Polycaprolactone-Based Shape Memory Foams As Self-Fitting Vaginal Stents, Kailey Wilson, Varsha Kotamreddy, Trace Larue, Arian Veyssi, Felipe Beltran, Julie Hakim, Manuel K Rausch, Melissa Grunlan, Elizabeth Cosgriff-Hernandez

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

There is an urgent critical need for a patient-forward vaginal stent that can prevent debilitating vaginal stenosis that occurs after pelvic radiation treatments and vaginal reconstruction. To this end, we developed a self-fitting vaginal stent based on a shape-memory polymer (SMP) foam that can assume a secondary, compressed shape for ease of deployment. Upon insertion, the change in temperature and hydration initiates foam expansion to shape fit to the individual patient and restore the lumen of the stent to allow egress of vaginal secretions. To achieve rapid actuation at physiological temperature, we investigated the effect of architecture of two photocurable, …

The New Professional: Debt Repayment Strategies: What New Dentists Should Know, Amrita Patel Dds

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

Dentists face significant financial challenges due to educational and practice-related loans. Effective debt repayment strategies are essential for financial stability and long-term success. Dentists should prioritize high-interest debts and explore consolidation or refinancing options to simplify debt management and reduce interest costs. Popular repayment methods include the "snowball" and "avalanche" methods, focusing on either debt balances or interest rates. Income-driven repayment plans for federal educational loans offer flexibility and potential forgiveness. Financial literacy, budgeting, emergency funds, and professional advice are key to successful debt management.

Exploring Culturally Relevant School Leadership Practices: An Autoethnographic Study, Kezia Myers

Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this autoethnographic study was on the implementation and impact of Culturally Responsive School Leadership (CRSL) within an elementary school. The school is comprised of approximately 400 P-5 students, with a predominantly Black student body (77%), along with students who identify as Hispanic, multiracial, White, and other ethnic backgrounds.

Three research questions were posed: 1) In what ways have I, as a school principal, integrated culturally relevant leadership practices into the decision-making framework at the school? 2) How might what I learn about other principals’ implementation of CRP in their respective schools inform my understanding of its effectiveness …

Leveling Up The Power Of Voice: The Impact Of Gamification On Speaking Participation Of Multilingual Learners In The Cybersecurity Classroom, Philip Peavy

Theses and Dissertations

The United States has a growing number of multilingual learners in its classrooms, but many schools are not prepared to support these students, especially in computer science education. There is a shortage of qualified teachers and few resources available in languages other than English. As a result, many multilingual learners are not actively participating in their computer science classes. This is a problem because computer science is a growing field with many opportunities for employment. One way to support multilingual learners in computer science education is through gamification. Gamification is the use of game-design elements and principles in non-game contexts. …

Music Production And Girls: A Phenomenological Study Of The High School Music Technology Classroom, Mary Angel Cleary

Theses and Dissertations

Female representation in public spheres and organizations is a continuing topic in American research. Females have historically been left out of all aspects of computer technology and the technical sides of the music industry. In upper echelons of music making, from composition to production, they remain vastly under-represented. People begin forming ideas about who they are, their abilities, and their future career interests in high school, especially in elective courses like music technology that are geared towards allowing students to explore their creative skill sets to determine if these elective experiences are something for which they have a life-long passion. …

Popular Justice Or Populist Justice? Penal Populism And Its Impact On Democracy, Kuan-Wu Chen Oct 2024

Popular Justice Or Populist Justice? Penal Populism And Its Impact On Democracy, Kuan-Wu Chen

Theses and Dissertations

Populism, a pervasive phenomenon in contemporary politics, manifests as an anti-establishment, anti-pluralistic, morally charged framing that advocates for direct rule between leader and populace. Among its variants, penal populism emerges as a particularly concerning manifestation. It is characterized by a leader's deployment of panicking, punitive, and politically targeted rhetoric to enhance social control and accrue political capital rather than address crime prevention. This research argues that penal populism poses the most significant threat to democratic rule, as evidenced by theoretical, framing, and mobilization analyses. A novel categorization of populist variants is proposed based on dimensions of social categorization and exclusivity. …

Rethinking Democratic Backsliding: Events, Regimes, And Instituitonal Structures, Kelsey Martin-Morales Oct 2024

Rethinking Democratic Backsliding: Events, Regimes, And Instituitonal Structures, Kelsey Martin-Morales

Topics In Beyond The Standard Model Physics, Sapan Karki Oct 2024

Topics In Beyond The Standard Model Physics, Sapan Karki

Theses and Dissertations

Standard Model and General relativity are two pillars of modern physics, and their reconciliation would bring a long-sought harmony in physics along with insights into the secrets of the universe. It is then natural to try and modify these theories by searching for the fundamental symmetry describing our world. In this work, I work on the implication of breaking of Lorentz symmetry and the existence of topological objects called solitons. In chapter 3, I show how a cosmologically generated Lorentz- Violating model has instability issues. I then show how the quantum corrections on Lorentz-Violating models can produce ambiguity in β-function …

The State Math Assessment, I-Ready Diagnostic, And The State Accountability Plan: Is This An Assessment System To Support Learning For All Students?, Beverly Quinn

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the relationship between a state high-stakes summative mathematics assessment and an interim third-party math diagnostic assessment and data literacy among teachers in a Southeastern school district. Despite ongoing federal and state accountability efforts, the gap between policy intentions and student achievement continues to grow. In this quantitative correlational study, the relationship between the Spring 2023 state summative and interim assessment data for fourth and eighth-grade students was examined. Additionally, the Teacher Data Usage Survey (TDUS) responses were analyzed to examine how teachers utilize assessment data in instructional practices. Data were reported as percentages of responses per category …

Winning And Losing At The Federal District Courts, Madison Shanks Oct 2024

Winning And Losing At The Federal District Courts, Madison Shanks

Theses and Dissertations

The federal criminal courts are unique compared to the rest of the justice system. Cases in these courts pit a government backed prosecutor with an informational and first-moving advantage, against an often-disadvantaged defendant in an adversarial system that ultimately determines who wins and who loses. This asymmetry in criminal cases at the federal district courts presents a situation in which we can understand how courtroom actors matter for the justice process, and specifically if and how attorneys’ strategies differ and ultimately influence outcomes for their clients. This dissertation project builds on an existing data collection project that captures motion filings …
