Assessment Of Variants Of Organic-Based Rice Production Systems In Negros Occidental, Philippines, Cielo Luz C. Mondejar, Gerald E. Bello, Karla V. Canto, Chenille Kaye L. Galvan, June Nill F. Paclibar

The Philippine Agricultural Scientist

A survey was conducted to determine information needs and assess variants of organic rice-based production among rice farmers in Negros Occidental, Philippines. Survey data were gathered from 199 out of 400 identified organic rice practitioners in the province, which accounts for a > 95% confidence level and 5% of margin of error. Among the respondents, only 20.1% had organic certification from third-party representatives, and 42.2% can be classified under a low-input farming system. Some (21.1%) were in transition for certification or were farmers intending to go into organic certification with third-party representatives. The remaining (16.6%) used organic inputs but were not …

Boar Sperm Performance In Polystyrene Transport Cool Box Under Various Storage Conditions And Holding Times [Rsearch Note], Santiago T. Peña Jr., Bianca Therese P. Ymas, Mark Edd B. Janier, Heherson A. Luza

The Philippine Agricultural Scientist

When transporting highly valuable boar semen samples over long distances, it is crucial to ensure that boar semen is stored ideally at approximately 15 – 17°C to minimize the impact of cold shock and oxidative damage on sperm quality. This study evaluated the performance of a commercially available semen and embryo polystyrene transport cool box, BotuFLEX®, in preserving the quality of extended boar semen under different storage conditions and holding times. Boar ejaculates were extended at 1:1 or 1:3 using a commercial mid-term extender, stored in a BotuFLEX® semen cool box, and examined 24 vs. 48 h thereafter (Experiment 1; …

Carbon Cycling Driven By Disturbance In A Tropical Freshwater Ecosystem, Alicia Dixon Sep 2024

Carbon Cycling Driven By Disturbance In A Tropical Freshwater Ecosystem, Alicia Dixon

Master's Theses and Capstones

Streams are hotspots for biogeochemical cycling in freshwater ecosystems and act as transformers for elements moving throughout their watersheds. Small watersheds in particular are the ideal natural laboratory for exploring how freshwater systems react to inputs and outputs of carbon, nitrogen, and other trace elements. Carbon cycling occurs throughout watersheds at different scales and through different pathways. Organic matter enters a stream from surrounding terrestrial environments, and is subsequently consumed by microbes, macroinvertebrates, and other freshwater organisms. The fate of organic matter in a stream is diverse, but some common pathways include emission as carbon dioxide through metabolic processes, movement …

Spot, Zone And Overcoat Painting Of Steel Bridges, Christopher Goff, Sudhir Palle Sep 2024

Spot, Zone And Overcoat Painting Of Steel Bridges, Christopher Goff, Sudhir Palle

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Over the past 25 – 30 years, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has replaced lead-based coatings on many bridges, often with zinc-based systems. But many of these coating systems are now degrading and reaching the ends of their service lives. Historically, KYTC has relied entirely on remove-and-replace painting, however, given the programmatic costs associated with remove-and-replace painting and constraints imposed by limited funding, the agency needs to explore more economical options, such as spot, zone, and overcoat painting. This report discusses use cases for spot, zone, and overcoat painting and lays out guidelines staff can use to determine what method …

The Takings Blunderbuss: From Pennsylvania Coal To Dobbs, Michael Allan Wolf Sep 2024

The Takings Blunderbuss: From Pennsylvania Coal To Dobbs, Michael Allan Wolf

UF Law Faculty Publications

This Article explores three problems with the excess use of the Takings Clause (the "takings blunderbuss") that should cause concern not to left-wing judges and scholars who endorse seemingly unfettered activism from the bench and champion an organic view of the Constitution, but instead, and somewhat surprisingly, to conservatives who claim to eschew those practices. The first problem is that the text and original understanding, as far as we can discern, indicate that the Takings Clause was designed to ensure that owners receive payment when they are forced to sacrifice ownership of their tangible property for public use, most commonly …

First-Order Comprehensive Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology For Neural Ordinary Differential Equations: Mathematical Framework And Illustrative Application To The Nordheim–Fuchs Reactor Safety Model, Dan Gabriel Cacuci Sep 2024

