Exploring Depictions Of Mental Health In Popular Hindi-Urdu Cinema, Sara Ahmed

Journal of Critical Global Issues

Hindi-Urdu popular cinema, commonly referred to as Bollywood, largely reflects the evolution of various social attitudes in the Indian subcontinent. In order to better understand these films’ depiction of social attitudes surrounding mental illness and the implications for its treatment, this study creates and analyzes an anthology of Hindi-Urdu movies from the 1940’s to the present that portray some aspect of mental illness. These movies that depict mental illness were grouped into the various aspects of stigma that they portrayed: structural stigma, courtesy stigma, health practitioner stigma, self-stigma, and public stigma. I extracted and analyzed the attitudes towards mental illness, …

Journal of Maine Medical Center

Problem: Postoperative complications after cardiac surgery significantly impact both the short-term and long-term survival of patients. Cardiovascular diseases are a major health concern, accounting for 12% of health expenditures in the United States. A substantial number of patients with cardiovascular disease undergo invasive procedures, including cardiac surgery, and the incidence of postoperative complications is notable. This information underscores the need to effectively prevent postoperative adverse events to improve outcomes, reduce morbidity, shorten hospital stays, and lower health care costs.

Approach: The Healthcare Enabled by Artificial Intelligence in Real Time (HEART) project is a collaborative effort involving clinicians from MaineHealth, industry …

Intrinsic And Environmental Drivers Of Pairwise Cohesion In Wild Canis Social Groups, John F. Benson Sep 2024

Intrinsic And Environmental Drivers Of Pairwise Cohesion In Wild Canis Social Groups, John F. Benson

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Animals within social groups respond to costs and benefits of sociality by adjusting the proportion of time they spend in close proximity to other individuals in the group (cohesion). Variation in cohesion between individuals, in turn, shapes important group-level processes such as subgroup formation and fission–fusion dynamics. Although critical to animal sociality, a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing cohesion remains a gap in our knowledge of cooperative behavior in animals. We tracked 574 individuals from six species within the genus Canis in 15 countries on four continents with GPS telemetry to estimate the time that pairs of individuals within …

Dynamic Localization Of Endoplasmic Reticulum During Tetrahymena Conjugation, Guerrier Sabrice, Michael Patterson, Kaitlin Crofton, Michael Tucker, Shyhiem Walker Sep 2024

Dynamic Localization Of Endoplasmic Reticulum During Tetrahymena Conjugation, Guerrier Sabrice, Michael Patterson, Kaitlin Crofton, Michael Tucker, Shyhiem Walker

Faculty Publications

Changes in lipid composition at membrane fusion sites in mating Tetrahymena are thought to involve the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), but its localization to these sites has not been observed. Here we show ER distribution during Tetrahymena mating using TtRET1-GFP and GFP-KDEL. We find that both markers localize to perinuclear membranes and tubular structures that connect perinuclear membrane to plasma membrane at fusion sites. Interestingly, both markers disappear from parental macronuclei after emergence of zygotic macronuclei. These similarities in localization of established ER marker, GFP-KDEL, and TtRET1-GFP reveal TtRET1-GFP as a useful new live cell marker for the ER in Tetrahymena.

Jonnalagadda, Tulin Budak-Alpdogan, Manoj K Pandey

Cooper Medical School of Rowan University Departmental Research

Despite a record number of clinical studies investigating various anti-myeloma treatments, the 5-year survival rate for multiple myeloma (MM) patients in the US is only 55%, and almost all patients relapse. Poor patient outcomes demonstrate that myeloma cells are "born to survive" which means they can adapt and evolve following treatment. Thus, new therapeutic approaches to combat survival mechanisms and target treatment resistance are required. Importantly, Mcl-1, anti-apoptotic protein, is required for the development of MM and treatment resistance. This study looks at the possibility of KS18, a selective Mcl-1 inhibitor, to treat MM and overcome resistance. Our investigation demonstrates …

Personal Social Responsibility In Ecological Citizenship: Dimensionality And Scale Measurement With Aiken Index Analysis, Annisa Istiqomah, Mukhammad Murdiono, Mami Hajaroh

Jurnal Civics: Media Kajian Kewarganegaraan

Personal social responsibility emphasises the importance of positively benefiting society, including the environment. Responsibility is one of the values influencing ecological citizenship so that individuals can prioritise environmental issues and realise the importance of sustainable living. This research aims to develop an instrument for personal social responsibility in ecological citizenship as a measurement scale. The instrument’s contents are validated by experts (expert judgment), and the test is then performed using the Aiken-V formula. The research results show that: 1) The dimensions of personal social responsibility in ecological citizenship are determined by indicators, namely a) Have an interest in considering environmental …
