Analysis And Conservation Of A 19th Century Automaton, Elisse D. Brautigam
Analysis And Conservation Of A 19th Century Automaton, Elisse D. Brautigam
Art Conservation Master's Projects
A late 19th century automaton, Madame La Doll, in the collections of the Buffalo History Museum ceased functioning recently, with the only recorded documentation of the object in motion stored on a DVD. Research was undertaken to provide provenance and authentication of museum records. Examination, digital photographic, and video documentation were done. Materials analysis using ultraviolet induced visible fluorescence, digital capture X-radiography, transmission Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), and FFMPEG were undertaken to characterize all object and video materials employed, identify alterations and repairs as well as provide information relevant to the study and display of …

The Conservation Treatment And Technical Study Of Two Marisol Sculptures, Ruthie Rolfsmeyer
Art Conservation Master's Projects
ABCDEFG & Hi (1961-62) and Father Damien (1966-67) are both painted wooden sculptures created by Marisol during the height of her fame. Although Marisol is a well-known artist, whose fame has been rekindling since her death in 2016, there have been few technical studies of her works. Multimodal imaging and scientific analysis of these two sculptures provide insight into their structure and materials. Techniques include x-ray radiography, reflectance transformation imaging, x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Key findings include the identification of toolmarks, nitrocellulose, alkyd, and acrylic paints, and a genuine diamond and pearl in …

Not So Cavalier: Technical Study And Conservation Treatment Of A Potential 17th Century Anglo-Dutch Military Portrait Painting, Josephine Ren
Art Conservation Master's Projects
A potential 17th century Anglo-Dutch military portrait painting from the Memorial Art Gallery at the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York arrived at the Garman Art Conservation Department at Buffalo State University for conservation research and treatment in 2022. The painting’s title, date, and artist were unknown and the subject was initially referred to as a “17th Century Dutch Cavalier.” Little information existed on the provenance and history of the artwork. The painting was in a state of structural instability and aesthetic disfigurement and showed evidence of a past restoration campaign. This master’s project attempted to broadly …

Liquefaction Mitigation Of Sands With Plastic Fines Via Microbial Induced Partial Saturation, Maya Norris
Liquefaction Mitigation Of Sands With Plastic Fines Via Microbial Induced Partial Saturation, Maya Norris
Master's Theses and Capstones
Microbial Induced Partial Saturation (MIPS) is a sustainable and cost-effective approach to mitigate liquefaction; however, more research needs to be done to apply MIPS to a variety of different soil types and conditions. The investigation consisted of running a series of undrained strain-controlled cyclic Direct Simple Shear (DSS) tests on fully saturated samples with varying non-plastic fine and plastic fine content. Some tests have been conducted on MIPS-treated samples; however, more tests are needed to verify the results. Previous investigations have been conducted to evaluate the pore water pressure response of sands with added non-plastic fines with and without MIPS …
Predicting The Association Of Metabolites With Both Pathway Categories And Individual Pathways, Erik D. Huckvale, Hunter Moseley
Predicting The Association Of Metabolites With Both Pathway Categories And Individual Pathways, Erik D. Huckvale, Hunter Moseley
Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications
Metabolism is a network of chemical reactions that sustain cellular life. Parts of this metabolic network are defined as metabolic pathways containing specific biochemical reactions. Products and reactants of these reactions are called metabolites, which are associated with certain human-defined metabolic pathways. Metabolic knowledgebases, such as the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Gene and Genomes (KEGG) contain metabolites, reactions, and pathway annotations; however, such resources are incomplete due to current limits of metabolic knowledge. To fill in missing metabolite pathway annotations, past machine learning models showed some success at predicting the KEGG Level 2 pathway category involvement of metabolites based on their …

