The History Of The Tennessee Earth Science Teachers (Test), Michael A. Gibson
The History Of The Tennessee Earth Science Teachers (Test), Michael A. Gibson
The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon
Tennessee Earth Science Teachers (TEST) was founded in 1990 to promote awareness of the need to integrate Earth science and geology education into the secondary school curricula of Tennessee and to ensure that Tennessee students received the curricular and instructional benefits of Earth Systems education. That mission expanded to include all K-12 grades and to infusing Earth science into other disciplines. A legacy of the participants from a 1991 Tittle II geology workshop for Tennessee teachers, TEST was instrumental in designing and providing academic and pedagogical training, disseminating educational materials, and with networking K-12 teachers with higher education geoscience educators …

The Journey Into Inquiry Land In Tennessee: How To Get There From Anywhere? Lessons Learned Over 25 Years, Michael A. Gibson, Don W. Byerly Jr
The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon
Driven by changes in the National Standards during the 1990s, inquiry became the pedagogical methodology of choice for K-12 sciences as a major paradigm shift. Inquiry was chosen because it realistically and accurately modeled how scientists conduct scientific studies. Scientific inquiry is itself a learning process, and early educational research suggested that students learned more efficiently through inquiry. However, inquiry was a difficult pedagogy for teachers to learn and for students to experience, as it appears chaotic and decentralized. K-12 Earth science in Tennessee was in need of revitalization, in terms of shifting to the new Earth systems curriculum and …

Tanzania Journal of Science
Globally, multiple ecosystem services are increasingly becoming an important agenda in sustainable forest management. However, it is still unclear which forest management practices would lead to an optimal bundle of ecosystem services promoting sustainability. This study aimed to determine whether implementing thinning schedule and 30 years rotation age has implications on the provision of ecosystem services and economic benefits of Teak stands in Tanzania. Carbon quantification and cost-benefit analysis methods were used to study the climatic and economic benefits of wood production and carbon sequestration under five scenarios where three thinning schedules and 30 years rotation age were the baseline. …
The Use Of Developmental Program Evaluation For State Continued Approval In Educator Preparation, Suzanne L. Roberts
The Use Of Developmental Program Evaluation For State Continued Approval In Educator Preparation, Suzanne L. Roberts
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Working as a teacher educator today means working under an ever-present regulatory gaze. Accountability mechanisms, including state program approval processes, have been layered resulting in complexity. External assessments have failed to provide the data needed to support continuous improvement. There have been calls for combining external and internal evaluation processes to better drive continuous improvement. Developmental Program Evaluation (DPE) is an approach that claims to support program development in the middle space between top-down and bottom-up forces. This study examines the use of DPE in the middle space between mandated state approval processes and a small educator preparation program’s effort …

Objective. To investigate the feasibility of delivering multidimensional feedback using a single channel of peripheral nerve stimulation by complementing intensity percepts with flutter frequency percepts controlled by burst period modulation. Approach. Two dimensions of a distally referred sensation were provided simultaneously: intensity was conveyed by the modulation of the pulse charge rate inside short discrete periods of stimulation referred to as bursts and frequency was conveyed by the modulation of the period between bursts. For this approach to be feasible, intensity percepts must be perceived independently of frequency percepts. Two experiments investigated these interactions. A series of two alternative forced …

On Application Of A Surrogate Model To Numerical Evaluation Of Effective Elastic Properties Of Composites With 3d Rotationally Symmetric Particles, Pascal Alexander Happ, Igor Tsukrov, Romana Piat
Faculty Publications
Micromechanical modelling of particulate composites with non-ellipsoidal particle shapes presents significant challenges because analytical approaches based on the fundamental results of Eshelby cannot be used. On the other side, direct numerical evaluations by finite element analysis can involve high computational cost in the case when particle features have small radius of curvature, sharp edges and require extremely fine meshes. This paper proposes substituting the exact particle shape with a surrogate model producing approximately the same contribution to the effective elastic moduli. We illustrate our approach by considering rotationally symmetric 3D particle shapes with the external surface defined by the Laplace's …

