Optimal utilization of the operating room (OR) is a crucial element in improving the efficiency of surgical services and hospital performance. This scoping review aimed to identify and map the factors influencing OR utilization based on recent scientific literature. We conducted a scoping review using the Population–Concept–Context (PCC) framework and reported it according to the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. We systematically searched PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect for articles published between 2015 and 2025. Eligible studies were screened, and information on study characteristics and reported determinants of OR utilization was extracted and summarized descriptively. Forty studies were included. Between 1880 and 1920, more than 20 million immigrants settled in the United States. We study how this migration wave affected innovation and growth. Using a newly constructed dataset linking individual census records to historical immigration records and the universe of US patents, we highlight a new channel through which immigrants contributed to growth: they disproportionately settled in urban innovation hubs. To quantify the aggregate and regional effects of this mass migration episode, we develop a new spatial growth model in which skilled workers have a comparative advantage in innovation and sort endogenously across space. Background and Objectives: Oral hygiene declines early in mild dementia (MD), yet few interventions specify which behavior change techniques (BCTs) drive improvement. We examined the use of BCTs in relation to oral health outcomes in a care-partner–assisted intervention for persons living with MD.

Research Design and Methods: Using a secondary convergent mixed-methods design, we analyzed the coaching arm of a three-arm randomized trial. Seventeen dyads (persons living with MD-care partners) completed four coaching sessions (68 coaching session transcripts). Seventeen BCTs were specified for use in the coaching manual. This commentary assesses the pragmatic framework proposed in Jonathan Birch’s The Edge of Sentience (2024). Celebrating the book's exceptional clarity, scientific rigor, and profound real-world impact on UK legislation, I nevertheless have some questions about the method by which Birch arrives at his policy recommendations for animal protection. In seeking an overlapping consensus between deeply divergent ethical and credal viewpoints, the framework risks defaulting to a minimalist, lowest-common-denominator standard of protection for animals. Birch also risks drawing the standard even lower by including serious academic positions in animal ethics that deny moral status for animals altogether. A rights-based approach offers …

Applying insights from the theory of collective action in self-governance, this paper addresses how a city-sanctioned homeless camp has successfully self-governed for over two decades. Based on a club goods model and democratic practices, this tent city attains social order and provides numerous collective benefits to its residents, who initially bring very little capital to the camp. Our case study, which includes in-depth interviews with residents of a tent city at four time points between 2012-2025, as well as observations from their weekly organizational meeting, illustrates how the possibility of exclusion for rule violation, norms emphasizing voice and service, and …

Although Congress bears primary responsibility for the convoluted nature of America’s immigration laws, immigration law has been rendered even more incoherent through inconsistent interpretation. During the reign of Chevron deference, the federal courts, the Board of Immigration Appeals and various Attorneys General pushed in different directions, with textualist, libertarian, and restrictionist impulses holding sway on different major interpretive questions. The result is that immigration law is more internally incoherent and more divorced from popular opinion than is necessitated by the text of the Immigration and Nationality Act. This article aims to reframe the scholarly discussion about securitizations—transactions in which multiple passive investors use a special purpose entity to take passive fractional ownership shares in one or more assets—in the context of residential real property interests. Residential real property securitizations (including mortgage-backed securities and real estate investment trusts) are relatively modern financial instruments and so are relatively underexamined from a policy perspective, and this article seeks to evaluate whether residential real property interests are amenable to securitization at all, concluding that they are not. Social media accounts have become valuable business assets, yet courts remain divided on how to resolve disputes over their ownership. In employer-employee contexts, some courts have adopted multi-factor tests to determine whether an account belongs to the business or the individual. However, these tests create inconsistent and unpredictable results, leaving businesses and employees uncertain about their rights. Courts should reject ad hoc multi-factor tests and instead rely on traditional legal frameworks, specifically property, contract, and agency law, to resolve social media ownership disputes. State v. Romero marked the first time the New Mexico Court of Appeals considered whether a New Mexico law disarming every person with a state felony conviction was unconstitutional under the Second Amendment. The court upheld the law, but only to the extent that it disarmed dangerous felons. The court found that the appellant was dangerous because he was previously convicted of dangerous crimes. This note questions whether prior convictions alone are sufficient to prove dangerousness. Criminal justice data and constitutional theory caution against dangerousness findings based on criminal history alone. Courts should determine dangerousness under the disarmament law using …

The New Mexico Inspection of Public Records Act (IPRA) is a powerful mechanism for government transparency. Although private companies that contract with state agencies are subject to IPRA, the New Mexico Corrections Department and its contractors continually flout their IPRA obligations. Newsome v. Centurion Correctional Healthcare highlights a tension between IPRA’s robust enforcement provisions and its practical application to government contractors. The Newsome opinion, in denying access to records that should have been disclosed, struggles to articulate how public bodies, contractors, and designated records custodians interact under IPRA. This study explores the relationship between race, gender identity, sexuality, and prison sentence length using data from the Survey of Prison Inmates, 2016. While state and federal guidelines are ostensibly in place to prevent disparate sentencing outcomes, research still finds disparities in prison sentence lengths across identities of defendants. Women generally receive more lenient sentences than men, and may be shown chivalry when processed through the criminal legal system. However, qualifications for chivalrous treatment have historically only been accessible to certain women (i.e. cisgender, heterosexual, white women). Simple and non-invasive transdermal vaccination is an attractive alternative to conventional injection-based immunization. However, the effectiveness of transdermal vaccines is often constrained by the stratum corneum barrier. Although the use of solid-in-oil (S/O) nanodispersion technology has successfully facilitated skin permeation to induce an immunological response, the antibody titers remain suboptimal. Herein, a dectin-1 selective ligand, laminarin, was used as an immunostimulatory adjuvant to enhance the immune response. S/O nanodispersions loaded with laminarin and ovalbumin (OVA) were systematically developed and characterized in terms of particle size, in vitro OVA release behavior, and skin permeation performance using excised mouse skin. Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is an aggressive hematological malignancy that is sustained by leukemia-initiating cells (LICs). Although protein tyrosine phosphatase 4A2 (PTP4A2), also known as phosphatase of regenerating liver 2 (PRL2), is highly expressed in AML, the mechanisms by which PTP4A2 promotes leukemogenesis are largely unexplored. In this study, we demonstrate that PTP4A2 promotes AML by inhibiting the p53 tumor suppressor pathway in LICs. Using KMT2A-MLLT3–driven AML as a model, we found that PTP4A2 deficiency activates p53 and induces LIC apoptosis and senescence, thereby extending the survival of recipient mice repopulated with Ptp4a2^−/− LICs. Objectives: Complex training is commonly used to enhance strength and explosive performance in athletes; however, the long-term influence of set configuration within complex training remains unclear in highly trained wrestlers. This randomized, volumematched trial investigated whether set configuration influences long-term adaptations to complex training (CT) in national-level male Chinese-style wrestlers. Specifically, the study compared the effects of cluster-set complex training (CS-CT) and traditional-set complex training (TS-CT) on maximal strength, lower-limb explosive performance, anaerobic power, and sport-specific performance.

This study addresses the escalating environmental, social, and economic challenges confronting informal settlements in coastal cities, with a specific focus on Alexandria, Egypt, as a representative model of the global coastal urban crisis. The research problem centers on the extreme vulnerability of the informal sector—which constitutes approximately 55%–60% of the city’s workforce—to climate change risks, particularly sea-level rise and recurrent storm surges (Nawat).
