Rural Black Women’S Self-Help Activism In The Arkansas Delta, Local Heritage, And Global Resonance: Mrs. Gertha Bailey Trice And The Lee County Self-Help Project, Swity Sultana Monni
Student Theses and Dissertations
In the mid-to-late twentieth century, through outstanding and transformative leadership, rural Black women activists in the Arkansas Delta worked to confront significant problems facing their communities, in the contexts of health, education, and social justice; their efforts were often apolitical in nature, at least overtly. These women went beyond the demands of many mid-twentieth-century civil rights activists to create spaces to articulate and demand human rights, broadly conceived. This in-depth study explores the community activism of Gertha Bailey Trice of Lee County, Arkansas, who engaged in broadly defined African American self-help traditions through her work with the Lee County Self …

Functional Studies Of Dcaf14 In Replication Fork Stability And Genome Integrity, Neysha Tirado-Class
Functional Studies Of Dcaf14 In Replication Fork Stability And Genome Integrity, Neysha Tirado-Class
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The response to replication stress is critical for ensuring the stability of replication forks and preserving genome integrity. To aid this response, several factors are recruited to stalled replication forks to prevent irreversible collapse of the replication machinery. Replication fork proteomic analyses of stalled forks reveal enrichment of DCAF14, a component of the Cullin4-RING (CRL4) E3 ubiquitin ligase complex, that mediates replication fork protection by blocking nuclease-mediated digestion of nascent DNA. However, little is known about the molecular mechanism by which DCAF14 functions in the context of replication stress. Notably, loss of function mutations in DCAF14 are associated with a …
Aerobic And Anaerobic Exercise's Impact On Cognitive Functions In Eighth Grade Students., Heather Erwin, Sarah Schreiber
Aerobic And Anaerobic Exercise's Impact On Cognitive Functions In Eighth Grade Students., Heather Erwin, Sarah Schreiber
Kinesiology and Health Promotion Faculty Publications
The present study examined the impact of aerobic and anaerobic exercise on cognitive abilities in eighth grade students at one middle school in southeastern US. It is known that youth do not meet recommended physical activity levels, yet there is research demonstrating a clear connection between aerobic exercise and academic performance. There is a gap in evidence regarding anaerobic exercise and cognitive capabilities. If professionals know which type of exercise is most beneficial for enhancing cognition in youth, it will behoove them to incorporate these practices in physical education and other areas throughout the school day for students. Thus, this …

Exploring Spin Dynamics Using Time-Resolved Magneto-Optic Kerr Effect Spectroscopy, Arup Barua
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The interaction between light and matter plays a crucial role in numerous systems, including optoelectronicdevices such as Photodiode (PD), Laser diode (LD), LED, solar cells to even biological components like photosystem II, and potential upcoming quantum technologies. Light is absorbed or emitted usually at a scale smaller than a nanometer, with associated processes happening within attosecond to picosecond durations. It is known that in a vacuum, static magnetic fields do not affect light. On the other hand, the magnetic field or magnetization of a material affects the light that passes through or is reflected by the material. The magneto-optic effect …
Group B Streptococcus Intestinal Barrier Disruption And The Protective Role Of Butyrate, Kristen Dominguez
Group B Streptococcus Intestinal Barrier Disruption And The Protective Role Of Butyrate, Kristen Dominguez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Group B Streptococcus (Streptococcus agalactiae; GBS) is a leading cause of neonatal sepsis worldwide. Intrapartum antibiotics in GBS-colonized mothers significantly reduced the incidence of early-onset sepsis occurring in the first week of life; however, there are currently no prophylactic interventions for late-onset sepsis, occurring within the first 3 months of life. GBS is a pathobiont that primarily colonizes the gastrointestinal tract and can cross the intestinal barrier via both the paracellular and transcellular routes, causing invasive disease. Neonatal susceptibility to GBS intestinal translocation is mediated by inadequate epithelial barrier function and microbiome immaturity; however, the mechanisms by which GBS exploits …
Antarctic Atmosphere-Ocean-Ice Interactions During Past Warm Climates: An Ice-Proximal Perspective, Imogen Mireille Browne
Antarctic Atmosphere-Ocean-Ice Interactions During Past Warm Climates: An Ice-Proximal Perspective, Imogen Mireille Browne
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Antarctica’s ice sheets contain 58 m of sea level equivalent ice and thus exert a fundamental control on global sea level on decadal to million-year timescales. Interactions between Antarctica’s ice sheets, regional atmospheric circulation, and the Southern Ocean influence ice sheet mass balance, sea ice formation, and deep water production, which regulate Earth’s climate. At present, Antarctica’s fringing ice shelves and outlet glaciers, particularly in West Antarctica, are losing mass as warm ocean waters move landward across the continental shelves, melting the underside of ice shelves and eroding glacial grounding lines. In East Antarctica, net ice mass gain is occurring …
Advances In Model Reference Adaptive Control: Exploring Gain Scheduling, Scalability, And Time-Varying Command Following, Jesse Jaramillo
Advances In Model Reference Adaptive Control: Exploring Gain Scheduling, Scalability, And Time-Varying Command Following, Jesse Jaramillo
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Feedback control architectures are fundamental for achieving a desired response in physical systems. A robust and reliable design must account for system uncertainties and exogenous disturbances, which may arise from phenomena such as modeling approximations, nonlinearities, degraded modes of operations, wind gusts, or structural impairments. Two widely recognized methods to mitigate the negative impact of uncertainties and disturbances are robust and adaptive control architectures. Specifically, robust control designs ensure stability by considering a worst-case scenario, which can potentially lead to suboptimal performance or steady-state errors depending on the nature of the uncertainty. In contrast, adaptive control designs offer the capability …

