Dignifying Queerness, Ryan Thoreson Oct 2024

Dignifying Queerness, Ryan Thoreson

Cardozo Law Review

In recent years, courts that have affirmed the right of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people to engage in same-sex activity have often invoked the value of dignity. They have done so in spite of the fact that same-sex activity, and many other kinds of sex, have historically been deemed undignified and subject to criminal prohibition. This Article examines a rapidly growing body of comparative jurisprudence to examine how dignity has become an unlikely cornerstone of efforts to decriminalize same-sex conduct. By invoking dignity, courts have persuasively struck down some of the most immediate and egregious restrictions on sexual …

Identification Of Inflammatory Factors Contributing To Foaming In Atherosclerosis, Kavya Podila Oct 2024

Identification Of Inflammatory Factors Contributing To Foaming In Atherosclerosis, Kavya Podila

Holster Scholar Projects

According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), atherosclerosis is attributed to the majority of cardiovascular disease (CVD) cases and is the leading cause of mortality in the US and worldwide. Despite significant medical advancements, the risk of cardiovascular events remains, warranting further mechanistic and pathogenic investigation. Advances in high-resolution omics profiling and the development of novel data-analytic bioinformatic tools previously enabled the novel discovery of two distinct programs in foaming, the central process in atherogenesis. The programs are pathogenic and homeostatic foaming, with the pathogenic foaming program being positively associated with disease. Using single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data from …

Bridging The False Certification Gap: Why “Resulting From” In The 2010 Aks Amendment Requires But-For Causation, Alexandra Wildman Oct 2024

Bridging The False Certification Gap: Why “Resulting From” In The 2010 Aks Amendment Requires But-For Causation, Alexandra Wildman

Fordham Law Review

Before 2010, violators of the Anti-Kickback Statute (AKS) could avoid False Claims Act (FCA) liability if claims for items or services borne of their kickback scheme were submitted to federal healthcare programs by a third party. In 2010, as part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Congress attempted to close this loophole in the FCA by amending the AKS. Under the amendment’s terms, claims submitted to federal healthcare programs for items or services “resulting from” an AKS scheme are false for the purposes of establishing FCA liability, regardless of who submitted the claims.

Although the amendment widened the FCA liability …

Taking The Law Into Their (Virtual) Hands: Facebook And Digital Vigilantism, Christine Anne R. Cox Oct 2024

Taking The Law Into Their (Virtual) Hands: Facebook And Digital Vigilantism, Christine Anne R. Cox

Department of Communication Faculty Publications

Digital vigilantism is an emerging phenomenon whereby netizens engage in forms of targeted surveillance, naming and shaming through new media, supposedly for social justice ends. The multi-layered case of Christine Dacera, the Filipina flight attendant who was found dead on New Years Day 2021, is one such case that warrants the critical investigation of the role of Facebook in vigilant behaviors of Filipino users. Using netnographic data and an affordances approach, this study asks the following: What are the dominant affordances associated with the use of Facebook for digital vigilantism, and how does surveillance enable the new normal of community …

Detection Of Seismic Microwave Radiation Anomalies In Snow-Covered Mountainous Terrain: Insights From Two Recent Earthquakes In The Pamir–Tien Shan Region, Feng Jing, Meng Jiang, Ramesh P. Singh Oct 2024

Detection Of Seismic Microwave Radiation Anomalies In Snow-Covered Mountainous Terrain: Insights From Two Recent Earthquakes In The Pamir–Tien Shan Region, Feng Jing, Meng Jiang, Ramesh P. Singh

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

When earthquakes occur in high-mountain areas during the winter season, the epicentral region is often covered by a snow layer, which can be either thin or thick. The presence of snow and/or ice layers affects the detection of thermal anomalies associated with seismic signals. Taking into account the penetration capabilities of microwaves, microwave brightness temperature data were analyzed by using the index of microwave radiation anomaly to study the response of the epicentral region associated with two recent strong earthquakes in Central Asia, which occurred in snow-covered mountainous areas. Increased microwave radiation was observed within one week prior to the …

Can Ai Bridge The Aisle? Decoding The 118th Congress Through Artificial Intelligence Legislation, Fiona Hendryx, Katherine Elkins Oct 2024

Can Ai Bridge The Aisle? Decoding The 118th Congress Through Artificial Intelligence Legislation, Fiona Hendryx, Katherine Elkins

IPHS 200: Programming Humanity

The rise of AI’s influence in American life has concerned both the public and the United States Congress. Focusing on the 118th Congress, I identified 365 proposed AI-related bills, only four of which (1.09%) were ultimately passed. Using a combination of natural language processing, topic modeling, and data analysis tools, I investigated why, despite broad bipartisan public and Congressional support, Congress did not pass more AI-related legislation. Amidst shrinking party majority margins and rising polarization among the electorate and elites, the success of AI-related legislative action relies less on popularity and more on party affiliation and control.

Do Autism Diagnostic Narratives Have A Shape? Using Sentiment Analysis To Evaluate Autism Late Diagnosis Narratives And Ai’S Attitude Towards Disability-Related Keywords, Nava Bahrampour, Katherine Elkins, Jon Chun Oct 2024

Do Autism Diagnostic Narratives Have A Shape? Using Sentiment Analysis To Evaluate Autism Late Diagnosis Narratives And Ai’S Attitude Towards Disability-Related Keywords, Nava Bahrampour, Katherine Elkins, Jon Chun

IPHS 200: Programming Humanity

Do autism diagnostic self-narratives have something in common? The meaning of diagnostic labels is a culturally relevant topic in 2024, and I am curious to know if there are similarities in self-narratives about autism diagnosis. We are at an interesting moment in regards to our attitudes about autism and disability, where diagnostic labels like autism are usually viewed as either a tragedy or a relief. I wanted to look at three recent autism diagnostic self-narratives from late-diagnosed women to confirm or refute the existence of a specific type of “narrative” around diagnosis. I was additionally interested in how artificial intelligence …

Sentiment Analysis Of Harry Potter: Exploring Ai Versus Human Interpretation, Xander Newman, Katherine Elkins Oct 2024

Sentiment Analysis Of Harry Potter: Exploring Ai Versus Human Interpretation, Xander Newman, Katherine Elkins

IPHS 200: Programming Humanity

The project starts by examining whether a smaller window size of 5% allows the algorithm to determine cruxes and their sentiment more accurately than the standard 10% window size, using the passages identified by the crux report to assist me. I find that the smaller window size seems to be more accurate for the most part, but this is not always the case. Moreover, regardless of window size, the algorithm struggled with definitively assessing ambivalent sentiment, much like how a reader has their own interpretation of emotionally charged moments. Moreover, using the results of the 5% and 10% window size …

Journey To The West: A Sentiment Analysis Exploration, Ava Yu, Katherine Elkins Oct 2024

Journey To The West: A Sentiment Analysis Exploration, Ava Yu, Katherine Elkins

IPHS 200: Programming Humanity

Journey to the Westis one of the most influential literary works to come out of the East. Set in Tang-era China, the book is a religious allegory following a Buddhist monk and his supernatural disciples who make a pilgrimage from China to India. The chaptered format of the story lends itself to a very episodic approach to conflict & resolution in the story. The text also has a myriad of different influences; it heavily draws inspiration from Buddhist folklore, Confucianist tradition, and Daoist ideology, which were the reigning schools of thought in 16th-century imperial China(the time period in which this …