Examining The Effects Of Externally Mounted Biologgers On At-Sea Behavior And Reproductive Success In Adult Female Northern Elephant Seals, Mirounga Angustirostris, Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Kali N. Prescott
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Over the past five decades, biologgers have been used to study animal behavior, physiology, and ecology. Externally mounted biologgers may have unforeseen effects on behavior, habitat use, foraging success, and reproductive success. Although guidelines exist for the recommended mass of biologgers on terrestrial animals, these guidelines are inappropriate for marine animals, which are more affected by buoyancy and drag. However, drag is difficult to measure directly necessitating the use of proxies based on physical characteristics of biologgers like frontal area. Northern elephant seals are a model species for studying the impacts of biologgers due to an existing long-term dataset collected …

Population Genetic Analysis Informs Dispersal Capacity In Representative Marine Trematodes From Family Microscaphidiidae And Family Paramphistomatidae, Randi Leigh Barton
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
In marine and terrestrial systems, life history drives the distribution of organisms and informs the spatial scale of population connectivity. Nearly all bony reef fishes and invertebrates have a bipartite life cycle with a planktonic larval stage, which increases the organism’s dispersal capacity, and concludes with a relatively non-dispersive adult phase. While many studies have identified the relevant spatial scale for studying population structure in fishes and invertebrates, few have done the same for parasitic taxa, which have even more complex life histories with a higher diversity in the range of dispersal strategies they use. Parasite taxa differ in (1) …

Showing What They Know: How Supervisors Express Their Assessment Literacy, Erin Riley-Lepo, Nicole Barnes, Helenrose Fives
Department of Educational Foundations Scholarship and Creative Works
This study examines the assessment literacy of university-based student teaching supervisors in a teacher education program. The first author engaged in an inquiry community with three supervisors from the program. Using the four dimensions of the Approaches to Classroom Assessment Inventory (ACAI) framework, we sought to expose the specific phenomena of supervisors’ articulation of the ACAI dimensions of assessment literacy. We organized our findings around the dimensions: assessment process, assessment product, assessment fairness, and assessment theory. We found that supervisors expressed multiple dimensions of assessment within their inquiry community meeting discussions and interviews and expressed varied knowledge and prioritization of …

The Rights And Obligations Of Mod Creators In Canadian Videogame Law, Christian Clavette
Canadian Journal of Law and Technology
This article explores the legal landscape for mod creators in the Canadian video game industry, examining their rights and obligations under Canadian copyright law and End User License Agreements (EULAs). With the growth of the industry, independent creators have increasingly contributed to game development through “mods,” which modify or enhance existing games. While these mods offer significant creative and commercial potential, they also pose legal challenges, particularly regarding copyright infringement and the enforceability of EULAs. The article evaluates relevant Canadian and U.S. case law, highlighting key differences and similarities, and discusses how these legal principles apply to mods. It also …

Introduction
The United States has the highest teen pregnancy rate and sexually transmitted infection rates among developed countries. One common approach that has been implemented to reduce these rates is abstinence-only-until-marriage programs that advocate for delaying sexual intercourse until marriage. These programs focus on changing adolescents' beliefs toward abstinence until marriage; however, it is unclear whether adolescents' beliefs about abstinence predict their sexual behavior, including sexual risk behavior (SRB). An alternative approach may be encouraging youth to delay their sexual debut until they reach the age of maturity, but not necessarily until marriage.

Data protection has become one of the top issues despite major advancements in communications and technology. For web-based technology to send data quickly and safely, the data must be encrypted. Encryption is the process of turning plain text into ciphred text, which bad people can't read or change. Both the cryptanalysis and decryption procedures required a large amount of time in order to maintain the requisite level of security. However, a number of researchers developed the cryptography approach in parallel in order to reduce the amount of time needed for the encryption and decryption procedures to be finished. The investigation …

Unraveling Grief: Historical Mourning Wear And Modern Reinterpretations, Sharon Caitlin Carpenter
Theses
Sharon Carpenter's thesis, "Unraveling Grief: Historical Mourning Wear and Modern Reinterpretations," explores the evolution of mourning fashion from ancient times to modern reinterpretations. Carpenter examines how mourning attire has historically reflected cultural attitudes toward death and grief, serving both personal and societal functions. The thesis traces mourning practices across civilizations, beginning with ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, where clothing symbolized beliefs in purity and the afterlife. It moves through the Middle Ages and the Victorian era, where mourning wear became heavily ritualized, particularly influenced by Queen Victoria’s deep grief for Prince Albert. This formalization of mourning attire impacted social norms and …
