The Effects Of Race-Related Stress, Racial Socialization And Burnout In African American Teachers Who Attended Hbcus Vs. Pwis, Catava M. Burton
The Effects Of Race-Related Stress, Racial Socialization And Burnout In African American Teachers Who Attended Hbcus Vs. Pwis, Catava M. Burton
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Prior research has indicated racial socialization (RS) safeguards against race-related stress (RRS). Despite previous investigations, there has been a dearth of scholarship exclusively examining how RRS, RS, and burnout effect African American teachers with divergent collegiate experiences. To illuminate this research gap, this quantitative study used an online survey to examine the predictive role of RRS and RS on burnout in African American teachers (N = 20) who attended HBCUs or PWIs. This study also measured the potential moderating role of collegiate experience on RRS and RS. The respondents were administered the Trauma Symptoms of Discrimination Scale (TSDS), Cultural and …
Shine A Light Into The Darkness: Illuminating The Battles Fought By Civil War Prisoners Of War, Marybeth Allison
Shine A Light Into The Darkness: Illuminating The Battles Fought By Civil War Prisoners Of War, Marybeth Allison
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Four hundred thousand Union and Confederate soldiers found themselves imprisoned by the enemy during the American Civil War. Of that number, over fifty-six thousand captives died in the prison camps while their comrades endured unspeakable conditions. The amount of misery and suffering inside these prisons is undeniable, and the history of Civil War prisons encompasses a dark chapter in American history. Much scholarship exists on the prisons and the conditions of the prisons; however, this work focuses on the prisoners’ experiences in their own words. Prisoners continued fighting battles, and most of all, they battled to find light in the …

Characteristics Of Natural Environment Use By Occupational Therapists Working In Mental Health Care: A Scoping Review, Ruth Bishop, Frazer Underwood, Fiona Fraser, Lisa Burrows, Jill Shawe
School of Health Professions
Objective: The objective of this review was to identify and characterize the use of the natural environment/outdoor space by occupational therapists working in mental health care. This included consideration of the characteristics of the environment used, interventions, mental health conditions being treated, and the outcomes being used. Introduction: Research has demonstrated the link between human health and the environment. The benefits appear to be particularly relevant to people with mental health conditions. Occupational therapists already consider the environment when assessing and developing interventions, and therefore are well placed to consider and use the natural environment in mental health practice. However, …

Early diagnosis and intervention for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has been shown to significantly improve the quality of life of autistic individuals. However, diagnostics methods for ASD rely on assessments based on clinical presentation that are prone to bias and can be challenging to arrive at an early diagnosis. There is a need for objective biomarkers of ASD which can help improve diagnostic accuracy. Deep learning (DL) has achieved outstanding performance in diagnosing diseases and conditions from medical imaging data. Extensive research has been conducted on creating models that classify ASD using resting-state functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) data. However, …

In cases involving a petition to terminate parental rights where one parent retains physical custody of the child, or children in question, courts should not apply NRS 128.107 nor NRS 128.109. Instead, courts should terminate parental rights only if termination serves the best interest of the child and parental fault exists.

The Nevada Supreme Court established that, in order to demonstrate a breach of the implied warranty of fitness for a particular purpose, the purchaser is not required to show that the seller had actual knowledge of the particular purpose for which the goods were purchased but needs only to demonstrate that the seller had reason to know of the particular purpose. The Court affirmed the ruling of the lower court in favor of the plaintiff-purchaser Pavestone, LLC that defendant-seller Hi-Tech Aggregate, LLC breached the implied warranty of fitness for a particular purpose that was attached to its sale of aggregate …

Prior to AmTrust, Nevada courts were guided not by statute, but by common law, when assessing the degree to which an insurer may assert a claim to damages its insured worker obtained from a third party. One case required courts to use a formula, making insurers bear a portion of the litigation fees and costs when the insurer did not timely intervene. The other limited the portions of the settlement against which insurers could assert a claim, in conflict with the language of NRS § 616C.215.The Court in AmTrust held that the Breen formula is unworkable and that both Breen …

If an amendment that increases the amount of attorney fees a short trial judge may award goes into effect before trial, and the parties had reasonable notice of this change, the new rules will be applicable to the trial. This applies even if the request for trial was filed before the amendment was ordered, and litigation was still pending when the amendment took effect. This is because an increase in the amount of attorney fees that a short trial judge may award is not an alteration of a substantive right, but rather a procedural change to an already existing remedy.

Solar flares are significant occurrences in solar physics, impacting space weather and terrestrial technologies. Accurate classification of solar flares is essential for predicting space weather and minimizing potential disruptions to communication, navigation, and power systems. This study addresses the challenge of selecting the most relevant features from multivariate time-series data, specifically focusing on solar flares. We employ methods such as Mutual Information (MI), Minimum Redundancy Maximum Relevance (mRMR), and Euclidean Distance to identify key features for classification. Recognizing the performance variability of different feature selection techniques, we introduce an ensemble approach to compute feature weights. By combining outputs from multiple …

Runoff from rapidly melting mountain glaciers is a dominant source of riverine organic carbon in many high-latitude and high-elevation regions. Glacier dissolved organic carbon is highly bioavailable, and its composition likely reflects internal (e.g., autotrophic production) and external (i.e., atmospheric deposition) sources. However, the balance of these sources across Earth's glaciers is poorly understood, despite implications for the mineralization and assimilation of glacier organic carbon within recipient ecosystems. We assessed the molecular-level composition of dissolved organic matter from 136 mountain glacier outflows from 11 regions covering six continents using ultrahigh resolution 21 T mass spectrometry. We found substantial diversity in …

Apoptosis is an evolutionarily conserved cell death pathway that plays a crucial role in maintaining tissue homeostasis, orchestrating organismal development, and eliminating damaged cells. Dysregulation of apoptosis can contribute to the pathogenesis of malignant tumors and neurodegenerative diseases. Anticancer drugs typically possess the capacity to induce apoptosis in tumor cells. The Bcl-2 protein family, consisting of 27 members in humans, serves as the key regulator of mitochondrial function. This family can be divided into two functional groups: anti-apoptotic proteins (e.g., Bcl-2, Bcl-xl, Mcl-1) and pro-apoptotic proteins (e.g., Bad, Bax). Mcl-1 exerts its function by binding pro-apoptotic Bcl-2 proteins thereby preventing …