First-Order Comprehensive Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology For Neural Ordinary Differential Equations: Mathematical Framework And Illustrative Application To The Nordheim–Fuchs Reactor Safety Model, Dan Gabriel Cacuci

Faculty Publications

This work introduces the mathematical framework of the novel “First-Order Comprehensive Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology for Neural Ordinary Differential Equations” (1st-CASAM-NODE) which yields exact expressions for the first-order sensitivities of NODE decoder responses to the NODE parameters, including encoder initial conditions, while enabling the most efficient computation of these sensitivities. The application of the 1st-CASAM-NODE is illustrated by using the Nordheim–Fuchs reactor dynamics/safety phenomenological model, which is representative of physical systems that would be modeled by NODE while admitting exact analytical solutions for all quantities of interest (hidden states, decoder outputs, sensitivities with respect to all parameters and initial conditions, …

The System Works As Intended: Alabama’S 1901 Constitution And Financing Public Education, Brucie Porter Sep 2024

The System Works As Intended: Alabama’S 1901 Constitution And Financing Public Education, Brucie Porter

Politics, Justice, Law, and Philosophy

From 1990-2014, Alabama fought against improving the property tax system for the benefit of public schools in Knight v. Alabama (2007) and Lynch v. Alabama (2014). Knight and Lynch charged the State with upholding a racially discriminatory property tax system that served to keep public school systems, particularly in rural, predominately Black counties, severely underfunded. Brown v. Board compelled Alabama to desegregate its school systems with “all deliberate speed,” but school systems remained unequal due to funding disparities from the state’s overly complicated tax system. Despite over 700 amendments by 2014, Alabama’s constitution left the property tax system created in …

Political Indifference And The Withering Of Democracy In Alabama, Noe Alexander Aguado Sep 2024

Political Indifference And The Withering Of Democracy In Alabama, Noe Alexander Aguado

Politics, Justice, Law, and Philosophy

Alabama’s 1901 Constitution was drafted to codify white supremacy by removing African Americans from the voter rolls. Alabama did not invent voter suppression, nor does it have a monopoly on policies that deny African Americans, minorities, and poor people the right to vote. This chapter provides examples of how and to what effect disenfranchisement has been used in Alabama and other communities throughout the United States. This chapter also chronicles Alabama’s unique constitutional feature that centralizes policymaking in the capitol – further suppressing democracy at the local level to the advantage of affluent interest groups entrenched in Montgomery. Consolidating policymaking …

A New Way Forward For Alabama Prisons, Brandon L. Blankenship

Politics, Justice, Law, and Philosophy

Blankenship delves into the harrowing realities and historical evolution of Alabama’s prison system, offering a critical lens on Alabama’s prisons from their inception to the present day. The narrative begins with a vivid description of the dire conditions within the prisons, where systemic violence, neglect, and deprivation prevail, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive reform. It traces the roots of the current crisis back to the state’s early reluctance to establish a penitentiary system, coupled with a persistent failure to address the underlying issues of overcrowding, inadequate healthcare, and violence. The chapter highlights the historical role of federal interventions in …

George Washington’S Teeth, Wittgenstein, And Two Gruesome Problems For Originalism, Scott Devito Sep 2024

George Washington’S Teeth, Wittgenstein, And Two Gruesome Problems For Originalism, Scott Devito

University of Arkansas at Little Rock Law Review

With the conservative turn of the U.S. Supreme Court, originalism has become ascendant. This rise to preeminence should trouble the legal community because originalism is grounded on a naive understanding of the interpretative process. Once we wash away this naivety and delve more deeply into legislative interpretation, we see that originalism fails in three ways. First, here is recent empirical evidence that general meaning is rare and, as such, the original meaning required by the theory is unlikely to have existed. Second, originalism fails to take into account the Problem of Induction—that making generalized inferences from a limited dataset is …

Russian Views Of The Unknown Coast: Shvetsov's Accounts Of The Oregon And Northern California Coastline During The Sea Otter Trade, 1808-09, Cameron La Follette, Douglas Deur, Andrei Grinev Sep 2024

