People Or Profit? The National Mediation Board Must Also Prioritize Workers, Leah Susman Sep 2024

People Or Profit? The National Mediation Board Must Also Prioritize Workers, Leah Susman

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights and Social Justice (ERSJ) Blog

For over five years, United Airlines (“United”) flight attendants, represented by their union, the Association of Flight Attendants (“AFA-UA”), have faced stalled contract negotiations with United management.  The AFA-UA is calling for wage increases and improved schedule flexibility.  The starting pay rate for a United flight attendant maxes out at about $25,992 per year, and some employees have to rely on food stamps and alternative housing options because they cannot afford to pay rent.  Unwilling to work under these conditions any longer, the AFA-UA voted 99.99% in favor to authorize a strike on August 24, 2024.

Expanding The Scope: Multimodal Dimensions In Aphasia Discourse Analysis—Preliminary Findings, Manaswita Dutta, Bijoyaa Mohapatra

Speech and Hearing Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background:

Aphasia, resulting from acquired brain injury, disrupts language processing and usage, significantly impacting individuals’ social communication and life participation. Given the limitations of traditional assessments in capturing the nuanced challenges faced by individuals with aphasia, this study seeks to explore the potential benefits of integrating multimodal communication elements into discourse analysis to better capture narrative proficiency in this population.ObjectiveThis study examined how incorporating multimodal communication elements (e.g., physical gestures, writing, drawing) into discourse analysis may affect the narrative outcomes of persons with aphasia compared to those observed using methods that exclude multimodal considerations.

Methods:

Participants included individuals with chronic …

Ayala, Laurel Beaty, Christina Bemrich-Stolz, Claudia Borzutzky, Tazim Dowlut-Mcelroy, Sweta Gupta, Kendra Hutchens, Corinna L. Schultz, Lakshmi Srivaths, Maria C. Velez, Neeraja Swaminathan

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) is common, and 20-30% of patients presenting with HMB are diagnosed with an inherited bleeding disorder (IBD). Despite the frequent association of HMB with bleeding disorders, specific learning objectives on this topic are lacking for Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBGYN) residents. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the exposure of OBGYN residents to didactics, clinical training, and confidence in evaluation and management of patients with HMB due to IBDs. METHODS: Prospective survey of OBGYN residents through email solicitation. Residents were invited to complete an anonymous 26-item survey, querying residents' confidence in evaluation and management of HMB in …

Does Internalized Weight Bias Affect Reported Physical Activity In Adolescents?, Caroline Simmons, Brennen Till, Chad Jensen, Monica Martinez Sep 2024

Does Internalized Weight Bias Affect Reported Physical Activity In Adolescents?, Caroline Simmons, Brennen Till, Chad Jensen, Monica Martinez

FHSS Mentored Research Conference

Background: Negative internalized weight bias is associated with poorer mental health, while physical activity (PA) has been shown to have protective mental health benefits. Previous research with teens has not explored whether weight bias predicts PA participation. We evaluated weight bias internalization as a predictor of total minutes of PA, hypothesizing that greater weight bias would predict less PA participation.

Methods: One hundred participants ranging (14-18 years) have completed the study. Participants completed the Weight Bias Internalization Scale (WBIS) and the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Adolescents (PAQ-A). Linear regression analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between scores …

Settling Of Two Rigidly Connected Spheres, Z. Maches, Morgane Houssais Sep 2024

Settling Of Two Rigidly Connected Spheres, Z. Maches, Morgane Houssais

Physics

Laboratory experiments and particle-resolved simulations are employed to investigate the settling dynamics of a pair of rigidly connected spherical particles of unequal size. They yield a detailed picture of the transient evolution and the terminal values of the aggregate's orientation angle and its settling and drift velocities as functions of the aspect ratio and the Galileo number, which denotes the ratio of buoyancy and viscous forces acting on the aggregate. At low to moderate values of, the aggregate's orientation and velocity converge to their terminal values monotonically, whereas for higher -values the aggregate tends to undergo a more complex motion. …

Contacts Between Police And The Public, Brad Myrstol, Troy Payne, Andrew Gonzalez

AJiC Alaska Police-Public Contact Survey

The Alaska Justice Information Center (AJiC) administered the Alaska Police—Public Contact Survey (PPCS) from May 1, 2022 through September 30, 2022. The primary aims of the PPCS were to develop an Alaska-specific estimate of adult Alaskans who came into contact with police in the preceding 12 months, to describe the nature and outcomes of police—public encounters, and to assess the attitudes and perceptions of adult Alaskans as they pertain to police. The Alaska PPCS survey instrument was developed using modified versions of survey questions included in the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics’ Police-Public Contact Survey, which is …

A Bird’S Eye View Of Crime: Assessing The Effectiveness Of Mobile Watchtowers On Vehicle-Related Thefts, James D. Kelsay, Ian A. Silver, Jaya B. Davis, Brook Rollins

Open Initiatives Grant Funded Publications-Archive

Objective Recent reports suggest that thefts of vehicles and thefts from vehicles have increased significantly over the last several years. Some police agencies have turned to mobile surveillance watchtowers to address this problem. This study examines the effectiveness of these mobile watchtowers at reducing vehicle-related thefts in Arlington, Texas.

Methods An interrupted time series analysis is used to determine whether the use of mobile watchtowers reduces the frequency of vehicle-related thefts.

Results The watchtowers are associated with a small, but significant, decrease in vehicle-related thefts. However, this effect appears to decay over time.

Conclusion Mobile watchtowers may be a viable …

Boeing Ruling Is A Cautionary Tale For Trade Secret Litigants, Matthew D'Amore Sep 2024

Boeing Ruling Is A Cautionary Tale For Trade Secret Litigants, Matthew D'Amore

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

On Aug. 14, a $72 million jury trial win by Zunum Aero Inc. against The Boeing Co. in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington for trade secret misappropriation evaporated with the court's post-trial holding that Zunum had failed to identify its trade secrets sufficiently.

How did we get here after three years of litigation, eight days of trial and countless dollars spent? How can litigants — and courts — avoid this situation in the future?

Clear pretrial identification of trade secrets is key, and litigants can find a road map for this in the Sedona Conference's …