The need for authentic work experience is a concern for most graduates entering the field of librarianship. For academic librarians, authentic teaching experience is particularly desired, and while some courses are offered in most library and information science graduate programs, few pair the coursework with opportunities for practical applications. At institutions with LIS programs, there can be partnerships with the university or college library. The Information Literacy Scholars Program at Syracuse University is one such program.
Balancing Interests In The Separation Of Powers, Shalev Gad Roisman
Balancing Interests In The Separation Of Powers, Shalev Gad Roisman
University of Chicago Law Review
There are two conventional methods for resolving separation of powers disputes: formalism and functionalism. Although both approaches have been around for decades, neither has proven capable of resolving the difficult separation of powers disputes that actually arise today. Such disputes—including over statutory removal restrictions, recognition, conduct of diplomacy, and executive privilege—do not involve instances where one branch is trying to exercise the other’s exclusive power, as formalism posits. Nor is it clear how one could measure, or evaluate the effect of any one dispute on, the general balance of powers between the branches that functionalism seeks to maintain. Instead, difficult …
Weak-Willed Legislatures And Statutory Interpretation, Helen Zhao
Weak-Willed Legislatures And Statutory Interpretation, Helen Zhao
University of Chicago Law Review
Not all statutes are created equal. Contributing to the literature on “super statutes,” I suggest that an analogy to the philosophical concept of weakness of will can illuminate circumstances under which some statutes ought to stand above others. Analogizing to philosopher Richard Holton’s account of weak will, I develop an account in which some statutes express long-term commitments, are intended to foreclose future deliberation, and enact reasons into the law. Such statutes have the status of what Holton calls “resolutions.” Like an individual resolving to stop eating meat, yet finding themself unable to resist, Congress can be weak willed when …

Introduction Emerging tick-borne viruses of medical and veterinary importance are increasingly being reported globally. This resurgence emphasizes the need for sustained surveillance to provide insights into tick-borne viral diversity and associated potential public health risks. We report on a virus tentatively designated Kinna virus (KIV) in the family Phenuiviridae and genus Bandavirus. The virus was isolated from a pool of Amblyomma gemma ticks from Kinna in Isiolo County, Kenya. High throughput sequencing of the virus isolate revealed close relatedness to the Guertu virus. The virus genome is consistent with the described genomes of other members of the genus Bandavirus, with …
Quantum-Enhanced Simulation-Based Optimization For Newsvendor Problems, Monit Sharma, Hoong Chuin Lau, Rudy Raymond
Quantum-Enhanced Simulation-Based Optimization For Newsvendor Problems, Monit Sharma, Hoong Chuin Lau, Rudy Raymond
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Simulation-based optimization is a widely used method to solve stochastic optimization problems. This method aims to identify an optimal solution by maximizing the expected value of the objective function. However, due to its computational complexity, the function cannot be accurately evaluated directly, hence it is estimated through simulation. Exploiting the enhanced efficiency of Quantum Amplitude Estimation (QAE) compared to classical Monte Carlo simulation, it frequently outpaces classical simulation-based optimization, resulting in notable performance enhancements in various scenarios. In this work, we make use of a quantum-enhanced algorithm for simulation-based optimization and apply it to solve a variant of the classical …
Administrative Arrest Warrants: Armed Encounters Outside The Judicial Process, Meg Penrose
Administrative Arrest Warrants: Armed Encounters Outside The Judicial Process, Meg Penrose

This Article considers three related questions. First, is a person “seized” under the Fourth Amendment when law enforcement restricts a person’s movements in their home and limits their ability to leave or go about their business? Second, does the answer to this seizure inquiry turn on the person’s citizenship status? And third, how do lawyers ensure that courts discard bad law? This last question is not a qualitative assessment— with good and bad law being tied to one’s legal ideology. Rather, certain legal holdings, dating back over half a century, have been whittled away if not entirely eroded. When this …

Unraveling The Dynamics Of Stable And Curious Audiences In Web Systems, Rodrigo Alves, Antoine Ledent, Renato Assunção, Pedro Vaz-De-Melo, Marius Kloft
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We propose the Burst-Induced Poisson Process (BPoP), a model designed to analyze time series data such as feeds or search queries. BPoP can distinguish between the slowly-varying regular activity of a stable audience and the bursty activity of a curious audience, often seen in viral threads. Our model consists of two hidden, interacting processes: a self-feeding process (SFP) that generates bursty behavior related to viral threads, and a non-homogeneous Poisson process (NHPP) with step function intensity that is influenced by the bursts from the SFP. The NHPP models the normal background behavior, driven solely by the overall popularity of the …

