicates best practice is to prescribe naloxone with the opioid prescription. The naloxone BPA education project was implemented using the exploration, …
