Viscusi Circular A-4 Peer Review Comments, W. Kip Viscusi

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This working paper provides commentary on my 2023 peer review panel comments on the 2023 Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Circular A-4. The Prologue section introduces my official peer review comments and indicates how the structure of my comments was tailored to the guidelines established by the OMB. The main section consists of my 2023 peer review comments as they were submitted to OMB. I recommended changes in the draft Circular A-4 to increase the discount rate from the 1.7% rate that OMB proposed, to report domestic benefits whenever global benefits are reported, to adopt a behavioral transfer test …

Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine Faculty Papers

IMPORTANCE: In-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) is a significant public health burden. Rates of return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) have been improving, but the best way to care for patients after the initial resuscitation remains poorly understood, and improvements in survival to discharge are stagnant. Existing North American cardiac arrest databases lack comprehensive data on the post-resuscitation period, and we do not know current post-IHCA practice patterns. To address this gap, we developed the Discover In-Hospital Cardiac Arrest (Discover IHCA) study, which will thoroughly evaluate current post-IHCA care practices across a diverse cohort.

OBJECTIVES: Our study collects granular data on post-IHCA …

A Time-Stratified, Case–Crossover Study Of Heat Exposure And Perinatal Mortality From 16 Hospitals In Sub-Saharan Africa, Claudia Hanson, Jeroen De Bont, Kristi Sidney Annerstedt, Maria Del Rosario Alsina, Federica Nobile, Nathalie Roos, Peter Waiswa, Andrea Pembe, Jean-Paul Dossou, Hussein Kidanto

Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health

Growing evidence suggests that extreme heat events affect both pregnant women and their infants, but few studies are available from sub-Saharan Africa. Using data from 138,015 singleton births in 16 hospitals in Benin, Malawi, Tanzania and Uganda, we investigated the association between extreme heat and early perinatal deaths, including antepartum and intrapartum stillbirths, and deaths within 24 h after birth using a time-stratified case–crossover design. We observed an association between an increase from the 75th to the 99th percentile in mean temperature 1 week (lag 0–6 d) before childbirth and perinatal mortality (odds ratio (OR) = 1.34 (95% confidence interval …

Exploring Situational And Task-Specific Interaction Experiences Of Interprofessional Collaborative Practice Among Healthcare Professionals, Chia-Lun Lee, Yu-Chih Lin, Ling-Chun Ou, Shu-Yuan Lin

Journal of Medical Education

Background: Interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) is integral to enhancing healthcare delivery and outcomes, built upon core competencies including communication, teamwork, and professional identity. However, situational factors and task-specific demands significantly influence IPCP implementation, particularly in diverse clinical settings. This descriptive qualitative study explored the interaction experiences and situational professional identity of healthcare professionals (HCPs) engaged in IPCP. Methods: Purposive sampling identified 31 HCPs from 11 disciplines, who participated in four focus group interviews. A semi-structured guide facilitated discussions, and thematic analysis was conducted to identify key themes and subthemes. Results: Three major themes emerged: (1) professional identity embedded in team …

Son Preference In India, Susan May Watts Sep 2024

Son Preference In India, Susan May Watts

Ballard Brief

Son preference, based on the belief that sons are more valuable than daughters, creates environments where girls are neglected and discriminated against all over the world. India has one of the strongest cultures of son preference, as evidenced by its abnormal sex ratio at birth (SRB) of 110 boys born for every 100 girls. Son preference in India is caused by cultural norms placing sons in positions of importance, as sons are tasked with performing funeral rites for parents, supporting parents financially, and taking care of their parents in their old age. Additionally, having daughters is a financial burden on …

Woman Abuse In Sports-Related Contexts: Social Scientific Knowledge, Walter Dekeseredy Sep 2024

Woman Abuse In Sports-Related Contexts: Social Scientific Knowledge, Walter Dekeseredy

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

There was a vibrant surge in the 1980s and 1990s of social scientific work on men’s abuse of women in sports-related contexts, but this wave receded over the past two decades and eventually disappeared. Recently, however, an international cadre of scholars has revisited the off- and online victimization of women in these settings. The main objective of this paper is to examine what the extant scholarly literature tells and does not tell us about this social problem.

A Chance To See Me: Exploring Black Males’ Perspectives On Public Education Regarding The School-To-Prison Pipeline, Renee Duffaut Sep 2024

A Chance To See Me: Exploring Black Males’ Perspectives On Public Education Regarding The School-To-Prison Pipeline, Renee Duffaut

JWU Dissertations & Theses

In the United States, race undeniably remains at the heart of the educational experiences of Black males. For decades, researchers have studied how schools systemically “push out” and reroute Black males to prison at a disproportionate rate by enforcing inequitable discipline policies and practices (Annamma et al., 2019; Leung-Gagné, 2022; Scott et al., 2017; Skiba et al., 2011). Black children are disciplined for minor infractions at higher rates than any other ethnic group which increases their likelihood of becoming caught up in the School-to-Prison Pipeline (Amemiya et al., 2020). Forty-two percent of youths in juvenile justice placement are Black, even …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Periodontal disease constitutes a widely prevalent category of non-communicable diseases and ranks among the top 10 causes of disability worldwide. Little however is known about diagnostic errors in dentistry. In this work, by retrospectively deploying an electronic health record (EHR)-based trigger tool, followed by gold standard manual review, we provide epidemiological estimates on the rate of diagnostic misclassification in dentistry through a periodontal use case.

Methods: An EHR-based trigger tool (a retrospective record review instrument that uses a list of triggers (or clues), i.e., data elements within the health record, to alert reviewers to the potential presence of a …

For centuries, acequias and small grist mills in northern New Mexico villages played a major role in the agricultural economy of the region following the introduction of wheat from the Old World to the Americas. Wheat, in its ground form as flour, was a staple during the Spanish colonial period of the region. To process raw wheat, local mills (molinos) were essential infrastructure as were the acequias (ditches) that powered them. Most molinos were built from logs and were situated near the banks of watercourses. The wheel and axle were driven by the gravity force of water drawn …

Meta-Analysis Identifies Key Genes And Pathways Implicated In Benzo[A]Pyrene Exposure Response, Mingze Zhu, Jooyeon Hwang, Chao Xu

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Introduction: Benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) is a carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon that poses significant risks to human health. B[a]P influences cellular processes via intricate interactions; however, a comprehensive understanding of B[a]P's effects on the transcriptome remains elusive. This study aimed to conduct a comprehensive analysis focused on identifying relevant genes and signaling pathways affected by B[a]P exposure and their impact on human gene expression.

Methods: We searched the Gene Expression Omnibus database and identified four studies involving B[a]P exposure in human cells (T lymphocytes, hepatocellular carcinoma cells, and C3A cells). We utilized two approaches for differential expression analysis: the LIMMA package and …
