Singing Petrarch In The Cinquecento: Embodied Reading And The Italian Madrigal, Thomas A. Hedrick Iii
Singing Petrarch In The Cinquecento: Embodied Reading And The Italian Madrigal, Thomas A. Hedrick Iii
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation examines how composers of sixteenth-century Italian madrigals highlighted poetic line rhythm, repeated vowel sounds (or assonance), and word repetition in figures of speech—all elements of the verse that have been previously overlooked by scholars, who have traditionally focused on musical depictions of the text’s semantics. The analysis in chapters 2, 3, and 4 shows that composers used a consistent set of techniques from the madrigals of Arcadelt to those of Monteverdi, and musical examples draw from large collection of madrigals on Petrarch sonnets. The analytical methodology is built on the premise that Cinquecento encounters with poetry can be …
String Quartet, Scott A. Miller
String Quartet, Scott A. Miller
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This quartet begins by providing glimpses of three distinct musical ideas. Although they seem totally unrelated, the music seeks to confound this initial expectation. Related textural contrasts are developed between dialogical textures and the quartet speaking as one voice. The pitch material combines just intonation with twelve tone equal temperament.

Newly Synthesized Pyroglutamate Amide And Its Neuroprotective Effect Against Neurotoxicity Induced Cell Death In Alzheimer's Disease, Nourelhouda Joutey Elamrani
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The neurodegenerative disorder is an umbrella term for a range of conditions that affects the neurons in the human brain causing neuronal cell death. The common pathway is the excitotoxicity, a phenomenon that describes the toxic actions of excitatory neurotransmitters, primarily glutamate, where the exacerbated or prolonged activation of glutamate receptors starts a cascade of neurotoxicity leading to the cell death. One of the most common neurodegenerative disorders is Alzheimer’s disease (AD), which represents 60 – 70% of cases and it ranked fourth cause of mortality in the USA. In Alzheimer’s disease, glutamate released from astrocytes and activates extrasynaptic N-methyl-D-aspartate …

Self-Perceived Cognitive Functioning In Motoric Cognitive Risk Syndrome: Enhancing Risk Detection In Health Disparity Older Adults, Caroline O. Nester
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Motoric Cognitive Risk Syndrome (MCR) is a predementia condition that combines two clinical presentations associated with dementia: slow gait speed and subjective cognitive concerns (SCC). MCR diagnosis is associated with increased risk for dementia over its individual components of SCC or slow gait alone, making it a valuable marker of early neurodegenerative changes. MCR does not require expensive, time-consuming assessments to be diagnosed, broadening accessibility in remote or under-resourced settings. At present, there is no consistent method to assess SCC in MCR – a key diagnostic feature of the syndrome. The lack of understanding about SCC in MCR may limit …
A Praxis Of Radical Collectivity: Centering Justice And The Poetics Of Racialized Progressive Leadership, Alisa Algava
A Praxis Of Radical Collectivity: Centering Justice And The Poetics Of Racialized Progressive Leadership, Alisa Algava
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Educational research that effectively addresses larger sociopolitical and sociohistorical contexts must interrogate macro-level decision-making and policies and prioritize the lived experiences of those who directly affect and are affected by social structures. This project explores racial and economic justice work in schools by centering the perspectives of those progressive educational leaders who strive, work and grapple to center all adults and children within our larger unjust education systems. As individual leaders share their stories through one-on-one recollections and in critical collaborative inquiry groups, they illuminate spaces of contestation, continuity and liberation. The context of both continuous and unfolding pandemics along …
Assessing The Influence Of Llms On Online Review: Identifying And Addressing The Rise Of Convincing Fake Reviews, Zico Abhi Dey
Assessing The Influence Of Llms On Online Review: Identifying And Addressing The Rise Of Convincing Fake Reviews, Zico Abhi Dey
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Large Language Models (LLMs) have made remarkable advancements, reaching a level where they can generate outputs that compete with human writing. LLM's sophisticated features, however, make it hard for us to spot the difference between human-written and AI-generated text. LLMs have several weaknesses since they are susceptible to hallucinations and outputting factually incorrect information. Additionally, they may be used maliciously to promote deception and instigate fraud, such as fake reviews generation, which rapidly appear on the internet while posing a challenge for consumers who want to place their faith in online reviews. To maintain trust in the online information system, …

