Evaluation Of Transplant Benefits With The Us Scientific Registry Of Transplant Recipients By Semiparametric Regression Of Mean Residual Life, Ge Zhao, Yanyuan Ma, Huazhen Lin, Yi Li

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Kidney transplantation is the most effective renal replacement therapy for end stage renal disease patients. With the severe shortage of kidney supplies and for the clinical effectiveness of transplantation, patient’s life expectancy posttransplantation is used to prioritize patients for transplantation; however, severe comorbidity conditions and old age are the most dominant factors that negatively impact posttransplantation life expectancy, effectively precluding sick or old patients from receiving transplants. It would be crucial to design objective measures to quantify the transplantation benefit by comparing the mean residual life with and without a transplant, after adjusting for comorbidity and demographic conditions. To address …

Realist Or Utopian Pacifist? Jean-Jacques Rousseau And The Question Of War, Nikolaos Nikolakakis Sep 2024

Realist Or Utopian Pacifist? Jean-Jacques Rousseau And The Question Of War, Nikolaos Nikolakakis

All Works

This study offers an in-depth exploration of Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s philosophy of international relations, an under-researched but crucial aspect of his political thought. We strongly argue that Rousseau understood the transformation of individuals into morally mature subjects as a process intimately intertwined with the development of a political community. According to Rousseau, this intricate connection cannot be fully grasped without considering the international society of states. The paper unpacks Rousseau’s contemplations on the dynamics of war, the mechanisms of peace, and the unique attributes of states. It provides an articulate argument that Rousseau does not adhere strictly to the doctrines of …

A New Fractional Derivative Extending Classical Concepts: Theory And Applications, Mutaz Mohammad, Mohamed Saadaoui Sep 2024

A New Fractional Derivative Extending Classical Concepts: Theory And Applications, Mutaz Mohammad, Mohamed Saadaoui

All Works

In this paper, a novel general definition for the fractional derivative and fractional integral based on an undefined kernel function is introduced. For 0<α≤1, this definition aligns with classical interpretations and is applicable for calculating the derivative in an open negative interval I⊆[a,+∞),a∈R. Additionally, when α=1, the definition coincides with the classical derivative. Fundamental properties of the fractional integral and derivative, including the product rule, quotient rule, chain rule, Rolle's theorem, and the mean value theorem, are derived. These properties are illustrated through various applications to demonstrate their applicability. Furthermore, some applications of solving fractional nonlinear systems of integro-differential equations using framelets are presented.

Inmate Assistance Programs, Tim Friehe, Murat C. Mungan

Faculty Scholarship

This paper analyzes the deterrence implications of different inmate assistance programs (IAPs), carefully distinguishing between deterrence of first offenses and recidivism. All IAPs considered in our model reduce recidivism, and we identify IAPs that also reduce the first offense rate. However, IAPs which increase work opportunities, improve the reintegration of exiting inmates, and moderate individual’s self-control issues may lower the deterrence of first offenses, if this possibility is not adequately anticipated when designing these IAPs.

Shrinking saline lakes provide irreplaceable habitat for waterbird species globally. Disentangling the effects of wetland habitat loss from other drivers of waterbird population dynamics is critical for protecting these species in the face of unprecedented changes to saline lake ecosystems, ideally through decision-making frameworks that identify effective management options and their potential outcomes. Here, we develop a framework to assess the effects of hypothesized population drivers and identify potential future outcomes of plausible management scenarios on a saline lake-reliant waterbird species. We use 36 years of monitoring data to quantify the effects of environmental conditions on the population size of …

Fisheries Research Articles

The reliable quantification of microplastic contamination in chitinous organisms requires validated methods to remove interfering complex organic and inorganic material. This study trialled KOH, H2O2 and HNO3 digestion methods on the digestive tracts of two large decapods (Panulirus cygnus and Portunus armatus) to validate a protocol that facilitates reliable microplastic extraction. KOH digestion provided the best recovery (>95 %) of all polymers (e.g. polyamide, polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene, polystyrene and polyvinyl chloride), with the lowest impact to their physical morphology and chemical spectra. While HNO3, and HNO3 + H2O2 treatments were more effective at digesting chitin, they …

Soil Biogeochemical Properties Remain Altered Following Cessation Of Long-Term Simulated Nitrogen Deposition In A Temperate Forest, Jennie Ellen Wuest

Master's Theses and Capstones

Nitrogen (N) is an essential nutrient in terrestrial ecosystems and the transformations it undergoes mediated by microbes in soil are central to N cycling. While rates of atmospheric N deposition due to anthropogenic activity increased dramatically with the industrial revolution, government regulations in the late 20th century resulted in a reversal. Rates of atmospheric N deposition remain well above pre-industrial levels, but the last two decades have seen a steady decrease in areas such as the Northeastern United States. To investigate the potential for soil recovery from long-term N addition, we measured a suite of soil biogeochemical properties in a …

Health and Human Sciences Faculty Works

Mitochondrial genomic integrity is a key element of physiological processes and health. Changes in the half-life of the mitochondrial genome are implicated in the generation and accumulation of age-induced mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations, which are implicated in skeletal muscle aging and sarcopenia. There are conflicting data on the half-life of mtDNA, and there is limited information on how aging affects half-life in skeletal muscle. We hypothesized that skeletal muscle mtDNA synthesis rates would decrease with age in both female and male rats concomitant with changes in mtDNA integrity reflected in mtDNA copy number and mutation frequency. We measured mitochondrial genome …
