“I Have To Convince People I Am Worth Accommodating”: A Narrative Inquiry Of A Blind Student In Undergraduate Music Education, Erika J. Knapp, Julianna Lobiondo, Paulina Diaz

Visions of Research in Music Education

This narrative inquiry aimed to re-story the experiences of Paulina, a blind music education major, as she navigated her degree program at a large university. While scholars have begun to document the experiences of students who are blind or visually impaired in both PK-12 settings and during student teaching, no known study has explored the experience of a blind preservice student during their music education coursework. Utilizing critical disability studies as a lens, this narrative inquiry utilized the three commonplaces of temporality, sociality, and place to highlight Paulina’s experience. Data included interviews, memos from all three researchers, emails and texts, …

The "Heart And Soul" Of Music Education: Towards Sonic Egalitarianism In Classroom Practice, Doug S. Friesen, Laura J. Menard

Visions of Research in Music Education

As public high school teachers, we have independently come to the realization that we are both searching for ways that our music rooms can be spaces where everyone has a chance to sound (speak, sing, play an instrument), and students and teachers have the opportunity to hear others in the room. At the center of this realization stands the classroom piano: it could be an instrument of communal sonic enjoyment but, in our experiences, tends to be dominated by a few. What we are here calling sonic egalitarianism is about creating conditions whereby students have equal opportunities to sound out, …

Self-Compassion Among K-12 Music Educators, Jennifer Gee, Karen Koner Oct 2024

Self-Compassion Among K-12 Music Educators, Jennifer Gee, Karen Koner

Visions of Research in Music Education

The purpose of this study was to explore self-compassion among K-12 music educators. Our sample consisted of 139 practicing K-12 music educators across the United States. Participants completed a modified version of the Self-Compassion Scale Long Form (Neff et al., 2021), which measured both positive (self-kindness, common humanity, mindfulness) and negative (self-judgment, isolation, over-identification) aspects of self-compassion (Neff, 2003). Through one-way ANOVAs, we found significant differences between teaching experience and participants' scores for mindfulness, overidentification, self-judgment, isolation, and their overall self-compassion scores. We also discovered significant differences between age, over-identification, self-judgment, grade level taught, common humanity, and isolation.

Fostering Music Teacher Identity Development Through Mentoring Dialogues, Angela M. Munroe Oct 2024

Fostering Music Teacher Identity Development Through Mentoring Dialogues, Angela M. Munroe

Visions of Research in Music Education

In a prior investigation I focused on the cooperating teacher’s perspective during mentoring dialogues, reflecting on their role as a mentor (Munroe, 2021). Other researchers have focused on what the student teacher learns from the conversation, but not specifically on teacher identity development (Fernandez & Erbilgin, 2009; Tsui et al., 2001). In this study I recorded mentoring dialogues between three pairs of student teachers and cooperating teachers. Using stimulated recall interviews (Ericsson & Simon, 1999), I asked the student teachers to reflect on their perceptions of the cooperating teacher’s mentoring role and their teacher identity. I determined cooperating teachers’ mentoring …

Building Blocks For Geospatial Software Education Using The I-Guide Platform, Rebecca C. Vandewalle, Alexander Michels, Zhiyuan Li, Nattapon Jaroenchai, Shaowen Wang

I-GUIDE Forum

By combining advanced cyberinfrastructure with geospatial analysis capabilities and resources in an accessible online environment, the I-GUIDE Platform has great potential for geospatial computing focused education. However, learning occurs in different settings and contexts, both formal and informal. For I-GUIDE Platform to be successful, it should have the flexibility to support a variety of educational needs. In this paper, we argue for an expanded set of front-end building blocks to support diverse education and research use-cases, building on existing cyberGIS capabilities and Jupyter backend. We draw from experience working with the CyberGISX platform as an education tool in different learning …

Tradeoffs Of Generalization, Kyra M. Abrams, Peter T. Darch Oct 2024

Tradeoffs Of Generalization, Kyra M. Abrams, Peter T. Darch

I-GUIDE Forum

Models used in geospatial data science are often built and optimized for a specific local context, such as a particular location at a point in time. However, upon publication, these models may be generalized beyond this context, reused in research simulating or predicting other times and places. Without sufficient information or documentation, bias embedded in these models can in turn result in bias in the reuser’s research outputs. Drawing on a long-term qualitative case study of aging dams researchers and developers of models used by these researchers, we find significant documentation gaps. We combine a literature-based genealogy with interviews with …

I-GUIDE Forum

Rice trade has played a significant role in ensuring global rice consumption security. However, the spatial coupling of paddy fields based on rice trade can also transfer ecological environmental effects and threaten the sustainability of local systems. As the largest rice producer and consumer in the world, as well as one of the countries with the lowest per capita water resources, studying the inter-provincial rice flow in China and its water resource utilization efficiency is of great significance for ensuring national rice security and water resource security. Research has found that, China's rice consumption decreased by 11.97 Mt from 2000 …

Data-Intensive Convergence Science For Analyzing Place-Based Spatial Accessibility, Alexander C. Michels, Shaowen Wang Oct 2024

Data-Intensive Convergence Science For Analyzing Place-Based Spatial Accessibility, Alexander C. Michels, Shaowen Wang

