Staff and Researcher Publications

Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) and spatial transcriptomics (ST) are two emerging research technologies that uniquely characterize gene expression microenvironments on a cellular or subcellular level. The skin, a clinically accessible tissue composed of diverse, essential cell populations, serves as an ideal target for these high-resolution investigative approaches. Using these tools, researchers are assembling a compendium of data and discoveries in healthy skin as well as a range of dermatologic pathophysiologies, including atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and cutaneous malignancies. The ongoing advancement of single-cell approaches, coupled with anticipated decreases in cost with increased adoption, will reshape dermatologic research, profoundly influencing disease characterization, …

May 4, 1970 At Kent State University: The Student Affairs Perspective, Erica Eckert

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

On May 4, 1970, the Ohio National Guard opened fire on students at Kent State University (KSU), killing four and wounding nine. Although this event marked a watershed moment in American culture and the start of a decline in activism related to the war in Vietnam, its place in higher education history is not well-understood. This paper traces the co-evolution of campus activism and the student affairs profession, situates the activism occurring at Kent State nationally and locally, and suggests the impact the shootings had on student affairs and law enforcement practice. The narrative is presented in large part through …

Community Through Scu Sociology Club, Kelly Lelapinyokul, Christina Nelson

Silicon Valley Sociological Review

As graduating seniors, we are blessed to reflect on all that the Sociology Department has done for us in the past 4 years. Starting at Santa Clara University in 2020, we took our first round of courses completely online, including SOCI 1: Introduction to Sociology, which we unknowingly took together, especially as it was so hard to meet other students asynchronously. In Spring 2021, a few classes transitioned into a hybrid format, one of which being SOCI 35: Intro to Research Design and Methods with Professor Nichols. We were one of few students that opted into the in-person learning option, …

Reflections On Migrant Farm Working Families, Sarahi Espinoza Salamanca Sep 2024

Reflections On Migrant Farm Working Families, Sarahi Espinoza Salamanca

Silicon Valley Sociological Review

When I think about Silicon Valley and the big tech companies that are only about a thirty-minute drive from Half Moon Bay, there are major differences between the pay, benefits, and perks that come with working at the goggles of the world. Thermos for work. Boots for the rain. Rain Gear. Hoodies to protect us from the sun and to keep us warm are some of the things that the campesinos asked for… I think of corporate jobs and how when you get hired you get all the material that you will need to do your job given to you. …

Data was collected on Jibu customers by way of a quantitative survey that uncovered customer profiles and carbon savings. Our analysis reveals that before purchasing Jibu water, many current customers treated water at home using carbon-emitting practices such as boiling water with charcoal or gas. Jibu customers are now reducing carbon emissions since they are no longer boiling …

Public Policy And The Future Of Ethnic Studies, Bryce Akira Nishikawa Sep 2024

Public Policy And The Future Of Ethnic Studies, Bryce Akira Nishikawa

Silicon Valley Sociological Review

Ethnic Studies (ES) was established in 1968 as part of the Third World Liberation Front’s (TWLF) efforts to reform higher education in ways that incorporated non-euro-centric teaching and increased the racial/ethnic diversity of students and faculty. On many college campuses, ES programs have created spaces for cross-cultural learning that promote respect and champion interpersonal interactions. Over the last 50 years, however, efforts to sustain diversity-centric education have remained isolated attempts by individual colleges and universities. In 2020, this changed when California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law Assembly Bill 1460. The bill took effect in the 2021-2022 academic year and …

The Entanglement Of Education And Employment In An Ai Economy, Samantha Frank Sep 2024

The Entanglement Of Education And Employment In An Ai Economy, Samantha Frank

Silicon Valley Sociological Review

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been ushering in a new wave of innovation. Yet the implementation of AI in the workplace has sparked controversy. Although robots taking over the workplace, or even society, has been a recurring trope since the industrial revolution, it resounds even more profoundly in today’s society. Much like the anxiety that emerged when factory workers’ jobs were being replaced by automation in the 1900s, today individuals' loss of value and economic security has taken center stage. Their anxiety is not without reason. AI has the potential to and has replaced human positions in many fields. However, much …
