Mental Health Screening In Lawyer Licensing, Grahm Ambrose, Brianne Holland-Sergar, Nora Freeman Engstrom Sep 2024

Mental Health Screening In Lawyer Licensing, Grahm Ambrose, Brianne Holland-Sergar, Nora Freeman Engstrom

Faculty Journal Articles & Other Writings

This report examines the role of mental health screening in lawyer licensing, focusing on its evolution, current practices, and criticisms. It highlights concerns that such screening may discourage treatment, perpetuate stigma, and lack empirical support for improving public protection. While many states have shifted from broad inquiries into diagnoses and treatment history toward narrower questions about conduct or impairment, most still retain some form of screening. The report also reviews legal, ethical, and practical challenges, including potential conflicts with disability law. Overall, it concludes that although reforms have reduced intrusiveness, significant debate remains about the necessity and effectiveness of mental …

Disrupting Vocational Awe: Strategies For Supervisors To Identify, Counter, And Prevent Unsustainable Workloads And Unreasonable Expectations, Amanda Koziura, Amy Tureen Sep 2024

Disrupting Vocational Awe: Strategies For Supervisors To Identify, Counter, And Prevent Unsustainable Workloads And Unreasonable Expectations, Amanda Koziura, Amy Tureen

Library Faculty Research

This chapter provides practical recommendations for supervisors on combating the impacts of vocational awe and its resulting unsustainable workloads and unreasonable workplace expectations. We focus on supervisors because they are generally more empowered to make structural changes to employee responsibilities and job descriptions than are employees themselves. Tis formal authority to adjust work- loads in response to changing external factors renders supervisors key players in reducing organizationally embedded vocational awe and the results thereof.

Gamifying Energy Management: Leveraging Lokalytica Smartmeter For Sustainable Future, Emilio Roman Perez, King Harold A. Recto Sep 2024

Gamifying Energy Management: Leveraging Lokalytica Smartmeter For Sustainable Future, Emilio Roman Perez, King Harold A. Recto

Electronics, Computer, and Communications Engineering Faculty Publications

The gamification of software applications has emerged as an effective strategy to enhance user engagement and promote desired behaviors. This paper explores the gamification of the Lokalytica SmartMeter application, an energy management platform that leverages data from meter readings through its users. By incorporating a challenge-based system and a points-based leaderboard, Lokalytica rewards users who reduce their energy consumption. The gamification application of Lokalytica was built using NextJS, a full-stack framework, along with Tailwind CSS and DaisyUI for UI design, MongoDB Atlas for the database, and GitHub for version control, collaboration, and tracking. This paper discusses the development process, the …

‘Constellations’ And ‘Entanglement’ In The Study Of Legal Pluralism: Reflections On The Scholarship Of Keebet Von Benda-Beckmann, Petra K. Mahy Dr Sep 2024

‘Constellations’ And ‘Entanglement’ In The Study Of Legal Pluralism: Reflections On The Scholarship Of Keebet Von Benda-Beckmann, Petra K. Mahy Dr

The Indonesian Journal of Socio-Legal Studies

Two key terms permeate the work of Keebet von Benda-Beckmann (and of her co-authors, especially Franz von Benda-Beckmann) in her discussions of legal pluralism: ‘constellations’ and ‘entanglement’. These terms are both concerned with describing the existence of, and interrelationships between, plural legal orders. This article critically analyses these two terms, their usage and implied meanings, and compares them with other alternative concepts employed elsewhere in legal pluralism and cognate literature. With reference to empirical evidence on plural work regulation in Indonesia, I argue that the terms have some descriptive benefits for understanding the realities of plural legal orders, but still …

Slo Children’S Museum Music Education Exhibit, Charles Coffen, Madeline Carleton-Sniff, Yael Castillo, Anthony Ramos

