Wildlife biodiversity is essential for healthy, resilient and sustainable ecosystems. For biologists, this diversity also represents a treasure trove of genetic, molecular and developmental mechanisms that deepen our understanding of the origins and rules of life. However, the rapid decline in biodiversity reported recently foreshadows a potentially catastrophic collapse of many important ecosystems and the associated irreversible loss of many forms of life on our planet. Immediate action by conservationists of all stripes is required to avert this disaster. In this Spotlight, we draw together insights and proposals discussed at a recent workshop hosted by Revive & Restore, which gathered …

The Inconsistencies Of Galadriel: The Influence Of Earlier Legendarium In The Lord Of The Rings, Alexander Retakh Oct 2024

The Inconsistencies Of Galadriel: The Influence Of Earlier Legendarium In The Lord Of The Rings, Alexander Retakh

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Explores how various tales of the earlier legendarium (History of Middle-earth, vol. 1-5) influence The Lord of the Rings’s development. The connection stretches beyond the obvious adoption of previously composed myths to self-borrowing of settings and characters. In particular, analyzes the character of Galadriel, who often seems to parallel Melian, another "Lady of the Wood." Though potentially a composite of many influences, Galadriel was written quickly as if its author followed an already fixed model. But her story contains what Chirstopher Tolkien called "severe inconsistencies" suggesting that this model was not fully aligned with the narrative, i.e. …

Friar Jack, The Science-Fiction Apologist: Exploring “The Friar Of Oxford” By William Lindsay Gresham, G. Connor Salter, Sørina Higgins Oct 2024

Friar Jack, The Science-Fiction Apologist: Exploring “The Friar Of Oxford” By William Lindsay Gresham, G. Connor Salter, Sørina Higgins

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Few Inklings scholars have explored William Lindsay Gresham’s life outside of the fact that he was married to Joy Davidman. His poem “The Friar of Oxford,” published here for the first time, shows a surprising level of engagement with C.S. Lewis’s ideas, combining war imagery with references to the Ransom Cycle and a “mushroom cloud” reference that may show he explored one of Lewis’s literary influences. The poem’s contents add to existing Gresham-Inklings scholarship, and show Gresham accomplishing the same goals that the Inklings and their associates like Dorothy L. Sayers accomplished in their “escapist” or mythopoeic works.

Research On Application Of Intelligent Indication Signs In Improving Efficiency Of Crowd Evacuation, Heng Niu, Yanbin Han, Liang Li, Weilin Chen, Sijie Niu, Qingtao Hou

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Aiming at the low emergency evacuation efficiency of dense crowds in confined spaces, a crowd evacuation guidance model based on intelligent signs is constructed in this paper. A balanced congestion strategy to optimize the signs layout and a social network search-based sign guidance weights optimization method are proposed to improve evacuation efficiency. Simulation experiments show that the optimized intelligent sign layout can effectively alleviate the local congestion during evacuation and reduce the time consumption of pedestrians caused by congestion. The optimized intelligent sign guidance weights can further balance the utilization rate of exits, which is conducive to making full …

Apache Stronghold v. United States of America

On Petition for a Writ of Certiorari to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit

From the Summary of Argument

Meaningful access to sacred sites such as Oak Flat is an indispensable part of many Indigenous tribes’ religious exercise. Nonetheless, the government has repeatedly denied necessary access to these sites, and even destroyed them, thwarting the ability of tribal members to exercise core aspects of their spiritual practices. Regrettably, the Ninth Circuit’s errant decision denies the Apache people critical legal protections against such destruction—and thus only invites the …

Forecasting The 2024 Republican Presidential Nomination: Can The Former Heavyweight Champ Win Another Title Shot?, Andrew J. Dowdle, Randall E. Adkins, Karen Sebold, Wayne P. Steger

Public Policy Faculty & Graduate Student Publications and Presentations

Abstract

Donald Trump’s bid for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination is unique in that no former president since Theodore Roosevelt in 1912 has sought the nomination of their political party, nor has a candidate sought the nomination while facing multiple criminal indictments. With data from previous nomination cycles, we use presidential nominations from 1980 to 2020 to create a forecast for the 2024 Republican primaries. The variables in the equations consist of data from the pre-primary period (e.g., money raised, cash reserves, elite endorsements, and polling results) and a second model with results of the Iowa caucuses and the New …

Fock Space And Field Theoretic Description Of Nonequilibrium Work Relations, Andrew J. Baish, Benjamin Vollmayr-Lee Oct 2024

Fock Space And Field Theoretic Description Of Nonequilibrium Work Relations, Andrew J. Baish, Benjamin Vollmayr-Lee

