The Effect Of Acute Hypoxia Exposure, With Exercise, On Bone Metabolic Biomarkers, Alyssa Bailly May 2026

The Effect Of Acute Hypoxia Exposure, With Exercise, On Bone Metabolic Biomarkers, Alyssa Bailly

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Hypoxic environments, resulting from decreased atmospheric partial pressure of oxygen, reduce oxygen availability in the blood and tissues, leading to a mismatch between supply and demand. This elicits several physiological adaptations and may influence bone metabolism. Although evidence suggests that hypoxia can modulate bone remodeling through hypoxia-inducible pathways, findings remain mixed, with most data derived from chronic hypoxic exposures in animal and cell culture models. Exercise, an essential stimulus for bone health, may exacerbate hypoxic stress; however, the skeletal response to acute hypoxic exposure combined with exercise remains unclear. We propose that intermittent exercise in hypoxia may increase negative markers …

Data were analyzed using open and …

La Raza In The U.S.-Mexico Borderlands: A Comparative Regional Study Of Mexican American Elite Identity-Making From Texan Independence To The Mexican Revolution, Davis Diego Massey May 2026

La Raza In The U.S.-Mexico Borderlands: A Comparative Regional Study Of Mexican American Elite Identity-Making From Texan Independence To The Mexican Revolution, Davis Diego Massey

History ETDs

After the U.S. annexed much of Mexico following the Mexican-American War, Mexicans in the incorporated regions began to think of themselves as a racial group within the U.S. rather than a distinctive nationality. The 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo promised citizenship rights to all Mexicans in the area. The Treaty promises rarely were put into practice, as they were left up to the enforcement of territories and states. Even where enforced, the rights of citizenship were restricted and defined on the basis of race. Local laws excluded Afro-Mexicans and Mexican Natives from exercising the rights promised by the Treaty. This …

The Seeds Of Empire: Endogenous Influences On The Politics Of Bakumatsu And Meiji Era Japan (1853-1912), Benedict M.D. Talley May 2026

The Seeds Of Empire: Endogenous Influences On The Politics Of Bakumatsu And Meiji Era Japan (1853-1912), Benedict M.D. Talley

History ETDs

In this thesis, I argue the roots of Japanese nationalism, exceptionalism, and imperialism long preceded renewed contact with the West following American Commodore Matthew Perry’s historic 1853 expedition. Rather, late Edo Period (1603-1868) and Meiji Era (1868-1912) intellectuals and political figures looked to and were inspired by endogenous forces, ideologies, and intellectual movements of the Edo Period. Through a synthesis of secondary scholarship and analysis of Bakufu and Meiji Era figures’ writing, I seek to uncover the endogenous influences and de-emphasize western influence on the development of late nineteenth and early twentieth century Japanese nationalism and imperialism.

Stochastic Derivative-Free Deep Learning Methods For Solving High Dimensional Partial Differential Equations, Qing He Mr. May 2026

Stochastic Derivative-Free Deep Learning Methods For Solving High Dimensional Partial Differential Equations, Qing He Mr.

Mathematics Theses and Dissertations

Solving high-dimensional partial differential equations (PDEs) is a fundamental challenge in scientific computing, with applications ranging from quantum chemistry and computational finance to statistical physics and stochastic optimal control.  Classical numerical methods such as finite element or finite difference schemes suffer from the curse of dimensionality, rendering them computationally infeasible when the dimension $d$ exceeds a handful. Physics-informed neural network (PINN) methods alleviate this by embedding the PDE residual directly into a loss function, but they require computing derivatives of the network with respect to its spatial inputs---an operation that scales poorly in high dimensions and demands that the approximate …

Technical Advancements In Single-Molecule Spectroscopy For High-Throughput Measurement Of Long-Time Dynamics, Quyen B. Le May 2026

Technical Advancements In Single-Molecule Spectroscopy For High-Throughput Measurement Of Long-Time Dynamics, Quyen B. Le

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

Single-molecule fluorescence spectroscopy is a powerful technique for resolving transient biomolecular dynamics and quantifying free energy landscapes, kinetics, and binding interactions. However, two fundamental limitations restrict its broader application: slow, labor-intensive data acquisition and the limited observation time imposed by fluorophore photobleaching. These limitations hinder its use in drug discovery and biomedical engineering applications that require both high-throughput and access to long-time dynamics. In this work, both challenges are addressed through technical advancements. First, a simple, generalizable approach is introduced to automate data acquisition, eliminating manual intervention during experiments. This increases the acquisition rate by more than an order of …