We propose a framework for a cloud-based application of an image classification system that is highly accessible, maintains data confidentiality, and robust to incorrect training labels. The end-to-end system is implemented using Amazon Web Services (AWS), with a detailed guide provided for replication, enhancing the ways which researchers can collaborate with a community of users for mutual benefits. A front-end web application allows users across the world to securely log in, contribute labelled training images conveniently via a drag-and-drop approach, and use that same application to query an up-to-date model that has knowledge of images from the community of users. …
Noise Leads To The Perceived Increase In Evolutionary Rates Over Short Time Scales, Brian C. O'Meara, Jeremy M. Beaulieu
Noise Leads To The Perceived Increase In Evolutionary Rates Over Short Time Scales, Brian C. O'Meara, Jeremy M. Beaulieu
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Across a variety of biological datasets, from genomes to conservation to the fossil record, evolutionary rates appear to increase toward the present or over short time scales. This has long been seen as an indication of processes operating differently at different time scales, even potentially as an indicator of a need for new theory connecting macroevolution and microevolution. Here we introduce a set of models that assess the relationship between rate and time and demonstrate that these patterns are statistical artifacts of time-independent errors present across ecological and evolutionary datasets, which produce hyperbolic patterns of rates through time. We show …

Diverse Origins Of Near-Identical Antifreeze Proteins In Unrelated Fish Lineages Provide Insights Into Evolutionary Mechanisms Of New Gene Birth And Protein Sequence Convergence, Nathan Rives, Vinita Lamba, C.H. Christina Cheng, Xuan Zhuang
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Determining the origins of novel genes and the mechanisms driving the emergence of new functions is challenging yet crucial for understanding evolutionary innovations. Recently evolved fish antifreeze proteins (AFPs) offer a unique opportunity to explore these processes, particularly the near-identical type I AFP (AFPI) found in four phylogenetically divergent fish taxa. This study tested the hypothesis of protein sequence convergence beyond functional convergence in three unrelated AFPI-bearing fish lineages. Through comprehensive comparative analyses of newly sequenced genomes of winter flounder and grubby sculpin, along with available high-quality genomes of cunner and 14 other related species, the study revealed that near-identical …

First-Principles Simulation Of The Interaction Between Dna Nucleotides And One-Dimensional Carbon Chain In Electrical Based Sequencing, Zeina Salman, Jin-Woo Kim, Steve Tung
Biological and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Electrical DNA sequencing has attracted significant attention in recent years due to its simplified sequencing protocol, compact sequencing system, and relatively low sequencing cost. In the design and fabrication of the sequencing device, carbon-based nanomaterials such as graphene have been explored as a promising sensing material that provides an excellent combination of spatial resolution and base specificity. Using first-principles simulation, we determined the effect on the electrical conductivity of a one-dimensional carbon chain due to the presence of four DNA bases. The simulation results indicate that the interaction between the carbon chain and different DNA bases leads to different levels …

A Curious Case Of Medium-Vessel Vasculitis, Nisa N Ilsin, Haleigh D Stafford, Anna Catinis, Theodore Rosen
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Vasculitis, or the inflammation of vessels due to primary or secondary causes, may arise from numerous etiologies, often leading to diagnostic uncertainty. Delayed treatment due to diagnostic or etiologic uncertainty presents a significant clinical risk, with consequences including organ failure and mortality. We describe a case of a 58-year-old male with a history including ankylosing spondylitis who presented with painful ulcers involving the bilateral lower extremities following a trip to the southern Texas border. Histopathology revealed medium-vessel vasculitis; however, the search for a likely etiology in the setting of a unique combination of potential vasculitis precipitants, including glochid inoculation, a …

Technoculture, which examines the intersection of culture and technology, has increasingly permeated archaeological practice, transforming both scholarly research and public engagement [1-3]. The introduction of digital tools such as virtual reality (VR), geographic information systems (GIS), and large language models (LLMs) has democratized access to archaeological knowledge, enabling communities to engage more actively with their cultural heritage [4-6]. This short article explores the mutual influence of technocultural studies and AI technologies on archaeology, with a focus on the preservation and reconstruction of cultural narratives through digital means.
The first aspect of this intersection lies in how technocultural tools are creating …