I-GUIDE Forum

Place-based spatial accessibility is a critical tool for measuring the health, resilience, and sustainability of communities. Accessibility methods are employed by a wide range of fields to measure access to food, healthcare, infrastructure and other critical needs. While measures of access are relatively simple, they attempt to capture the complexities of human mobility and spatial decision-making to assess how well populations are served by the infrastructure, resources, and services at their disposal. This paper describes four key areas where data-intensive convergence science can revolutionize our understanding of place-based spatial accessibility by addressing issues of scale, spatial impedance, diversity, and accessibility. …

Uniqueness Of Maximum Points Of A Sequence Of Functions Arising From An Adapted Algorithm For ‘The Secretary Problem’, Boning Wang, Giang Vu Thanh Nguyen

OUR Journal: ODU Undergraduate Research Journal

This paper is aimed at a sequence of functions that is extended from an adaptive algorithm of the classical ‘secretary problem’. It was proved in Nguyen et al. (2024) the uniqueness of maximizers of a function sequence that represents the expected score of an element in a ‘candidate’ sequence. This function sequence is indeed considered as a special case of an extended function sequence that corresponds to the case α = 0. More specifically, we are motivated to prove the uniqueness of maximizers for this extended function sequence in the case α = 1. Nevertheless, the corresponding proof is rather …

An Introduction To The Time-Independent Schrödinger Equation And Methods To Solve It, Vu Giang, Alex Gnech

OUR Journal: ODU Undergraduate Research Journal

The Time-Independent Schrödinger Equation is a linear elliptic PDE that describes quantum-mechanical systems. Its significance in the science of submicroscopic phenomena, particularly quantum mechanics, is as central as Newton’s laws of motion are to classical mechanics. This study uses various methods, including novel neural networks and finite difference schemes, to solve the one-dimensional two-body equation.

Asymptotic Expansion Of A Maier-Saupe Type Potential Near The Nematic-Isotropic Transition Point In Liquid Crystals, Ryan P. Oneill, Giangvuthanh Nguyen, Xiang Xu Oct 2024

Asymptotic Expansion Of A Maier-Saupe Type Potential Near The Nematic-Isotropic Transition Point In Liquid Crystals, Ryan P. Oneill, Giangvuthanh Nguyen, Xiang Xu

OUR Journal: ODU Undergraduate Research Journal

In this paper we study a Maier-Saupe type bulk potential (Maier & Saupe, 1959) in the Landau-de Gennes free energy in the Q-tensor theory modeling nematic liquid crystal configurations. This potential was originally introduced in Katriel et al. (1986), which is considered as a natural enforcement of a physical constraint on the eigenvalues of symmetric, traceless Q-tensors. More specifically, we present a rigorous derivation of the asymptotic expansion of this singular potential near the nematic-isotropic transition point up to the 4-th order.

We Have Always Lived In The Freak Show: Alienating The Perverse And Seeking Out The Alien In Shirley Jackson’S We Have Always Lived In The Castle, Gianna Vaynberg

Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research

We Have Always Lived in the Castle tells the story of two sisters, Merricat and Constance Blackwood, who have been brought up by a wealthy family, most of whose members are now deceased. The family always isolated itself from the village, as evidenced by their gated mansion. In Shirley Jackson's gothic novel, the villagers' greed, jealousy, and patriarchal social structures cause Merricat and Constance to be perceived as a threat to the villagers' egos, as the sisters challenge their ideologies with their matriarchal structure, one that keeps their riches in the hands of women who live comfortably secluded from the …

That is, where horrific themes and devices are, so too lives the uncanny.

How Anthracite Smothered Centralia, Pennsylvania, Chris Kovalcik Oct 2024

How Anthracite Smothered Centralia, Pennsylvania, Chris Kovalcik

Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research

Underneath the long-abandoned streets of a remote Pennsylvania town, an inferno scorches the very earth. Centralia was once a booming mining community, but its history and legacy left it incinerated. A mine fire started in an old mining ditch would spread uncontrollably over the span of decades, causing the untimely end of the town. However, what really happened is not immediately clear, causing the story of Centralia to devolve into a confusing quagmire. Studying the intersection of governmental, social, and environmental historical evidence may unravel the mystery. This paper aims to elaborate on the history of Centralia and broader anthracite …

"Dollar Princesses" And "Husband Hunters": The Gilded Age Redefinition Of The American Heiress, Julia Baldowski

Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research

This thesis investigates the late 19th-century phenomenon of ``Dollar Princesses,'' affluent New York City socialites who strategically married into the British Aristocracy to secure their social status and power. This study focuses on figures such as Consuelo Vanderbilt, Jennie Jerome, and Minnie Stevens, examining how these women strategically utilized their marriages as platforms to advance their personal ambitions while navigating the rigid social hierarchies of the period. The analysis contends that these transatlantic unions were not merely transactions of wealth and status but were instrumental in challenging and redefining traditional social structures. By securing influence and asserting their identities within …

Reading Between The Lines: Censorship And The Political Role Of Public Libraries, Isabelle Agustin Oct 2024

Reading Between The Lines: Censorship And The Political Role Of Public Libraries, Isabelle Agustin

Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research

Public libraries have been mainstays of American culture and community for hundreds of years. As government entities of education, they are political actors, but they have not been properly acknowledged as such, both by the general public and existing legislation. This becomes evident through the rise in censorship that has occurred in recent years. From these cases, it can be observed that there is a divergence between how public libraries function in actuality and the expectations that legislation has placed upon them. That dissonance has been the source of political tensions between parent groups, state legislators, and public libraries. Ultimately, …