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations
Sjögren syndrome (SS) is a long-lasting inflammatory autoimmune disease that may cause diverse manifestations, particularly osteoporosis. Though usage of Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) can safely manage autoimmune disease and treatment-related symptoms, the relation between CHM use and osteoporosis risk in SS persons is not yet recognized. With that in mind, this population-level nested case-control study aimed to compare the risk of osteoporosis with and without CHM use. Potential subjects aged 20–70 years, diagnosed with SS between 2001 and 2010, were retrieved from a national health claims database. Those diagnosed with osteoporosis after SS were identified and randomly matched to those …

Self And Tell: Exploring Identity Through Music, Logen Crandall
Honors Theses
My honors thesis is a five-song EP titled ‘self and tell’. It is considered an EP (Extended Play) because it is longer than one song but shorter than an album. As an English: Creative Writing major, I wanted to write something for my thesis that truly excited me. However, I was ignited by the thought of writing an essay, play, collection of poems, or work of fiction. As someone who has always had a passion for music and singing, I instead chose to use my knowledge of poetry and storytelling to write lyrics that followed a central theme from one …

Photodegradation And Microencapsulation Of Organic Thermochromic Material For Application As Building Coating Envelope, Sushant Madhukar Nagare
Photodegradation And Microencapsulation Of Organic Thermochromic Material For Application As Building Coating Envelope, Sushant Madhukar Nagare
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Due to exponential urbanization, residential building electrical loads have increased over the past decades. Also, deforestation has led to increased urban heat island effects, due to which summer has been scorching and winter has become freezing. This further increases the load on generation due to the extensive use of heating and cooling systems. New techniques, such as cool building materials and green building concepts, compensate for the load. The building can be coated with a material that has heat reflectivity capability for summer and heat-trapping capability for winter. One such material is thermochromic, which turns white upon heating and black …

In this nonpayment case, landlord seeks possession of the unregulated premises due to rental arrears. Tenant moves to dismiss, citing defects in the petition under the recently enacted Good Cause Eviction Law (GCEL), arguing that the landlord failed to comply with new pleading requirements. Landlord cross-moves to amend the petition to conform to GCEL. The court grants tenant's motion in part, allowing the proposed amended answer to be filed, but denies dismissal. The landlord's motion to amend the petition is also granted, as the petition was filed before GCEL's effective date, and there was no showing of prejudice to the …

Leveraging Video Situation Monitoring In Assisted Living Environment, Hafsa Billah, Abhishek Santra, Sharma Chakravarthy
Association of Computing Machinery Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive
Video situation monitoring is essential for various applications such as surveillance and monitoring and societal applications (e.g., senior care or Assisted Living (AL) monitoring). Quality of life can be significantly improved in AL environments if various situations (e.g., monitoring community engagement, inactivity for a long time, etc.) can be analyzed automatically. These situations are currently monitored using manual analysis or custom solutions. The manual analysis process uses human-in-the-loop to watch videos exhaustively, and it is not practical and scalable for videos with long duration. On the other hand, custom solutions require each situation to be predefined and typically use sensors, …

In this paper, we address the challenge of detecting cognitive fatigue, a condition marked by diminished cognitive capabilities during prolonged mental exertion, through a novel approach using the Residual Graph Convolutional Network (ResGCN) from the gait of individuals. Recognizing the limitations of traditional fatigue detection methods that rely on physiological signals like EEG, our research proposes a more accessible and unobtrusive technique by analyzing gait videos of individuals. Our model utilizes graph neural networks to encode the spatial positions of joint keypoints extracted from these videos via OpenPose, hypothesizing that cognitive fatigue manifests in altered body postures during walking. This …

Stock Price Trend Prediction Using Emotion Analysis Of Financial Headlines With Distilled Llm Model, Rithesh Harish Bhat, Bhanu Jain
Association of Computing Machinery Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive
Capturing the volatility of stock prices helps individual traders, stock analysts, and institutions alike increase their returns in the stock market. Financial news headlines have been shown to have a significant effect on stock price mobility. Lately, many financial portals have restricted web scraping of stock prices and other related financial data of companies from their websites. In this study we demonstrate that emotion analysis of financial news headlines alone can be sufficient in predicting stock price movement, even in the absence of any financial data. We propose an approach that eliminates the need for web scraping of financial data. …

Hand-crafted features to detect idiolect (individual language style) in short text passages with k-means clustering differentiate individuals based on stylistic indicators. With a relatively small number of input samples and low computational resources, results are comparable to larger-scale methods and are human interpretable. The features make use of common stylometry attributes. An entropybased measure evaluates feature contribution.