Russian Views Of The Unknown Coast: Shvetsov's Accounts Of The Oregon And Northern California Coastline During The Sea Otter Trade, 1808-09, Cameron La Follette, Douglas Deur, Andrei Grinev

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Early-nineteenth century Russian accounts of the coastline between Alaska and Fort Ross are rare. This article helps fill this gap, providing diary accounts by Russian American Company employee, Afanasy Shvetsov, of two joint Russian-American sea otter hunting trips along the Oregon and northern California coasts in 1808-09. Recently recovered and translated, these accounts aptly describe landscapes and biota, as well as Russian, American, and conscripted Aleut and Kodiak Alutiiq hunters' interactions with Native American communities. Presented in their historical, geographical, and anthropological context, Shvetsov's accounts offer a rare, revealing glimpse of early European encounters with this contact-period coastline.

Autonomy And Form, Hanoch Dagan, Mark P. Gergen Sep 2024

Autonomy And Form, Hanoch Dagan, Mark P. Gergen

Hofstra Law Review

Contract formalities are often technical and may seem petty. But they can, and at their best they indeed do, play a key role in the liberal drama of modern contract law. Liberal contract is committed to proactively facilitate people’s cooperation in the service of their autonomy. This is an ambitious task, which requires contract law to discard the merely proceduralist posture of the classical model, and offer parties an inventory of robust contract types, each with a set of default rules, so that they can choose the type that generally fits their goals and then tinker with these defaults to …

Teachers Saving Students’ Lives One Dosage Of Narcan At A Time: A Teacher’S Heightened Duty Of Care Calls For Training And Immunity, Sammi Casamassino

Hofstra Law Review

The article discusses the growing expectation for public school teachers to administer Narcan to students experiencing opioid overdoses, emphasizing the need for proper training and legal protections. It addresses the disparities in training and immunity among schools and highlights the proposed "School Access to Naloxone Act of 2024," which aims to incentivize states to allow trained school personnel, including teachers, to administer Narcan. The Act requires states to provide training, maintain a supply of Narcan on school premises, and offer civil and criminal immunity to trained personnel acting in good faith. Its goal is to increase access to Narcan in …

Estate Planning Before 2026, Michelle S. Freeman, Shelby Follis

Faculty Open Access Works

Excerpt:

Estate planning can be a morbid matter that may only impact a small percentage of taxpayers. However, as CPAs, we are responsible for ensuring our impacted clients are prepared for the possible gift and estate tax changes on the horizon. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 (TCJA) introduced monumental tax reform affecting the gift and estate tax. The gift and estate tax lifetime exemption allows an individual to gift a certain amount tax-exempt during life or at death. Before the TCJA, the lifetime exemption began at a tax base of $5 million, adjusted for inflation ($5.6 million). …

Ectogenesis And The Value Of Gestational Ties, Susan Kennedy Sep 2024

Ectogenesis And The Value Of Gestational Ties, Susan Kennedy

Philosophy

Ectogenesis technology would make it possible to support the complete gestational development of a human being outside the female body. Proponents argue that this technology offers a welcome opportunity to expand reproductive options for those unable or unwilling to gestate. However, by completely bypassing pregnancy, the use of ectogenesis prevents the formation of gestational family ties. Consequently, it has faced criticism for perpetuating a patriarchal view of the family that undermines the moral significance of gestation. The concern is that the introduction of this technology might result in the loss of reproductive autonomy for those who desire to experience pregnancy, …

Fake Base Station Detection And Link Routing Defense, Sourav Purification, Jinoh Kim, Jonghyun Kim, Sang-Yoon Chang Sep 2024

Fake Base Station Detection And Link Routing Defense, Sourav Purification, Jinoh Kim, Jonghyun Kim, Sang-Yoon Chang

Faculty Publications

Fake base stations comprise a critical security issue in mobile networking. A fake base station exploits vulnerabilities in the broadcast message announcing a base station’s presence, which is called SIB1 in 4G LTE and 5G NR, to get user equipment to connect to the fake base station. Once connected, the fake base station can deprive the user of connectivity and access to the Internet/cloud. We discovered that a fake base station can disable the victim user equipment’s connectivity for an indefinite period of time, which we validated using our threat prototype against current 4G/5G practices. We designed and built a …
