Beyond Medicaid Expansion: Addressing The Sexual And Reproductive Health Crisis In Rural Appalachia, Cheyenne Peters

Marquette Benefits and Social Welfare Law Review

In addition to negatively impacting abortion access, the decision

in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization has forced many

clinics in rural Appalachia that previously provided access to holistic

sexual and reproductive health services, such as contraception

management, sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing, and preventative

cancer screening, to close their doors entirely. This has left

many Appalachians living in rural communities with no option for

accessing sexual and reproductive healthcare. However, many people

were never able to access the care even before the recent provider

shortage due to a lack of adequate insurance coverage. This

article explores how Medicaid expansion …

From Margins To Center: Elevating The Voices Of Disadvantaged Families In Child Welfare, Jerron R. Wheeler

Marquette Benefits and Social Welfare Law Review

This essay sheds light on the systemic challenges faced by indigent,

minority families within the child welfare system, using personal experiences

from my time as a student at the University of Florida

Levin College of Law as a lens. This essay aims to highlight the intersection

of poverty, race, and the child welfare system, showing

how these factors can hinder parents' ability to reunite with their

children despite their best efforts. The essay seeks to underscore the

urgent need for a more nuanced, multidisciplinary approach to child

welfare advocacy that includes legal professionals, social workers,

and health professionals working collaboratively …

The Border Crisis And The Right To Seek Asylum, Philip G. Schrag Sep 2024

The Border Crisis And The Right To Seek Asylum, Philip G. Schrag

Hofstra Law Review

Control over the U.S. southern border has become one of the most contentious issues in American politics. Any migrant who crosses that border into the United States has a statutory right to seek asylum. Butthe process for adjudicating asylum claims in the nation’s immigration courts has essentially collapsed, with waiting times for hearings averaging about four years. During those years, an asylum applicant can remain in the United States with a right to work, and many politicians and commentators believe that migrants have therefore been incentivized to cross the border either by rafting across the Rio Grande or hiking through …

The Law Is Weirder Than Ai, Sam Williams Sep 2024

The Law Is Weirder Than Ai, Sam Williams

Hofstra Law Review

Between artificial intelligence threatening to take our jobs and destroy the world while adopting the aesthetic of the weird and a presidential election that could have been partially determined by how people feel about being weird, it seems like the weird is taking over. In this Article, I make the case for embracing the weird. Only by embracing our own weirdness can we make sense of the weirdness (or lack thereof) of those that we do not understand. Primarily through the lens of author H.P. Lovecraft’s weird tales, I argue that the law is very weird. This weirdness is mostly …

Disorientations: The Political Ecology Of “Displacing” Floating Communities From Cambodia's Tonle Sap Lake, Sopheak Chann, Alice Beban, Amanda Flaim, Timothy Gorman, Long Ly Vouch Sep 2024

Disorientations: The Political Ecology Of “Displacing” Floating Communities From Cambodia's Tonle Sap Lake, Sopheak Chann, Alice Beban, Amanda Flaim, Timothy Gorman, Long Ly Vouch

Department of Sociology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In this article, we extend a theory of disorientations to reveal how attempts to fix and control both water and people are disrupting once-fluid relationships between the Tonle Sap Lake and communities who have lived with-on the lake for generations. Using ethnographic and participatory mapping methods, we examine the socio-ecological dynamics that preceded and succeeded in the forced relocation of three floating communities in 2018. We argue that communities’ experiences challenge land-centric and event-centric understandings of displacement that pathologise fluid lifeways and fail to account for the materiality of water that has shaped floating villages’ multi-generational relationships with their wetland …

Young Children’S Directed Question Asking In Preschool Classrooms, Michelle Wong, Koeun Choi, Libby Barak, Elizabeth Lapidow, Jennifer Austin, Patrick Shafto, Elizabeth Bonawitz Sep 2024

Young Children’S Directed Question Asking In Preschool Classrooms, Michelle Wong, Koeun Choi, Libby Barak, Elizabeth Lapidow, Jennifer Austin, Patrick Shafto, Elizabeth Bonawitz

