Over the past 12 years, infections from the ubiquitous coastal bacterium and human pathogen V. parahaemolyticus have increased in the Northeast USA. The majority of the infections here are caused by the hypervirulent ST36 which originated in the Pacific Northwest USA where it caused only sporadic infections. This sequence type seems to have found its niche in the Northwest Atlantic where climate events likely created environmental conditions allowing ST36 strains or strains carrying one of the unique virulence factors on the VPaIγ, associated with this sequence type, to maintain and spread up the coast of New England. These water sources increase the risk of contamination from bacteria and pathogens from nearby humans and animals. Ingestion of contaminated water can cause illnesses, and in extreme cases, death. While the technology to decrease or even eliminate the risk of contamination in drinking water exists, most of these methods require electricity, which is not necessarily readily available or sustainable in developing countries. Wildfires in the Arctic tundra are increasing in frequency in response to global warming.Under this changing fire regime, important components of permafrost ecosystems, such as soils and their microbial communities, are disturbed by the burning of vegetation, organic soils, and their nutrients. Previous studies of wildfires have documented significant changes in nutrient availability following wildfires, including an increase in inorganic nitrogen (N), which is a key nutrient component of soil organisms. Entanglements in rope fishing gear significantly threaten the critically endangered North Atlantic Right Whale’s health and population (Knowlton, 2022; Brooker & Matthias, 2020). This thesis investigates the potential to mitigate the risk of whale entanglements in ocean structure tether components by using stiff fiberglass composite rods instead of rope. Growing shrimp with extractive species is gaining momentum to reduce effluent waste in aquaculture systems. Preliminary experiments were conducted at the University of New Hampshire’s Spaulding laboratory to calculate total ammonia nitrogen uptake rates by Gracilaria vermiculophylla and output rates by whiteleg shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei. Based on these results, oysters and red algae were incorporated into a shrimp recirculating aquaculture system at University of New Hampshire’s Coastal Marine Laboratory to determine their effectiveness in reducing dissolved nitrogen. INTRODUCTION AND PURPOSE: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a common condition that limits function and reduces quality of life. Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a surgical procedure that replaces the joint surfaces to address anatomical changes due to knee OA. While TKA improves symptoms and function, postoperative impairments are common, including reduced quadriceps strength. The Supreme Court confronted racial discrimination in jury selection in Batson v. Kentucky by prohibiting the use of race as a factor in exercising peremptory challenges. But Batson challenges rarely succeed in overcoming a challenged peremptory strike and have long been criticized as insufficient to eliminate racial discrimination in jury selection. Justice Marshall correctly predicted in his concurring opinion in Batson that racial discrimination in jury selection would continue as long as peremptory challenges were permissible.

Conventional cost-benefit analysis asks whether a regulation’s total benefits exceed its total costs but not whether those benefits and costs are distributed fairly across society. The traditional justification for this indifference to equity is that distributional concerns are most efficiently addressed through the tax-and-transfer system. Agencies issuing regulations, the story goes, should focus on growing the pie (i.e., increasing aggregate welfare). If the regulation that yields the largest pie also yields inequitably apportioned slices, Congress can correct the problem with taxes and transfers.

Title IX prohibits recipients of federal funding from discriminating on the basis of sex in their education programs and activities. The regulations implementing Title IX impose strict requirements on the procedures that institutions must follow in investigating and adjudicating complaints of sexual harassment. But survivors using campus processes are facing potential liability for defamation at an increasing rate. The existence of this threat leads to further underreporting of an already-underreported crime, a detrimental impact on survivors’ education, and psychological stress created by the re-traumatization of a civil suit that carries potential monetary liability for their report. in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization has forced many

clinics in rural Appalachia that previously provided access to holistic

sexual and reproductive health services, such as contraception

management, sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing, and preventative

cancer screening, to close their doors entirely. This has left

many Appalachians living in rural communities with no option for

accessing sexual and reproductive healthcare. However, many people

were never able to access the care even before the recent provider

Control over the U.S. southern border has become one of the most contentious issues in American politics. Any migrant who crosses that border into the United States has a statutory right to seek asylum. Butthe process for adjudicating asylum claims in the nation’s immigration courts has essentially collapsed, with waiting times for hearings averaging about four years. Between artificial intelligence threatening to take our jobs and destroy the world while adopting the aesthetic of the weird and a presidential election that could have been partially determined by how people feel about being weird, it seems like the weird is taking over. In this Article, I make the case for embracing the weird. Only by embracing our own weirdness can we make sense of the weirdness (or lack thereof) of those that we do not understand. In this article, we extend a theory of disorientations to reveal how attempts to fix and control both water and people are disrupting once-fluid relationships between the Tonle Sap Lake and communities who have lived with-on the lake for generations. Using ethnographic and participatory mapping methods, we examine the socio-ecological dynamics that preceded and succeeded in the forced relocation of three floating communities in 2018. We argue that communities’ experiences challenge land-centric and event-centric understandings of displacement that pathologise fluid lifeways and fail to account for the materiality of water that has shaped floating villages’ multi-generational relationships with their wetland …

Question asking is a prevalent aspect of children’s speech, providing a means by which young learners can rapidly gain information about the world. Previous research has demonstrated that children exhibit sensitivity to the knowledge state of potential informants in laboratory settings. However, it remains unclear whether and how young children are inclined to direct questions that support learning deeper content to more knowledgeable informants in naturalistic classroom contexts. Introduction: Fibroscan is a noninvasive tool for measuring liver fibrosis. This study was done to assess liver fibrosis in thalassemic children and to correlate fibroscan findings with supportive markers of increased iron store such as serum ferritin. Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted in children between five and 18 years of age diagnosed with beta thalassemia major who were on regular blood transfusion. The fibroscan findings of liver were correlated with serum ferritin, liver enzymes, and blood transfusion requirements. Automotive turbochargers, essential for enhancing intake air pressure and boosting torque in internal combustion engines, operate at exceptionally high rotational speeds of approximately 100,000 to 300,000 rpm. Despite the implementation of dual or triple air filtration systems to filter contaminants, neglected maintenance can lead to clogged filters, resulting in the ingestion of metallic filter mesh, and other small-sized objects from filter indicators, washers, and plastic components into the turbocharger assembly. Purpose of Review: Periodontitis, one of the most prevalent diseases in the world, is caused by the accumulation of dysbiotic microbial biofilm on the teeth leading to chronic inflammation of the tissues surrounding the teeth. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), obesity, chronic stress, and smoking are some of the risk factors for the disease. A high-carbohydrate diet also increases the risk of periodontal inflammation. Modifying diet and nutrition could serve as a preventive and therapeutic tool to target multiple risk factors simultaneously.