Development Of A Lead-Lithium Eutectic Magnetohydrodynamic Loop For Corrosion Studies, Xavier S. Angus May 2026

Development Of A Lead-Lithium Eutectic Magnetohydrodynamic Loop For Corrosion Studies, Xavier S. Angus

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

Lead–lithium eutectic (LLE) is a leading candidate coolant and tritium breeder for fusion reactor blankets due to its favorable heat transfer properties and high tritium breeding ratio. However, LLE is highly corrosive and, in the strong magnetic fields present in fusion reactors, experiences magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effects that can produce significant pressure drops and flow instabilities. Understanding corrosion behavior in these extreme environments is essential for assessing the viability of LLE blanket systems. This work presents the design and construction of a forced-convection LLE corrosion loop to study corrosion behavior at temperatures up to 425 °C and flow velocities up to …

A Colonial Past Revisited: An Authethnography Of Outsider And Insider Identities In Indigenous Education Communities, Tara L. Deyoung May 2026

A Colonial Past Revisited: An Authethnography Of Outsider And Insider Identities In Indigenous Education Communities, Tara L. Deyoung

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

In the late 90s, at Rehoboth Christian school, a small private boarding school in northwest New Mexico, I had four different English teachers in my four years of high school. All but two of my teachers at that time would be considered outsiders to the community in which they taught. Teacher outsiders leave schools and districts at higher rates than insiders to a community; this is especially true for rural and remote areas (Hudson et al., 2020). The purpose of this autoethnographic study is to analyze my history as a cultural outsider and insider in relation to my core beliefs …

Lowering Class Size To Improve Teaching And Learning Mathematics In Early Grades, Dianne S. Mccarthy May 2026

Lowering Class Size To Improve Teaching And Learning Mathematics In Early Grades, Dianne S. Mccarthy

Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education

Fourth-grade mathematics proficiency in the United States remains low, with only 39–57% of students meeting proficiency standards on NAEP, New York State, and TIMSS assessments. This article argues that reducing class sizes in the early grades (K–3) is an effective strategy to improve teaching and learning in mathematics. Evidence from the Tennessee STAR study and supporting research (Clanet, 2010; Cho et al., 2012) shows that smaller classes yield statistically significant and lasting gains in student achievement. Benefits include stronger teacher-student relationships, increased individualized attention, fewer disruptions, and more active student engagement. These conditions enable high-impact, constructivist approaches such as inquiry-based …

Reining In The Patent Troll: Lessons The United States Can Learn From Its Northern Neighbors, Megan Petras May 2026

Reining In The Patent Troll: Lessons The United States Can Learn From Its Northern Neighbors, Megan Petras

Loyola of Los Angeles International and Comparative Law Review

In patent law, non-practicing entities (NPEs) are patent holders who do not practice their patented invention. In recent years, there has been concern over a particular type of NPE, the patent troll. Patent trolls are said to harm innovation because they do not come up with any new ideas themselves, but instead buy up patents cheaply, find potential infringers, and threaten litigation to receive large settlements or damage awards. Interestingly, the patent troll problem is considered to be primarily a problem in the United States. While comparisons have been made between the existence of patent trolls in the European Un-ion …

Kinetic Study Of Oil–Water Separation In A Dual Port Inlet Cyclone Separator, Ikhwanul Qiram, Agung Nugroho

Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Technology (JMEST)

In this study, a Computational Fluid Dynamics method is used to investigate the oil–water separation kinetics in a dual-port inlet cyclone separator. This was achieved using the Reynolds Stress Model coupled to an Eulerian multiphase framework. Three Reynolds numbers were studied (Re = 1.41×10⁵, 1.94×10⁵ and 2.52×10⁵) to analyse the flow; axial velocity distribution, vortex stability, radial migration velocity and separation efficiency were examined individually. Results indicate that both the radial migration velocity (vᵣ) and separation probability (premove) grow with Reynolds number, especially for larger oil droplets (10–100 µm). The best condition concerned is that …