Precision Measurement Of The Absolute Energy Of The 2s3s 1S0 State In Neutral 9Be, K. J. Ahrendsen, T. Karani, W. D. Williams
Physics: Faculty Publications
We report on the absolute energy of the 2310 state in neutral 9Be. In doing so, we measure the transition frequencies of the 2210→ 221∘1 and 221∘1→ 2310 transitions, also determining the absolute energy of the 221∘1 state. The results are obtained from a home-built hollow cathode discharge lamp using saturated absorption spectroscopy with laser frequencies referenced to a frequency comb. The transition frequencies are determined to be 1276080080(50) and 363105650(130) MHz for the 2210→ 221∘1 and 221∘1→ 2310 transitions, respectively. The absolute energies are determined to be 42565.4498(17) and 54677.350(5) cm−1 for the 221∘1 and 2310 states, respectively. The …

Legal Hurdles And Pathways: The Evolution (Progress?) Of Climate Change Adjudication In Canada, Camille Cameron, Riley Weyman, Claire Nicholson
Dalhousie Law Journal
Citizens, civil society, and environmental justice organizations are increasingly turning to courts to find solutions to climate change challenges. As of November 2022, the number of climate change litigation cases throughout the world was at least 2.5 times higher than in 2017. A dominant wave of this litigation is one in which claimants assert that governments’ failures to take appropriate mitigation and adaptation measures violate claimants’ rights. We analyze this jurisprudence in this article, with a focus on the recent Ontario Superior Court of Justice decision in Mathur v Ontario. While the claims in this case were dismissed, it is …

Background & aims: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading cause of cancer death. HCC is preventable with about 70% of HCC attributable to modifiable risk factors. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs), Food and Drug Administration–approved medications for treating type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), have pleiotropic effects on counteracting risk factors for HCC. Here we evaluate the association of GLP-1RAs with incident HCC risk in a real-world population. Methods: This retrospective cohort included 1,890,020 patients with a diagnosis of T2DM who were prescribed GLP-1RAs or other non-GLP-1RA anti-diabetes medications and had no prior diagnosis of HCC. Incident (first-time) diagnosis of HCC …

On Extension Of Metricspace To Neutro Hypermetricspace, Kianoosh Polvan
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
Polvan introduced the impression of strong neutro metricspaces. He demonstrtated this impression depending on the neutro precepts from the neutro function one of the impressions of Smarandache. In this study, we introduce an extension of neutro metricspaces as neutro hypermetricspaces and investigated their qualities. We show that neutro hypermetricspaces are an extension of metricspaces and analyzed the relations between metricspaces and neutro hypermetricspaces. The basic impressions such as open positive-ball subsets and open negative-ball subsets are defined and are presented by some finite and finite neutro hypermetricspaces. Based on the open positive-ball subsets and open negative-ball subsets, we demonstrate the …

Willingness To Pay And Market Potential For Biowrap: An Economic Study Of A New Biodegradable Mulch Product In Home Gardening, Gengchen Cai
Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This study explores the market potential of BioWRAP, a biodegradable sprayable weed suppression product, by assessing the willingness to pay (WTP) among American home gardeners. Traditional plastic mulch offers significant agronomic benefits but poses considerable environmental challenges, making BioWRAP a promising alternative due to its similar benefits and reduced environmental impact. Using a double-bounded contingent valuation method, we analyze the WTP for BioWRAP among different demographic groups and gardening practices. Our findings indicate that the highest WTP for BioWRAP is among home gardeners who currently use chemical sprays for weed suppression, followed by those using physical barriers, with the lowest …
Settlement As Construct: Defining And Counting Party Resolution In Federal District Court, Charlotte S. Alexander, Nathan Dahlberg, Anne M. Tucker
Settlement As Construct: Defining And Counting Party Resolution In Federal District Court, Charlotte S. Alexander, Nathan Dahlberg, Anne M. Tucker
Northwestern University Law Review
Most civil cases settle. Yet generating a definitive settlement rate presents complex definitional and empirical problems, both in what should count as a settlement and how to count it. This Essay makes three contributions to better understanding and defining settlement. First, we propose a flexible, empirically informed, operationalizable definition of settlement as party resolution. Second, we exploit a new federal litigation data source to count party resolutions using machine learning models trained on 11 million docket sheet entries. Third, we offer new findings on party resolution frequency and distribution in the federal courts. Settlement is more widely and differently deployed …
Prosecutorial Data Transparency And Data Justice, Caitlin Glass, Kat M. Albrecht, Perry Moriearty
Prosecutorial Data Transparency And Data Justice, Caitlin Glass, Kat M. Albrecht, Perry Moriearty
Northwestern University Law Review
The U.S. criminal legal system is notoriously racialized. Though Black and Latinx people make up less than 30% of U.S. residents, they constitute more than 50% of the nearly two million people currently in U.S. prisons and jails. For decades, research has indicated that one group of decision-makers has had an outsized influence on these numbers: prosecutors. From whom to charge to what sentences to recommend, no actor plays a greater role in determining who goes to prison in this country. Highly subjective and lacking in formal guidance and accountability, prosecutorial decisions are especially vulnerable to racial bias. They are …
Neuronal Control Of Posture In Blind Individuals, I. Helmich, R. Gemmerich
Neuronal Control Of Posture In Blind Individuals, I. Helmich, R. Gemmerich
Exercise and Sport Studies: Faculty Publications
The control of posture is guided by the integration of sensory information. Because blind individuals cannot apply visual information to control posture as sighted individuals do they must compensate by the remaining senses. We therefore hypothesize that blind individuals alter their brain activation in the sensorimotor cortex during postural control to compensate for balance control without vision by the increased integration of somatosensory information. Ten blind and ten sighted (matched) individuals controlled posture during conditions with (I) eyes closed / open, and (II) stable / unstable surface conditions. Postural sway was recorded by applying a pressure distribution measuring plate. Brain …

