Patients often report to the dental hospital with a complaint of toothache with extraoral swelling. Worried patients visit the dentist with a lot of apprehension. Acute dental infections with intraoral and extraoral swellings can be emergency and challenging to manage. Reduced mouth opening and severe pain may not allow the dentist to create an orthograde access to root canals. It ensues when the bacteria spread from the dental pulp to the surrounding periapical tissues accompanied by the formation of pus. If left untreated, these infections can be excruciatingly painful and pose a severe risk of spreading to facial spaces and …

Eggplant is prone to several fungal diseases, of which leaf spot disease is the one of the most devastating in the Mattu Gulla variety of eggplant. The current investigation focuses on assessing the pathogenicity of fungi associated with the leaf spot disease and the effects of fungal infection on host plant physiology, biochemistry, and metabolism. Four fungi, Alternaria solani, Alternaria alternata, Fusarium solani, and Lasiodiplodia theobromae, associated with leaf spot disease, were found to have pathogenic potential in Mattu Gulla. Plants inoculated with these pathogenic fungi altered photosynthetic rates and chlorophyll pigment contents as the fungal infection progressed, even though …

Pls-Based Hellinger Distance Method For Fault Detection In Chemical Engineering Systems, K. Ramakrishna Kini, Fouzi Harrou, Muddu Madakyaru, Ying Sun

Open Access archive

Fault detection is vital in chemical engineering systems to maintain operational efficiency, product quality, and safety through timely identification and correction of deviations from expected behavior. Although partial least squares (PLS) has proven effective in monitoring due to its ability to handle highly correlated variables, traditional detection metrics of PLS may fail to identify small abnormal changes as they rely solely on recent observations. This paper integrates PLS modeling framework with Hellinger Distance (HD)-based fault detection index to overcome the limitations of conventional detection metrics. The utilization of HD is motivated by its sensitivity to quantifying any dissimilarity between distributions, …

“Financially Palliative”: The Need To Address A Perplexing Financial Conundrum In Emergency And Critical Care, Rachana Bhat, Akshaya Ramaswami

Open Access archive

The terminology “Financially Palliative” is a pseudonym and refers to a unique challenge faced in countries where public healthcare insurance coverage is not robust and the percentage of out-of-pocket health expenditure continues to be high. Emergency and critical care healthcare expenditures in such circumstances usually pose additional burden as they are unforeseen expenses, disproportionately high, for which most people are unprepared. Such situations may lead into a vicious cycle that initiates with expenditure hesitancy and delay in definitive care, which in turn leads to deterioration in the patient’s condition and delay-related complications. This further fuels expenditure hesitancy due to uncertain …

Silala: A Missed Opportunity To Define The Equitable Utilitization Right?, Agnes Chong Sep 2024

Silala: A Missed Opportunity To Define The Equitable Utilitization Right?, Agnes Chong

Denver Journal of International Law & Policy

The Silala case was brought by Chile against Bolivia at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in 2016 over conflicting views of their respective substantive rights and obligations pertaining to the shared waters of the Silala River system. However, the outcome was far less than ideal, with the ICJ effectively deciding nothing about the dispute. The Court presumed the dispute had ‘disappeared’ as the parties converged on their positions mid-proceedings. Thus, the Court concluded it was not called to make a decision as there was no longer any object in the claims of the parties. Unfortunately, the Court presumed the …

The Truth Is Out There: Examining Whether International Commercial Arbitration Is A Conduit For Money Laundrering, Jaimee Salgado

Denver Journal of International Law & Policy

Since the beginning of the 21st century, investigative journalists uncovered hundreds of corrupt individuals using thousands of shell companies to evade taxes, and sometimes even launder billions of dollars using court systems for legitimacy. International commercial arbitration has fallen victim to illicit activity as well, with sham arbitrations sprouting into public view in recent years. While international organizations have made progress in increasing transparency in the use of tax havens and shell corporations, there is no identifiable data for whether corrupt individuals are conducting sham arbitrations to launder money, much like the aforementioned use of court systems. The troubling notion …

The Spirit Of International Investment Law And The Allocation Of Costs In Investor-State Arbitration, Noam Zamir Sep 2024

The Spirit Of International Investment Law And The Allocation Of Costs In Investor-State Arbitration, Noam Zamir

Denver Journal of International Law & Policy

This article discusses and clarifies the meaning and importance of the spirit of international investment law. It submits that the spirit of international investment law should guide the allocation of the costs of investor-state arbitrations.

The article then examines the treaty and arbitral cost allocation practices in investor-state arbitration. Among other things, it includes quantitative research of the international investment agreements (IIAs) adopted between 2016 and mid-2024. It shows that most IIAs are silent on the allocation of costs in investor-state arbitrations, leaving arbitrators with broad discretion to address this issue. Arbitrators have indeed exercised their discretion. The article demonstrates …

Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce Faculty Publications

Existing literature on the behaviour of rising powers in global trade governance has yielded inconclusive evidence about their role and impact. This article contributes to this literature by examining China's role in global digital trade governance, an issue area which so far has not received sufficient scholarly attention. Specifically, it addresses the following question: as a self-proclaimed leader of the developing world in digital development, to what extent do its preferences and negotiation approach align with the interests of other developing countries? Analysing China's participation in three sets of negotiations using process tracing, the article argues that China's dual identity …

Design And Analysis Of Self-Tanked Stepwise Charging Circuit For Four-Phase Adiabatic Logic, William Morell, Jin Woo Choi Sep 2024

Design And Analysis Of Self-Tanked Stepwise Charging Circuit For Four-Phase Adiabatic Logic, William Morell, Jin Woo Choi

Michigan Tech Publications

Adiabatic logic has been proposed as a method for drastically reducing power consumption in specialized low-power circuits. They often require specialized clock drivers that also function as the main power supply, in contrast to standard CMOS logic, and these power clocks are often a point of difficulty in the design process. A novel, stepwise charging driver circuit for four-phase adiabatic logic is proposed and validated through a simulation study. The proposed circuit consists of two identical driver circuits each driving two opposite adiabatic logic phases. Its performance relative to ideal step-charging and a standard CMOS across mismatched phase loads is …

Election Reform And Campaign Finance: Did Alaska's Top 4 Nonpartisan Primaries And Ranked-Choice General Elections Affect Political Spending?, Zachary Albert, Robert G. Boatright, Lane Cuthbert, Adam Eichen, Wouter Van Erve, Raymond J. La Raja, Meredith Rolfe Sep 2024

Political Science

Objective: Ranked-choice voting (RCV) is increasingly seen as a way to reduce political polarization and increase voter choice in elections, but little is known about its effect on candidate fundraising. In 2022, Alaska held its first election using a nonpartisan Top 4 primary followed by a ranked-choice general election. We analyze the effect of this new system on campaign financing practices in state legislative elections. There are many reasons to expect RCV to increase campaign spending, broaden the donor pool, and prompt donors to support candidates to whom they would not otherwise contribute. Method: We measure changes in fundraising over …