Mechanical Engineering

The Children’s Museum in San Luis Obispo is a non-profit facility providing education to young children through interactive exhibits. The proposed project would address a basic introduction to musical theory through mechanical engineering principles. The target audience for this musical art installation would be young children, aged 5-10, who would be regularly interacting with this exhibit, as well as their parents, and the employees of the museum. The installation will educate children in basic musical understanding through interaction while still being engaging enough to hold their attention. This document describes the final concept design and various methods of verification in …

Leptomeningeal Carcinomatosis In A Young Patient With Colorectal Cancer: A Case Report, Zamanali Khakhar, Soraiya Manji, Rajiv Patel, Karishma Sharma, Sheila Waa, Sayed Karar Sep 2024

Leptomeningeal Carcinomatosis In A Young Patient With Colorectal Cancer: A Case Report, Zamanali Khakhar, Soraiya Manji, Rajiv Patel, Karishma Sharma, Sheila Waa, Sayed Karar

Internal Medicine, East Africa

Leptomeningeal carcinomatosis (LMC) is a rare and fatal complication associated with various solid tumors and hematological malignancies. It presents significant diagnostic challenges due to its nonspecific symptoms and complex clinical course. This case report details the presentation, diagnosis, and implications of LMC in a 33-year-old male with a history of colorectal cancer (CRC) and hemicolectomy. The patient presented with nonspecific symptoms of headache and dizziness. Cerebrospinal fluid cytology revealed the presence of malignant cells, leading to the diagnosis of LMC secondary to CRC. The elusive and multifaceted nature of this condition highlights the necessity for increased clinical awareness and extensive …

Two-Dimensional Quantum Material Identification Via Self-Attention And Soft-Labeling In Deep Learning, Xuan Bac Nguyen, Apoorva Bisht, Benjamin Thompson, Hugh O.H. Churchill, Khoa Luu, Samee U. Khan Sep 2024

Two-Dimensional Quantum Material Identification Via Self-Attention And Soft-Labeling In Deep Learning, Xuan Bac Nguyen, Apoorva Bisht, Benjamin Thompson, Hugh O.H. Churchill, Khoa Luu, Samee U. Khan

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Detecting two-dimensional (2D) materials in silicon chips presents a significant challenge in the field of quantum machines due to the difficulty of data collection. Specifically, among thousands of flakes, not all flakes are useful or well-annotated, resulting in noisy and hard samples within the dataset, which challenges the deep neural network (DNN) to learn. To address this problem, we propose a novel method for identifying quantum 2D flakes even when there is a high rate of missing annotations in the input images. In particular, we first propose a new mechanism for automatically detecting false negative flakes that are missing annotations. …

Quantifying Temperature Effects On Plant Development Rates And Quality Of Compact Container-Grown Pepper, Ryan W. Dickson, Sonali Padhye, Leala M. Machesney, Josh Tebow

Horticulture Faculty Publications and Presentations

The mean daily temperature effects on plant development rates and quality of compact container-grown pepper were evaluated. Compact pepper cultivars Fresh Bites Yellow and Hot Burrito were grown in greenhouses at 18 to 26 °C (Expt. 1) and 20 to 30 °C (Expt. 2) under supplemental high-pressure sodium lighting and a 16-hour photoperiod. The number of days to first open flower, to first ripe fruit, and from flower to ripe fruit were measured and the development rates calculated by taking the reciprocal (e.g., 1/day). Temperature effects were predicted by fitting a nonlinear exponential function that included the base temperature ( …

Integrating Blockchain Technology Into The Software Development Life Cycle To Satisfy The Software Bill Of Materials Requirement For Government Software Systems, Walter T. Scott Ii

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the integration of Blockchain Technology (BT) into the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) to satisfy the Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) requirement for government software systems. This study begins by synthesizing a standard SDLC definition from various government and industry references, which may provide the foundation for future efforts to standardize software development practices across the government software development community. This study proceeds to define working definitions for the software supply chain (SSC) and software supply chain management (SCM) before introducing and detailing the SBOM requirement as well as providing an overview of prior research regarding SBOMs …