When E And G Disagree: Esg Scores Between Hedonic And Utilitarian Firms, Timothy Loomas
When E And G Disagree: Esg Scores Between Hedonic And Utilitarian Firms, Timothy Loomas
Executive DBA Dissertations
How do Environmental (E), Social (S), and Governance (G) scores vary when examined under a hedonic-utilitarian lens? The happiness and guilt associated with hedonic (pleasure oriented) products have been shown to increase altruism and prosocial behavior as compared to utilitarian (need oriented) products. Based on this we examine whether Social- and Environmental-pillar scores for firms associated with hedonic products and/or services will be greater than for firms associated with utilitarian products and/or services. To test these hypotheses, data from the Thompson-Refinitiv ESG database were used to compare the ESG pillar scores between hedonic and utilitarian firms. The research finds higher …

This dissertation examines how macro-level actors in the sterile processing industry utilize social connectedness and experiential surfacing to facilitate the sensegiving process in the adoption of disruptive technologies. Drawing on the institutional work theory, this study focuses on the actions of individual actors aimed at creating, maintaining, and disrupting institutions in the context of sterile processing—a critical yet often overlooked sector of healthcare.
This research specifically explores how the sterile processing industry responded to the adoption of disruptive technologies during the COVID-19 pandemic. By analyzing over 1,100 podcast episodes, the study examines the rhetorical strategies used by industry leaders and …
There Is Such A Thing As A Free Lunch, But That Isn't Enough: Incentivizing Elementary School-Age Children To Participate In The Healthy Free Meals Program, Angelia Nava
Executive DBA Dissertations
This dissertation investigates the influence of incentives on school-age children's participation in school meal programs, aiming to understand the impact of different incentive strategies on student behavior. This research delves into the dynamics of reward structures (team versus individual) and their implications on school-age children's short- and long-term participation in school meal programs. We find that both incentives increase meal participation and that the team incentive is more effective than the individual incentive, especially in the short run. We also find that once the incentive is removed that motivation to do the activity also returns to pre- incentive levels.

As with phenotyping of any microscopic appendages, such as cilia or antennae, phenotyping of root hairs has been a challenge due to their complex intersecting arrangements in two-dimensional images and the technical limitations of automated measurements. Digital Imaging of Root Traits at Microscale (DIRT/μ) is a newly developed algorithm that addresses this issue by computationally resolving intersections and extracting individual root hairs from two-dimensional microscopy images. This solution enables automatic and precise trait measurements of individual root hairs. DIRT/μ rigorously defines a set of rules to resolve intersecting root hairs and minimizes a newly designed cost function to combinatorically identify …

Growth And Faceting Of Tungsten And Oxides In Scandate Cathode Particles During In Situ Heating In The Scanning Electron Microscope, Huanhuan Bai, Thomas John Balk
Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
Tungsten-based scandate dispenser cathodes are promising next-generation thermionic electron sources for vacuum electron devices, due to their excellent emission performance at tempera- tures lower than those required for conventional cathodes. There has been a significant recent effort to understand scandate cathode performance and to characterize the tungsten and other materials on the emitting surface, primarily via the study of cathodes before and after emission testing. Moreover, these scandate cathodes have typically been characterized at room temperature only. In situ obser- vations of scandate cathodes is challenging, as these devices are thermionic emitters that operate in a high-vacuum environment, and because …

Controlling the stress state of electrodes during electrochemical cycling can have a positive effect on the cycling performance of lithium-ion battery. In this work, we study the cycling performance of silicon-based lithium-ion half cells under the action of pressure in a range of 0.1 to 0.4 MPa. The cycling performance of the silicon-based lithium-ion half cells increases first with increasing the pressure to 0.2 MPa and then decreases with further increasing the pressure. The analysis of the surface morphologies of cycled electrodes reveals that applying a pressure of 0.2 MPa leads to the formation of fine electrode surface with the …
