Reduction Of Inpatient Falls In The Treatment Of Patients With Behavioral And Psychological Symptoms Of Dementia (Bpsd), April Davis

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Aim: To identify if utilization of non-pharmacological interventions versus pharmacological interventions can promote the reduction of falls and potential injuries in patients with BPSD on an inpatient geriatric psychiatric unit, ultimately improving patient-centered treatment courses, outcomes, and improved QOL. Background: Falls in the elderly population have a significant impact on the patient and the health care system. Even though health care organizations have been dedicated to developing and implementing strategies to reduce and prevent patient falls, they remain unequivocally the leading cause of adverse events that occur during an acute hospitalization, causing significant injury, disability, morbidity, mortality, and financial burden …

Exploring The Mediating Effects Of Beliefs Toward Mental Illness On The Relationship Between Religiosity And Self-Stigma Of Seeking Help, Grace-Ann Gibby Oct 2024

Exploring The Mediating Effects Of Beliefs Toward Mental Illness On The Relationship Between Religiosity And Self-Stigma Of Seeking Help, Grace-Ann Gibby

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

It is well-known that mental health concerns are common worldwide. Despite the increased research and strategic programs designed to improve mental healthcare systems, there are still persistent gaps in the accessibility and utilization of these services globally. The struggle to improve mental healthcare is even more difficult in developing countries. As a developing country, Bahamian society has insufficiently addressed mental healthcare. Mental health concerns have been categorized as a number one priority for The Bahamas, and a strong effort for the detection, prevention, and treatment of mental health is highly recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO, 2017). Statistics show …

Foundational American Faith And Support For Zionism, The Yishuv And The Haganah, 1945-1948: Ein Brera!, Tara K. Simpson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Modern-day Israel’s history includes countless examples of conflict, courage, endurance, and victory. The reconstitution of the Jewish nation in the Holy Land had no guarantee or certainty of success. In May 1948, five openly hostile Arab nations stood ready to invade Israel. This dissertation breaks down how by an incredible turn of events that includes a critical group of American Zionists and volunteer Haganah members, the fledgling Jewish nation was able to defend its land and people. A vital component to the strength and endurance of the Jewish people and the Haganah, a defensive force, was made possible because of …

Investigating The Effects Of Mindful Eating, Self-Compassion, Emotion Regulation, And Spiritual Experience On Compassion Satisfaction And Burnout Among Christian Counselors, Andrew D. Baker

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

It is crucial, in the effort to understand and to be intentional in positively affecting professional quality of life, to examine and balance the impacts of job demands. Nearly four decades ago, Figley introduced the concept of secondary victimization, which when unmitigated leads to compassion fatigue and burnout (Figley, 1988, 1995). Analyses show rates as between 46 and 83% of mental healthcare professionals face unique work environments relating to psychopathological symptoms and lower work satisfaction (Almadani et al., 2022; Lluch et al., 2022; Mollica et al., 2021; Morelen et al., 2022; Stebnicki, 2017; Unjai et al., 2022). The tutelage of our mentors as scientists included the analogy that writing a good scientific paper was an exercise in storytelling that omitted unessential details that did not move the story forward or that detracted from the overall message. However, the advice to not get lost in the details had an important flaw. In science, it is the many details of the data themselves and the methods used to generate and analyze them that give conclusions their probative meaning. Facts may sometimes slow or distract from the clarity, tidiness, intrigue, or flow of the narrative, but nevertheless they are important …

Greenland Summer Blocking Characteristics: An Evaluation Of A High-Resolution Multi-Model Ensemble, Linh N. Luu, Edward Hanna, Dilkushi De Alwis Pitts, Jacob Maddison, James A. Screen, Jennifer L. Catto, Xavier Fettweis

All Works

Atmospheric blocking is a phenomenon that can lead to extreme weather events over a large region, yet its causes are not fully understood. Global climate models show limitations in representing Northern Hemisphere blocking, especially its frequency, and decadal variability in Greenland blocking in summer in the recent decades. In this study we evaluate the ability of high-resolution (HighResMIP) Earth System Models (ESMs) to simulate summer blocking over the Greenland area, using different but complementary methods to describe the characteristics of blocking. We find that the HighResMIP ensemble can reproduce the spatial pattern of Greenland blocking events, albeit with systematic biases, …

Characterization Of Non-Standard Viral Genomes During Arenavirus Infections Identifies Prominent S Rna Intergenic Region Deletions, Matthew Hackbart, Carolina B López

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Arenaviruses, a family of negative-sense RNA viruses spread by rodents, are a leading cause of severe hemorrhagic fever in humans. Due to a paucity of antivirals and vaccines for arenaviruses, there is a need to identify new mechanisms for interfering with arenavirus replication. In several negative-sense RNA viruses, natural viral interference results from the production of non-standard viral genomes (nsVGs) that activate the innate immune system and/or compete for essential viral products. Although it is well established that arenaviruses produce strong interfering activities, it is unknown if they produce interfering nsVGs. Here, we show that arenaviruses produce deletions within the …

Investigators in neuroscience have turned to Big Data to address replication and reliability issues by increasing sample size. These efforts unveil new questions about how to integrate data across distinct sources and instruments. The goal of this study was to link scores across common auditory verbal learning tasks (AVLTs). This international secondary analysis aggregated multisite raw data for AVLTs across 53 studies totaling 10,505 individuals. Using the ComBat-GAM algorithm, we isolated and removed the component of memory scores associated with site effects while preserving instrumental effects. After adjustment, a continuous item response theory model used multiple memory items of varying …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Advances in mass spectrometry accelerates the characterization of HLA ligandome, necessitating the development of efficient methods for immunopeptidomics analysis and (neo)antigen prediction. We develop ImmuneApp, an interpretable deep learning framework trained on extensive HLA ligand datasets, which improves the prediction of HLA-I epitopes, prioritizes neoepitopes, and enhances immunopeptidomics deconvolution. ImmuneApp extracts informative embeddings and identifies key residues for pHLA binding. We also present a more accurate model-based deconvolution approach and systematically analyzed 216 multi-allelic immunopeptidomics samples, identifying 835,551 ligands restricted to over 100 HLA-I alleles. Our investigation reveals the effectiveness of the composite model, denoted as ImmuneApp-MA, which integrates mono- …

Do Linear Clearings In Boreal Peatlands Recover? Comparing Taxonomic, Phylogenetic, And Functional Plant Diversity, Ellie M. Goud, Scott J. Davidson, Anna Dabros, Kimberly Kleinke, Megan A. Schmidt, Maria Strack Oct 2024

Do Linear Clearings In Boreal Peatlands Recover? Comparing Taxonomic, Phylogenetic, And Functional Plant Diversity, Ellie M. Goud, Scott J. Davidson, Anna Dabros, Kimberly Kleinke, Megan A. Schmidt, Maria Strack

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Land-use changes and anthropogenic disturbances are major threats to biodiversity, affecting ecosystem function and recovery. In boreal Alberta, Canada, petroleum development has led to extensive landscape fragmentation, notably through linear clearings created for seismic exploration that remove surface vegetation and microtopography. Despite partial recovery on forested seismic lines, peatland recovery is often arrested, impacting wildlife and carbon dynamics. Restoration efforts employ silviculture techniques to create microtopography and foster tree growth, but the efficacy of restoration treatments in restoring peatland plant diversity remains uncertain. We compared taxonomic, phylogenetic, and functional diversity of understory plant communities across treated and untreated seismic lines, …