Department of Linguistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Question asking is a prevalent aspect of children’s speech, providing a means by which young learners can rapidly gain information about the world. Previous research has demonstrated that children exhibit sensitivity to the knowledge state of potential informants in laboratory settings. However, it remains unclear whether and how young children are inclined to direct questions that support learning deeper content to more knowledgeable informants in naturalistic classroom contexts. In this study, we examined children’s question-asking targets (adults, other preschoolers, self-talk) during an open-play period in a US preschool classroom and assessed how the cognitive and linguistic characteristics of questions varied …

Numerical Analysis Of The Mechanics Of Foreign Particle Entry On Automotive Turbocharger Compressor Blades, Anand Pai, Anshul Singh, Marcos Rodriguez-Millan, Adwait Mangrule

Open Access archive

Automotive turbochargers, essential for enhancing intake air pressure and boosting torque in internal combustion engines, operate at exceptionally high rotational speeds of approximately 100,000 to 300,000 rpm. Despite the implementation of dual or triple air filtration systems to filter contaminants, neglected maintenance can lead to clogged filters, resulting in the ingestion of metallic filter mesh, and other small-sized objects from filter indicators, washers, and plastic components into the turbocharger assembly. The current study explores the impact of foreign particles on the mechanics of turbocompressor impeller blades in automotive turbochargers through a computational approach. A finite element model of the turbocompressor …

Ketogenic Diets Hold Therapeutic Potential Against Periodontal Inflammation, Shaswata Karmakar, Shivaprasad, Ramya Arangaraju, Baishakhi Modak

Open Access archive

Purpose of Review: Periodontitis, one of the most prevalent diseases in the world, is caused by the accumulation of dysbiotic microbial biofilm on the teeth leading to chronic inflammation of the tissues surrounding the teeth. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), obesity, chronic stress, and smoking are some of the risk factors for the disease. A high-carbohydrate diet also increases the risk of periodontal inflammation. Modifying diet and nutrition could serve as a preventive and therapeutic tool to target multiple risk factors simultaneously. Recent Findings: Emerging evidence shows that the ketogenic diet induces hormetic stress and switches on various cell-protective anti-inflammatory …

Impact Of Sleep Quality On Hemogram-Derived Inflammatory Indices In Medical Undergraduates: A Cross-Sectional Study, Yash Garg, T. Jaseem, Kavita Rasalkar

Open Access archive

The link between sleep-related disorders and inflammation is well-known, but the association between inflammatory indices and sleep deprivation is still unclear. In our study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between irregular sleep patterns and systemic inflammation using Hemogram-Based Inflammatory Indices. We collected demographic information from 90 undergraduate medical students through a confidential questionnaire. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Blood samples were obtained for complete blood count analysis, with platelet (P), lymphocyte (L), and neutrophil (N) counts measured. These values were then used to calculate hemogram-based inflammatory indices, including the Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index (SII), …

Surveillance Of Ventilator Associated Pneumonia In A Network Of Indian Hospitals Using Modified Definitions: A Pilot Study, Purva Mathur, Aparna Ningombam, Kapil Dev Soni, Richa Aggrawal

Open Access archive

Background: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients receiving mechanical ventilation in India. Surveillance of VAP is essential to implement data-based preventive measures. Implementation of ventilator-associated events (VAE) criteria for surveillance has major constraints for low resource settings, which can lead to significant underreporting. Surveillance of VAP using common protocols in a large network of hospitals would give meaningful estimates of the burden of VAP in low resource settings. This study leverages a previously established healthcare-associated infections (HAI) surveillance network to develop and test a modified VAP definition adjusted for Indian settings. Methods: In …

Measures Of Justice: Researching And Evaluating Lay Legal Assistance Programs, Tanina Rostain, James Teufel Sep 2024

Measures Of Justice: Researching And Evaluating Lay Legal Assistance Programs, Tanina Rostain, James Teufel

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In recent years a national movement to train lay advocates and advisors to assist people with their common justice problems has emerged in the United States. A host of new programs have launched that allow trained navigators and justice workers to provide legal assistance. These programs – developed in Alaska, Delaware, South Carolina, Arizona, and Utah, among other places – vary in their substantive focus, the skills they impart, and their approaches to reaching the people and communities they seek to help. The proliferation of lay legal assistance programs creates research imperatives and opportunities. These programs need to be assessed …

Engineering-Enhanced Theatre: How Engineering Involvement Can Aid Regional Theatres, Albert M. Le Sep 2024

