To date, symptom documentation has mostly relied on clinical notes in electronic health records or patient-reported outcomes using disease-specific symptom inventories. To provide a common and precise language for symptom recording, assessment, and research, a comprehensive list of symptom codes is needed. The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (“IRA”) is the largest investment in climate change mitigation and adaptation in American history. The IRA appropriates more than $142 billion to carry out activities designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect against the impacts of climate change. This includes up to $37 billion in appropriations for federal loans and loan guarantees, and nearly $105 billion allocated for grants, awards, and other direct spending by federal agencies. The widespread production and use of multi-fluorinated carbon-based substances for a variety of purposes has contributed to the contamination of the global water supply in recent decades. Conventional wastewater treatment can reduce contaminants to acceptable levels, but the concen- trated retentate stream is still a burden to the environment. A selective anion-exchange membrane capable of capture and controlled release could further concentrate necessary contaminants, mak- ing their eventual degradation or long-term storage easier. To this end, commercial microfiltration membranes were modified using pore functionalization to incorporate an anion-exchange moiety within the membrane matrix. Background Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder that affects 6–12% of United States women of reproductive age. Because women with PCOS are at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, clinical practice guidelines from a number of organizations (e.g. American Diabetes Association, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, US Preventive Services Task Force) recommend that individuals with PCOS are routinely screened for diabetes. Guidelines further indicate that an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) should be used for diabetes screening in women with PCOS as opposed to an A1C or fasting plasma glucose test. Objectives: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with sleep deficits, but it is not clear why some report sleep disturbances and others do not. The objective of this study was to assess the associations between axonal injury, sleep, and memory in chronic and acute TBI. Methods: Data were acquired from two independent datasets which included 156 older adult veterans (69.8 years) from the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) with prior moderate- to-severe TBIs and 90 (69.2 years) controls and 374 (39.6 years) from Transforming Research and Clinical Knowledge in TBI (TRACK-TBI) with a recent mild TBI (mTBI) and 87 controls …

There are currently three options when it comes to managing obesity: (1) making nutritional and activity changes; (2) weight loss medications; and (3) weight loss surgery. The existing limited options for managing obesity are even more restricted for Medicare patients. Making lifestyle changes might not be effective for a variety of reasons, including persistent food cravings and experiences of weight stigma from healthcare providers. To qualify for weight loss surgery, Medicare patients must satisfy several criteria in addition to the already specific weight loss surgery requirements. Urban and storm water retention ponds eventually become eutrophic after years of receiving runoff water. In 2020, a novel biological and chemical treatment was initiated to remove accumulated nutrients from an urban retention pond that had severe algae and weed growth. Our approach installed two 6.1 m × 6.1 m floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) and two airlift pumps that contained slow-release lanthanum composites, which facilitated phosphate precipitation. Four years of treatment (2020–2023) resulted in median nitrate-N concentrations decreasing from 23 μg L−1 in 2020 to 1.3 μg L−1 in 2023, while PO4-P decreased from 42 μg L−1 to 19 μg …

Planetary health is an emerging field that emphasises that humans depend on a healthy Earth for survival and, conversely, that the sustainability of Earth systems is dependent on human behaviours. Biochar and organic fertilizer can significantly increase soil organic carbon (SOC) and promote agricultural production, but it is still unclear how they affect forest SOC after. Here, low-quality plantation soil was subjected to four distinct fertilization treatments: (CK, without fertilization; BC, tea seed shell biochar alone; OF, tea meal organic fertilizer alone; BCF, tea seed shell biochar plus tea meal organic fertilizer). Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook and Cyclobalanopsis glauca (Thunb.) Oersted seedlings were then planted in pots at the ratios of 2:0, 1:1, and 0:2 (SS, SQ, QQ) and grown for one year. The right to reproductive privacy is under attack in the United States, and it is losing ground. Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision that overruled Roe v. Wade’s constitutional protection of abortion and jeopardized privacy rights by proxy, reflects this losing posture. Scholarship in reproductive privacy varyingly critiques federal privacy initiatives, evaluates regulatory interventions, and proposes civil rights frameworks in response to Dobbs. This Article, however, pinpoints how Dobbs created a gaping hole in state consumer privacy laws even as they propagated across the United States. Currently, there are no state consumer privacy …

Federal agencies’ cost-benefit analyses do not capture nonhuman animals’ (animals’) interests. This omission matters. Cost-benefit analysis drives many regulatory decisions that substantially affect billions of animals. That omission creates a regulatory blind spot that is untenable as a matter of morality and of policy.

This Article advances two claims related to valuing animals in cost-benefit analyses, dubbed the “Weak Claim” and the “Strong Claim.” The Weak Claim argues that agencies typically may value animals in cost-benefit analyses. Usually, no legal prohibitions exist, and such valuation is within agencies’ legitimate discretion. The Strong Claim argues that agencies often must do so …

We examine the problem of accommodating outliers in 𝑟 × 𝑐 tables of measurement data when there are no replications. The suggested strategy for the determination of the cells that contain outliers and for handling them analytically is easily understood and implemented in practice and presented in even the most elementary statistics course along with the course’s ANOVA material.

This book is a powerful work that will influence and inspire future scholarship in the field. The North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services Oral Health Program (OHP) has established a school-based dental sealant program (SEAL!ND) which has been providing dental sealants, fluoride varnish applications, oral health education, and dental screenings and referrals for students throughout North Dakota dating back to 2012. School-based sealant programs are a highly effective way to deliver preventive oral health services and dental sealants to children less likely to receive private dental care.
