40-Gene Expression Profile Test Predicting Metastatic Risk In Localized, High-Risk Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma For Peer Review, Luna Samman, Chloe Fernandez, Carlos Gomez-Meade

GME Publications

This case study investigates the use of a 40-gene expression profile to independently predict the risk of metastasis in an immunocompromised 75-year-old male patient with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of his left cheek. The patient's previous medical history included non-melanoma skin cancer. Traditional staging methods, such as those from the American Joint Committee on Cancer 8th edition and Brigham and Women's Hospital, suggested a high risk of metastasis for this patient. However, the 40-gene expression profile test identified the patient as having a low risk (Class 1 result) of metastasis within 3 years. The patient successfully underwent Mohs surgery, and …

Spahr praises McKenzie’s writing on Afghanistan, in particular, calling it “the best [description] I have read of the strategic events that led to that dramatic end.” Spahr presents a compelling case for why the book “should be required reading at senior levels of professional military education.”

Reviewed by Reverend Dr. Wylie W. Johnson, Chaplain (US Army, retired), US Army War College class of 2010

Dr. Wylie Johnson provides a thoughtful review of Rhodes Scholar Josiah Bunting’s new book on the early life and career of General George Marshall. As Johnson notes, there are many books about Marshall, and Johnson highlights the value of Bunting’s book, which contextualizes Marshall’s early career—from experience as a staff officer (rather than leading troops in combat), to having authority in overseas assignments, to recreation. Johnson notes that “Marshall had a different military career than that which is usually lauded today.” He …

Parameters Bookshelf – Online Book Reviews

Author: Adam Wunische

Reviewed by Dr. Erik Goepner, US government analyst, Colonel (US Air Force, retired)

Dr. Erik Goepner reviews analyst Adam Wunische’s Unwinnable Wars, which, according to Gopener, offers a “timeless reminder—American power has limits.” Goepner provides a helpful outline of Wunische’s four “major preexisting conditions that severely limit the success of armed state-building efforts.” Wunische argues that preexisting conditions are “beyond the control of the intervening power” and “often foreordain the failure of such missions” (such as Afghanistan, the book’s main case study).

Perspectives On Quality-Of-Life Changes Experienced By Mental Health Court Participants, Kathy Joan Edwards Sep 2024

Perspectives On Quality-Of-Life Changes Experienced By Mental Health Court Participants, Kathy Joan Edwards

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The association between mental health court participation and a reduction in recidivism is well documented. The question of whether mental health courts meet their therapeutic goals has received little scholarly attention. Therapeutic outcomes for mental health court participants are not well understood. Quality-of-life changes are a therapeutic outcome for mental health court participants. The purpose of this study was to explore factors related to such changes. The conceptual framework was based on therapeutic jurisprudence and criminogenic risk theory as implemented through the risk-need responsivity model. Quality-of-life changes as experienced and reported by 13 mental health court participants were qualitatively examined …

Strategies Small-To-Medium Sized Family Businesses Leaders Use To Expand Beyond Domestic Markets, Suresh Lakshmikanthan

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Most of India's small to mid-sized enterprises (SMEs) are family-owned. These businesses are crucial to the economy and contribute significantly to a nation’s gross domestic product. However, the pharmaceutical and dietary supplement subsector of family-owned SMEs faces challenges in expanding due to limitations in global competencies, skills, and financial resources. Grounded in a composite dynamic capability theory and resource-based view conceptual framework, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to identify and explore successful international expansion strategies used by family-owned SME Indian pharmaceutical and nutraceutical companies. The participants included six SME Indian CEOs and owners in India who …

African American Baptist Pastors' Experience Counseling Congregants With Emotional Distress In The Role Of Mental Health Providers, Patricia W. Brown-Irby

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The rise of emotional distress and other mental health issues in the church is a significant concern. African American congregants depend more on their pastors to assist them with issues such as emotional distress, stress, finances, and marital discord. As an essential institution in the community, the church represents the ideal setting to address many of the issues experienced by congregants. Role theory was used as the theoretical framework, as roles often entail particular risks and benefits that can differ depending on human traits, historical periods, and cultural settings. The methodology was qualitative, interpretative phenomenology; interviews were conducted with African …

Leadership Strategies For Reducing Unethical Practices By Organizational Leaders In The United States Foodservice Industry, John Badu Anang

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Public confidence in organizational leadership is dwindling due to recurring scandals within large corporations. Despite recent ethical failures, many organizations have yet to implement effective strategies to foster ethical leadership and transform their corporate cultures. Lack of ethical leadership is particularly concerning in vital sectors such as the foodservice industry, where unethical leadership can harm consumers and the environment. An exploratory multiple-case study design was used to examine what leadership strategies some organizational leaders in the U.S. foodservice industry could use to reduce unethical practices. Participants were adults with managerial or supervisory roles in the U.S. foodservice industry for at …

Recording and analysis of neural activity are often biased toward detecting sparse subsets of highly active neurons, masking important signals carried in low-magnitude and variable responses. To investigate the contribution of seemingly noisy activity to odor encoding, we used mesoscale calcium imaging from mice of both sexes to record odor responses from the dorsal surface of bilateral olfactory bulbs (OBs). The outer layer of the mouse OB is comprised of dendrites organized into discrete "glomeruli," which are defined by odor receptor-specific sensory neuron input. We extracted activity from a large population of glomeruli and used logistic regression to classify odors …

Enhancing Resilience And Reducing Waste In Food Supply Chains: A Systematic Review And Future Directions Leveraging Emerging Technologies, Asmaa Seyam, May Ei Barachi, Cheng Zhang, Bo Du, Jun Shen, Sujith Samuel Mathew

All Works

The sustainability of food supply chains is gaining increasing attention, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic. A food supply system that simultaneously prioritises resilience and minimises wastage is crucial. It is found that many studies have explored reducing food waste and increasing supply chain resilience as separate objectives, but research is scarce investigating both objectives in conjunction. This paper presents a comprehensive systematic review focusing on existing solutions to reducing food waste and enhancing resilience. It discusses future directions, particularly leveraging emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things, blockchain, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. The studies are categorised into three …