Faculty Journal Articles

We consider classical, interacting particles coupled to a thermal reservoir and subject to a local, time-varying potential while undergoing hops on a lattice. We impose detailed balance on the hopping rates and map the dynamics to the Fock space Doi representation, from which we derive the Jarzynski and Crooks relations. Here the local potential serves to drive the system far from equilibrium and to provide the work. Next, we utilize the coherent state representation to map the system to a Doi–Peliti field theory and take the continuum limit. We demonstrate that time reversal in this field theory takes the form …

Measuring Norm Pluralism And Perceived Polarization In Us Politics, Folca Panizza, Eugen Dimant, Erik O. Kimbrough, Alexander Vostroknutov Oct 2024

Measuring Norm Pluralism And Perceived Polarization In Us Politics, Folca Panizza, Eugen Dimant, Erik O. Kimbrough, Alexander Vostroknutov

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

Recent research has shown how norms shape political and economic decision-making. Much of this work assumes that a single norm influences the behavior of all people, but in fact, many situations are characterized by the existence of competing normative viewpoints. We apply a method for measuring belief in the simultaneous existence of multiple norms. Such multiplicity arises naturally when norms are associated with distinctive groups, and thus political polarization can be characterized, in part, as a product of diverging norms between groups. We thus assess the validity of our measurement technique by testing whether it can recover polarization on seven …

In A Moment: The Texture Of Transformative Experience, Amanda F. Mina Oct 2024

In A Moment: The Texture Of Transformative Experience, Amanda F. Mina

Journal of Conscious Evolution

This paper analyzes the personal narrative of a shocking event. The context of the event is established and the event itself is reflected upon as an experience of time dilation. This moment is examined through Welch’s (2010) elements of deepening time: repetition, attention, and intention, aligning the phenomenon with elements of Gebser’s (1985) integral structure of consciousness to place the experience within the movement toward the integral. Connections identified through the experience offer support for the idea that transcendent experiences of time are possible outside of the event itself and may lend themselves to personal transformation and point toward a …

Exploring The Impact Of Lighting Sources On Walking Behavior In Obstructed Walkways Among Older Adults, Yue Luo, Yuhao Chen, Gaojian Huang, Boyi Hu

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The pandemic has reinforced older adults' reliance on their homes and the concept of “aging in place”. Changes like reduced physical strength and cognitive deficit, however, have heightened the challenge of simple tasks like obstacle crossing among older adults, let alone when older adults cannot perceive the surroundings well during the nighttime. The study is, therefore, to evaluate the impact of lighting on older adults' obstacle-crossing behavior during the nighttime. Twenty-seven older adults (81 ± 6 yrs., 171 ± 12 cm, 75 ± 20 kg, 14 females) were recruited. Participants were asked to cross over the obstacle in a dark …

Inquiries into properties of brain structure and function have progressed due to developments in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). To sustain progress in investigating and quantifying neuroanatomical details in vivo, the reliability and validity of brain measurements are paramount. Quality control (QC) is a set of procedures for mitigating errors and ensuring the validity and reliability of brain measurements. Despite its importance, there is little guidance on best QC practices and reporting procedures. The study of hippocampal subfields in vivo is a critical case for QC because of their small size, inter-dependent boundary definitions, and common artifacts in the MRI data …

Increasing Frequency Of Extreme Climatic Events In Southern India During The Late Holocene: Evidence From Lake Sediments, A. S. Yamuna, P. Vyshnav, Anish Kumar Warrier, M. C. Manoj

Open Access archive

In this study, we aim to reconstruct southern India's intrinsic environmental changes over the past 1500 years from 3330 to 1830 cal BP by investigating the sedimentation and weathering dynamics in Lake Shantisagara, one of Karnataka's largest lakes. Four distinct climatic phases were delineated based on sedimentological, geochemical, and End Member Modelling Analysis (EMMA) results. Phase 1 (3330-3100 cal BP) is a short-term low rainfall zone characterized by a calm hydrodynamic environment and weak chemical weathering. Phase 2 (3100-2800 cal BP) is a climatically unstable phase, fluctuating between low and high rainfall conditions. Phase 3 (2800-2200 cal BP) is characterized …

In the ever-evolving landscape of biomedical diagnostics, the early diagnosis of a disease is important for not only a patient but also the public health of a country. In this regard, the detection of pathogens as well as the analysis of biomarkers from body fluids, for preventive healthcare at a very low concentration have been the subject of intense research lately. Despite the availability of numerous analytical tools, detecting trace concentrations of analyte with high specificity remains a formidable challenge. Driven by the advances in micro-nanofabrication tools, photonics, and nanotechnologies, a variety of optical techniques that utilize nanostructures or nanoparticles …
