Makara Journal of Science

Potent radiolabelled compounds eligible for therapy of prostate cancer need to be developed. Hence, we developed two candidate therapeutic agents bearing the iodine-131 (131I) radionuclide, namely, [131I]-xanthine (3,7-dihydropurine-2,6-dione) and [131I]-hypoxanthine (1,9-dihydro-6H-purin-6-one). The radiolabelled compounds were subjected to a cellular uptake study, which was accomplished by incubating [131I]-xanthine and [131I]-hypoxanthine with the human prostate cancer cell line (LNCaP) for 5, 15, 30, 60, and 90 min. Results showed that the accumulation of both [131I]-xanthine and [131I]-hypoxanthine in prostate cancer cells was significantly higher than the …

Nursing Faculty Members' Intentional Use Of Strategies That Promote Civility In The Bsn Classroom, Linda-Jo Pallotto-Russo

Dissertations

The purpose of this case study was to gain an understanding of nursing faculty members' intentional use of three research-based strategies that have been shown to promote civility in the BSN classroom. Specifically, Ajzen's (1985) Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) was used to analyze nursing faculty members' reports of their attitudes, normative beliefs, and control beliefs about the use of three research-based strategies that have been shown to promote civility in their classroom. Azjen theorized that individuals base their behaviors on intention and intentions are based on the individuals' attitudes toward the behavior, their perceptions of how others wanted them …

40-Gene Expression Profile Test Predicting Metastatic Risk In Localized, High-Risk Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma For Peer Review, Luna Samman, Chloe Fernandez, Carlos Gomez-Meade

GME Publications

This case study investigates the use of a 40-gene expression profile to independently predict the risk of metastasis in an immunocompromised 75-year-old male patient with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of his left cheek. The patient's previous medical history included non-melanoma skin cancer. Traditional staging methods, such as those from the American Joint Committee on Cancer 8th edition and Brigham and Women's Hospital, suggested a high risk of metastasis for this patient. However, the 40-gene expression profile test identified the patient as having a low risk (Class 1 result) of metastasis within 3 years. The patient successfully underwent Mohs surgery, and …

Integral Ida-Pbc Of Underactuated Mechanical Systems With Actuator Dynamics And Uncertain Coupling, Enrico Franco, Pablo Borja

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This work investigates the passivity-based control of a class of underactuated mechanical systems with first-order actuator dynamics and constant but uncertain coupling. The main contribution is a new dynamic extension of the interconnection-and-damping-assignment passivity-based control methodology that compensates for the effect of the model uncertainty. The effectiveness of the controller is demonstrated with numerical simulations on a ball-on-beam system.

Local voices carry tremendous weight during natural disasters, yet the possibilities for employing participatory communicative practices for disaster management in India have not been fully explored. Effective community-centred disaster communication garners participation in disaster management processes that reduce vulnerabilities. This paper examines how various community-based organisations used community radio to enhance community engagement and the effectiveness of the disaster management processes in the eastern Indian state of Odisha. The research relies upon case studies of disaster communication practices of two community radio stations during the ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ Yaas, which made landfall in Odisha. It describes the conceptual shift …

Recording and analysis of neural activity are often biased toward detecting sparse subsets of highly active neurons, masking important signals carried in low-magnitude and variable responses. To investigate the contribution of seemingly noisy activity to odor encoding, we used mesoscale calcium imaging from mice of both sexes to record odor responses from the dorsal surface of bilateral olfactory bulbs (OBs). The outer layer of the mouse OB is comprised of dendrites organized into discrete "glomeruli," which are defined by odor receptor-specific sensory neuron input. We extracted activity from a large population of glomeruli and used logistic regression to classify odors …