Engineering-Enhanced Theatre: How Engineering Involvement Can Aid Regional Theatres, Albert M. Le

Architectural Engineering

Engineering and theatre are disciplines not often associated with each other within regional and small theatre companies in the United States. The distinction between the two fields of study is not simply from the fundamental differences between how each field is taught and practiced, but also the difficulties encountered within a scope of theatre often constrained with limited budget and time for each production. However, when beginning to explore the intersection between engineering and theatre, it is found that the empirical nature of current theatrical practices can be countered, and scenic design and construction can be re-envisioned with engineering involvement …

Innovations To Increase Plywood Shear Wall Design Capacity And Resiliency, "Mega Walls", Through Ductile Metal Strapping, Trevor Douglas Reichenberg, Tara Suzanne Reich, Katelyn Marie Lowry

Architectural Engineering

The researchers of this project are three undergraduate Architectural Engineering students at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Plywood shear walls are common structural elements in timber structures that resist lateral forces. Since their introduction to the industry in the 1950s, their shear capacities have remained essentially unchanged amongst the innovations of other wooden lateral systems. Prior to this project, Cal Poly undergraduate researchers have taken on the challenge of modernizing the shear wall. The “MeGa Wall” project was born: a system that implements metal gauge strapping which enhances a conventional wall by reducing nail connection failures. Full-scale experimental …

A New Strategy To Modify Hopfield By Using Xor Operation, Rusul Hussein Hasan Sep 2024

A New Strategy To Modify Hopfield By Using Xor Operation, Rusul Hussein Hasan

Baghdad Science Journal

The Hopfield network is one of the easiest types, and its architecture is such that each neuron in the network connects to the other, thus called a fully connected neural network. In addition, this type is considered auto-associative memory, because the network returns the pattern immediately upon recognition, this network has many limitations, including memory capacity, discrepancy, orthogonally between patterns, weight symmetry, and local minimum. This paper proposes a new strategy for designing Hopfield based on XOR operation; A new strategy is proposed to solve these limitations by suggesting a new algorithm in the Hopfield network design, this strategy will …

Infertility’S Impact On Couples’ Functioning, Elizabeth Sanders Sep 2024

Infertility’S Impact On Couples’ Functioning, Elizabeth Sanders

Dissertations

Historically, infertility has been a taboo topic of discussion and is often avoided in conversation because of the stigmatization of the diagnosis. According to the World Health Organization (2022), infertility affects 186 million individuals globally. However, there seems to be a gap in the research as it pertains to the psychological well-being and treatment of men and women diagnosed with this condition. While it has become less of a feared topic, it still is not discussed or researched enough, thus further exacerbating the gap in research on mental health and treatment options. The following dissertation completed a critical review of …

There have been many studies documenting the benefits of social – emotional (SEL) instruction for students, but fewer on how teaching SEL curriculums may alleviate teacher burnout. I used a mixed methods research design to investigate the impact of teaching social-emotional learning, mindfulness, and life skills through The Leader in Me (LiM), a K-12 whole-school improvement model based on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People on educators. The outcomes of surveys and interviews indicated that most educators in my study reported personal and professional benefits from teaching and modeling the program. My recommendations include further implementation of SEL, Mindfulness, …

Skin Necrosis Following Digital Wart Intralesional Injection Of Cantharidin, Sebastian Arango, Tristan Weir, Andrew Miller, Meredith Osterman Sep 2024

Skin Necrosis Following Digital Wart Intralesional Injection Of Cantharidin, Sebastian Arango, Tristan Weir, Andrew Miller, Meredith Osterman

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

A right-hand-dominant female presented 5 weeks following a right middle finger intralesional cantharidin injection for a common wart by a dermatologist. The patient experienced progressive stiffness, blistering, swelling, pain, and ultimately, full-thickness skin necrosis surrounding the injection site. Careful debridement followed by a full-thickness skin graft was performed with no evidence of involvement of the germinal matrix or terminal extensor tendon. At the 7-month postoperative mark, the patient’s graft exhibited favorable healing and improved functionality that did not require further follow-up. Intralesional injection of cantharidin solutions for digital warts leads to progressive skin necrosis. Our case required prompt debridement and …
