We describe a new species of miniaturized gecko (genus Pseudogonatodes) from the Peninsula de Paria in northeastern Venezuela. Externally, the new species resembles Pseudogonatodes furvus and Pseudogonatodes manessi, from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia and the Central Coastal Range in Venezuela, respectively; however, it differs from these species in terms of molecular genetic data (12S rRNA, 16S rRNA, and c-mos), osteological characters, and scale counts. The new species is unique in skull osteology, and we adopt the term ‘telescoped’ from the literature to describe the overlap of bones in the snout, in particular the …

The Dallas Donation After Circulatory Death Transplantation Summit: Expanding Donation After Circulatory Death Procedures Through Process Improvement, Broader Utilization, And Innovation, Michele Finotti, William C. Chapman, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Despite a significant increase in utilization over the past decade, the number of donation after circulatory death (DCD) organs that are procured and transplanted in the United States (US) remains well below its potential. There is still room for expansion, as utilizing DCD organs to the fullest extent is currently the most viable solution to the persistent mismatch between supply and demand in transplantation. We convened a multidisciplinary transplantation summit to examine various aspects of DCD, with faculty members from around the world with clinical and academic interest in DCD donation and transplantation, including abdominal and cardiothoracic surgeons, organ procurement …

IMPORTANCE: Perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis (PAP) reduces the incidence of surgical site infections (SSIs). Guidelines recommend 24 hours or less of PAP for cystectomy with urinary diversion; however, evidence specifying optimal PAP duration for this surgery is lacking, and prolonged administration of PAP is common practice.

OBJECTIVE: To establish noninferiority of 24-hour PAP vs extended-duration PAP in preventing SSIs within 90 days after cystectomy with urinary diversion.

DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This single-center, noninferiority randomized clinical trial was performed from April 18, 2018, to August 18, 2022, in patients aged older than 18 years undergoing elective open cystectomy with urinary diversion. …

BACKGROUND: Respiratory viral infections are common and are a major cause of morbidity and mortality. We evaluated the impact of universal masking implemented during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on other healthcare-associated respiratory viral infections (HA-RIs) in an academic medical center.

METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed among all inpatients aged ≥18 years admitted between 1 May 2019 and 30 June 2022. Universal masking was implemented in May 2020 at our hospital and state-level mask mandates had been lifted by May 2021. We evaluated and compared the HA-RI rates, adjusted for monthly community-onset viral infections, during the premasking …

Evaluating The Interaction Between Hemorrhagic Transformation And Cerebral Edema On Functional Outcome After Ischemic Stroke, Amrit Avula, Quoc Bui, Atul Kumar, Yasheng Chen, Ali Hamzehloo, Julien Cifarelli, Laura Heitsch, Agnieszka Slowik, Daniel Strbian, Jin-Moo Lee, Rajat Dhar Oct 2024

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Hemorrhagic transformation (HT) and cerebral edema (CED) are both major complications following ischemic stroke, but few studies have evaluated their overlap. We evaluated the frequency and predictors of CED/HT overlap and whether their co-occurrence impacts functional outcome more than each in isolation.

METHODS: 892 stroke patients enrolled in a prospective study had follow-up CT imaging evaluated for HT and CED; the latter was quantified using the ratio of hemispheric CSF volumes (with hemispheric CSF ratio < 0.90 used as the CED threshold). The interaction between HT and CED on functional outcome (using modified Rankin Scale at 3 months) was compared to that for each condition separately.

RESULTS: Among the 275 (31%) who developed HT, 233 (85%) manifested hemispheric CSF ratio < 0.9 (CED/HT), with this overlap group representing half of the 475 with measurable CED. Higher baseline NIHSS scores and larger infarct volumes were observed in the CED/HT group compared with those with CED or HT alone. Functional outcome was worse in those with CED/HT [median mRS 3 (IQR 2-5)] than those with CED [median 2 (IQR 1-4)] or HT alone [median 1 (IQR 0-2), p < 0.0001]. Overlap of CED/HT independently predicted worse outcome [OR 1.89 (95% CI: 1.12-3.18), p = 0.02] while HT did not; however, CED/HT was no longer associated with worse outcome after adjusting for severity of CED [adjusted OR 0.35 (95% CI: 0.23, 0.51) per 0.21 lower hemispheric CSF ratio, p < 0.001].

CONCLUSIONS: Most stroke patients with HT also have measurable CED. …

As any discipline matures, its research communities reflect on the epistemological foundations that support their research and discuss how the discipline can, and should, progress. This type of introspection is typically observed in the natural sciences, where researchers question the nature of their fields, the standards of rigor applied, and the impact of their work. As researchers in conceptual modeling, we should continually reflect on, and discuss, the theories and practice of conceptual modeling to ensure its ongoing relevance and consistency with the advancements in information technologies.

A Quadriocellar Hedychridium Caeruleum (Hymenoptera: Chrysididae) From Manitoba, Canada, Kira Peters, Jason Gibbs

The Great Lakes Entomologist

A specimen of Hedychridium caeruleum (Norton) with four ocelli was discovered in Manitoba, Canada. The supernumerary ocellus is located to the right of the ocellar triangle, which otherwise appears normal. This is the first report of an ocellar or ocular teratology within Chrysididae, adding to the small body of literature currently available on supernumerary ocelli within Hymenoptera. This is the first published record of H. caeruleum in Canada.
