Shrimp allergy, the most common food allergy in the United States, affects up to 2% of the population. Its etiology is multi-factorial with the combination of genetic predisposition and environmental exposures. This review summarizes the latest diagnosis and management strategies for shrimp allergy. Currently, the double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenge is the gold standard for diagnosis. Moreover, mainstream and experimental management strategies include food allergen avoidance, the FDA-approved omalizumab, and oral immunotherapy. Herein, we emphasize the urgent need to develop more effective diagnostic tools and therapies for shrimp allergy.

Organizing Black Business: The National Negro Business League, 1900–1915, Adam Chamberlain, Alixandra B. Yanus

Political Science

Founded by Booker T. Washington in 1900, the National Negro Business League (NNBL) sought to unite Black business owners, promote entrepreneurship, and develop economic power. Despite its prominence in the early twentieth century, the group declined after Washington’s death in 1915. As a result, little is known about its organizational development. This study uses data on state and local Negro Business Leagues (NBLs), along with active and life members of the NNBL, to better understand the group’s first fifteen years. Analyses reveal that the NNBL’s development reflected closely the social and economic context of early twentieth century Black America. Generally …

Tanzania Journal of Science

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is an infectious disease globally estimated to have caused between 500,000 to 1.2 million deaths annually. HBV prevalence is still high in Nigeria. Thus, this research aimed to identify factors germane to the widespread of HBV infection in an apparent clinical survey. The methods of analysis used were frequency, percentage and Principal component analysis (PCA). This was achieved through hospital record extracts of consultant hepatologists and the dimensionality reduction of the acquired data while retaining essential factors that are germane to the prevalence of HBV infection. The findings revealed that out of seventeen components evaluated in …

Pluripotent stem cells have remarkable self-renewal capacity: the ability to proliferate indefinitely while maintaining the pluripotent identity essential for their ability to differentiate into almost any cell type in the body. To investigate the interplay between these two aspects of self-renewal, we perform four parallel genome-scale CRISPR-Cas9 loss-of-function screens interrogating stem cell fitness in hPSCs and the dissolution of primed pluripotent identity during early differentiation. These screens distinguish genes with distinct roles in pluripotency regulation, including mitochondrial and metabolism regulators crucial for stem cell fitness, and chromatin regulators that control pluripotent identity during early differentiation. We further identify a core …

Proton-Decay Branches And Structures In 7li And In Neutron-Poor Nuclides Around Calcium, Nicolas Danato Dronchi

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The collection of proton decays observed via invariant-mass spectroscopy in this work have been applied to an array of topics in nuclear physics including the continuum effects on near-threshold resonances, the branching ratio for a quasi-bound system, and evidence for the evolution of shell structure. In the first experiment, the 6He(d,n)7Li* reaction was employed in an attempt to populate a resonance predicted by an ab initio calculation. No evidence of this resonance was found leading to a discussion on how the model needs to be improved in order to treat nuclear states above multiple thresholds. In a separate experiment, the …

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

In recent years, the negatively charged nitrogen- vacancy (NV) center has emerged as a promising solid-state color center capable of measuring magnetic fields with high sensi- tivity and spatial resolution under ambient conditions. In this thesis I will discuss how we perform super resolution magnetic microscopy and acquire magnetic field images of nanoparticle samples at 100 nm resolution. I will explain how 3D flux concentrators increase magnetic field amplitude and allows us to measure vector component magnetic fields as low as 50 µT with a diamond magnetometer, without the use of an additional bias magnetic field. I also describe how …

Cancer is a significant health challenge globally, with millions of people affected every year, resulting in high morbidity and mortality. Although other treatment options are available with limitations, chemotherapy, either standalone or combined with other therapeutic procedures, is the most commonly used practice of treating cancer. In chemotherapy, cancer cells/malignant tumors are targeted; however, due to less target specificity, along with malignant cells, normal cells are also affected, which leads to various off-target effects (side effects) that impact the patient quality of life. Out of all the different types of cancers, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer …

Disparities in surgical outcomes often result from subjective decisions dictated by surgical training, experience, and available resources. To improve outcomes, surgeons have adopted advancements in robotics, endoscopy, and intra-operative imaging including fluorescence-guided surgery (FGS), which highlights tumors and anatomy in real-time. However, technical, economic, and logistic challenges hinder widespread adoption of FGS beyond high-resource centers. To overcome these impediments, we combined laser diodes, Raspberry Pi cameras and computers, off-the-shelf optical components, and 3D-printed parts to make a battery-powered, compact, dual white light and NIR imaging system that has comparable performance to existing bulkier, pricier, and wall-powered technologies. We combined these …

Data-Driven Sparse Sensor Placement Optimization On Wings For Flight-By-Feel: Bioinspired Approach And Application, Alex C. Hollenbeck, Atticus J. Beachy, Ramana V. Grandhi, Alexander M. Pankonien

Faculty Publications

Flight-by-feel (FBF) is an approach to flight control that uses dispersed sensors on the wings of aircraft to detect flight state. While biological FBF systems, such as the wings of insects, often contain hundreds of strain and flow sensors, artificial systems are highly constrained by size, weight, and power (SWaP) considerations, especially for small aircraft. An optimization approach is needed to determine how many sensors are required and where they should be placed on the wing. Airflow fields can be highly nonlinear, and many local minima exist for sensor placement, meaning conventional optimization techniques are unreliable for this application. The …
