Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

Acne vulgaris is a pervasive skin disease characterized by inflammation of sebaceous units surrounding hair follicles. It results from the complex interplay between skin physiology and the intricate cutaneous microbiome. Current acne treatments, while effective, have major limitations, prompting a shift towards microbiome-based therapeutic approaches. This study aims to determine the relationship between acne and the cutaneous microbiome, assess the effects of current treatments on the cutaneous microbiome and explore the implications for developing new therapies. A systematic review was performed using PubMed and SCOPUS databases within the last 10 years. Methodological quality was assessed independently by two authors. The …

OER & Beyond - Blog Archive

I enrolled in a Spanish 101 course my freshman year of college to ful ll a language requirement, and I gasped to nd that the required text Dos Mundos would run me about $180. This was in 2003, and my only income was a part-time job at the public library where I was making minimum wage – $6.75/hour at the time in Massachusetts. I was also trying to maintain my very used car as a commuter student and pay the litany of other expenses that started to emerge in my newfound adulthood. The acquisition of this book was a “core …

Tribal governments bear an uneven burden in the face of escalating disaster risks, climate change, and environmental degradation, primarily due to their deeply entrenched ties to the environment and its resources. Regrettably, accessing vital information and evidence to secure adequate funding or support poses difficulties for enrolled tribal members and their lands. In response to these challenges, this article collaborates with tribal nations to co-design intelligent disaster management systems using AI chatbots and drone technologies. The primary objective is to explore how tribal governments perceive and experience these emerging technologies in the realm of disaster reporting practices. This article presents …

Publishing Mathematics Education Research In English: Amplifying Voices From The Field, Lisa Darragh, Karin Brodie, Anjum Halai, Núria Planas, Despina Potari, Manuel Santos-Trigo, Thorsten Scheiner, Janet Walkoe

Office of the Provost

In this paper we investigate the issue of representation within the Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education (JMTE) and the broader academic publishing landscape, particularly focusing on the underrepresentation of authors from various world regions. A questionnaire, distributed globally, aimed to amplify the voices of the underrepresented, exploring the constraints and affordances of publishing in English-medium mathematics education research journals. The question that guided our investigation was: What do voices from the mathematics education community raise in their responses to questions about publishing in English-medium research journals like JMTE? We used qualitative methods to review the responses and identify common themes. …

Some Studies On Mathematical Morphology In Remotely Sensed Data Analysis, Geetika Barman Sep 2024

Some Studies On Mathematical Morphology In Remotely Sensed Data Analysis, Geetika Barman

Doctoral Theses

The application of Mathematical Morphology (MM) techniques has proven to be beneficial in the extraction of shapebased and texture-based features during remote sensing image analysis. The characteristics of these techniques, such as nonlinear adaptability and comprehensive lattice structure, make them useful for contextual spatial feature analysis. Despite the advancements, there are still persistent challenges, including the curse of dimensionality, maintaining spatial correlation, and the adaptability of morphological operators in higher dimensions. The focus of this thesis is to explore the potential of MM-based methods to analyse spatial features in addressing these challenges, specifically in the context of spatialcontextual feature analysis …

Carbon Isotope Budget Indicates Biological Disequilibrium Dominated Ocean Carbon Storage At The Last Glacial Maximum, Anne Willem Omta Sep 2024

Carbon Isotope Budget Indicates Biological Disequilibrium Dominated Ocean Carbon Storage At The Last Glacial Maximum, Anne Willem Omta

Faculty Scholarship

Understanding the causes of the ~90 ppmv atmospheric CO2 swings between glacial and interglacial climates is an important open challenge in paleoclimate research. Although the regularity of the glacial-interglacial cycles hints at a single driving mechanism, Earth System models require many independent physical and biological processes to explain the full observed CO2 signal. Here we show that biologically sequestered carbon in the ocean can explain an atmospheric CO2 change of 75 ± 40 ppmv, based on a mass balance calculation using published carbon isotopic measurements. An analysis of the carbon isotopic signatures of different water masses indicates similar regenerated carbon …

Test Optional Admissions: A Case Study On Access And Persistence For Underrepresented Students In Higher Education, Lori M. Kemmet Sep 2024

Test Optional Admissions: A Case Study On Access And Persistence For Underrepresented Students In Higher Education, Lori M. Kemmet

Student Theses and Dissertations

It is commonly accepted that primary and secondary education help maintain social and economic stability, but there is also consensus that postsecondary education contributes to social and economic mobility. While there have been improved enrollment numbers among minoritized and low socioeconomic populations over time, there is still disproportionate underrepresentation among Black, Latino(a), Native American, and less economically privileged students in higher education, the disparity is ever more apparent when considering university degree completion rates among these underserved groups. Although test-optional admissions were implemented due to the inability of high school students to take the SAT or ACT during the COVID-19 …

Environmental Dynamics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Remote sensing tools, along with Global Navigation Satellite System cattle collars and digital soil maps, may help elucidate spatiotemporal relationships among soils, terrain, forages, and animals. However, standard computational procedures preclude systems-level evaluations across this continuum due to data inoperability and processing limitations. Deep learning, a subset of neural network, may elucidate efficiency of livestock production and linkages within the livestock-grazing environment. Consequently, we applied deep learning to environmental remote sensing data to (1) develop predictive models for yield and forage nutrition based on vegetation indices and (2) at a pixel-level (per 55 m2), identify how grazing is …
