Makara Journal of Science

In this study, amine-functionalized and Ni(II)-immobilized mesoporous silica materials were synthesized. This research aimed to synthesize mesoporous silica based on rice husk ash functionalized with amine and immobilized with Ni(II). The activity of amine-functionalized and Ni(II)-immobilized mesoporous silica materials was studied for the acetylation of benzyl alcohol with acetic anhydride as the acetylating agent. First, mesoporous silica was synthesized using rice husk ash using the sol–gel method, followed by amine functionalization using (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) and Ni(II) immobilization through ultrasonic treatment. The results obtained showed that amine-functionalized and Ni(II)-immobilized mesoporous silica (SiO2/APTES/Ni(II)) were successfully synthesized, confirmed by Fourier transform …

Makara Journal of Science

A first-principle study using density functional theory (DFT) and Boltzmann transport was conducted to evaluate the thermoelectric (TE) properties of an Fe-based full-Heusler alloy. The compound studied is Fe2CuSi with a Cu2MnAl-type structure. The electronic properties of Fe2CuSi were obtained using DFT calculations by running the Quantum ESPRESSO (QE) package. By contrast, TE properties, including electron thermal conductivity, electric conductivity, and Seebeck coefficient, were computed using a semi-empirical Boltzmann transport model solved through the BoltzTraP software at 50–1,500 K temperature range. The spin-orbit coupling effect on these properties was also evaluated, demonstrating notable effects …

Spatial Organization Of Adenylyl Cyclase And Its Impact On Dopamine Signaling In Neurons, Léa Ripoll, Yong Li, Carmen W Dessauer, Mark Von Zastrow

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The cAMP cascade is increasingly recognized to transduce physiological effects locally through spatially limited cAMP gradients. However, little is known about how adenylyl cyclase enzymes that initiate cAMP gradients are localized. Here we address this question in physiologically relevant striatal neurons and investigate how AC localization impacts downstream signaling function. We show that the major striatal AC isoforms are differentially sorted between ciliary and extraciliary domains of the plasma membrane, and that one isoform, AC9, is uniquely concentrated in endosomes. We identify key sorting determinants in the N-terminal cytoplasmic domain responsible for isoform-specific localization. We further show that AC9-containing endosomes …

KAGRA conducted its first joint observation with GEO 600 for two weeks in April, 2020. We performed two types of all-sky searches and two searches dedicated to gravitational wave signals associated with gamma-ray burst events observed during the run. We did not detect any gravitational wave signals, which was expected given the sensitivity of both detectors at that time. However, we did confirm that several search pipelines used in the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA collaborations worked effectively on the KAGRA data. In this presentation we will report on the data quality of detectors and the search results.

Makara Journal of Science

Shallots from Brebes, also called Bima Brebes, have a more pungent aroma compared to other varieties. Its high demand results in increased prices in the market, leading to frequent cases of fraud wherein Bima Brebes shallots are replaced with other types of shallots. This study aimed to develop an analytical method using gas chromatography–flame ionization detector (GC-FID) fingerprinting combined with chemometrics to authenticate Bima Brebes shallots. Essential oils were extracted through ultrasonic hydrodistillation, followed by organoleptic, refractive index, GC-FID fingerprinting and chemometric analysis. The yield value of the five studied shallot varieties ranged from 0.02% to 0.08% w/w. Meanwhile, the …

Nur77 Protects The Bladder Urothelium From Intracellular Bacterial Infection, Christina A Collins, Chevaughn Waller, Ekaterina Batourina, Lokesh Kumar, Cathy L Mendelsohn, Nicole M Gilbert

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Intracellular infections by Gram-negative bacteria are a significant global health threat. The nuclear receptor Nur77 (also called TR3, NGFI-B, or NR4A1) was recently shown to sense cytosolic bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS). However, the potential role for Nur77 in controlling intracellular bacterial infection has not been examined. Here we show that Nur77 protects against intracellular infection in the bladder by uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC), the leading cause of urinary tract infections (UTI). Nur77 deficiency in mice promotes the formation of UPEC intracellular bacterial communities (IBCs) in the cells lining the bladder lumen, leading to persistent infection in bladder tissue. Conversely, treatment with …

Located in the southern field of view of the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory, the eHWC J1825-134 region is one of the most complicated gamma-ray emission sites on the galactic plane. The region contains a few PeVatron candidates that can accelerate particles up to PeV energies. Disentangling the overlapping gamma-ray emission and associating it with accelerators is crucial to understand the mechanism of cosmic-ray acceleration and gamma-ray production near the accelerators. In this talk, I will present each of the gamma-ray sources resolved in this region using 1910 days of HAWC data, including their spectra. Also, we have studied their …

Morphology Classification Of High Redshift Galaxies From Jwst Nircam Images Using Unsupervised Machine Learning, James Liu

Theses

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has revolutionized our ability to observe high redshift (z > 2) galaxies, providing a glimpse into the early universe. Classification of these galaxies is crucial to advancing our understanding of galaxy and cosmic evolution. This work aims to develop a machine-based classification scheme for high redshift galaxies using JWST data. Given the immense volume of data generated by JWST, traditional classification methods are insufficient, necessitating an automated approach. We implement an unsupervised machine learning technique that combines a Vector-Quantized Variational Autoencoder (VQ-VAE) as a feature extractor and the K-means clustering algorithm as the classifier to …

Simple Summary

This study investigates racial disparities in the stage of gastric cancer at diagnosis and overall survival among different racial groups using data from the SEER database (2018–2021). The retrospective cohort study of 18,984 patients found that Hispanics are 19% more likely to be diagnosed at a later stage of gastric cancer compared to non-Hispanics. Additionally, both Hispanics and Black patients showed poorer overall survival compared to Non-Hispanic Whites. The disparities are attributed to factors such as healthcare access, insurance coverage, language barriers, and preventive health service utilization. These findings highlight the need for targeted interventions to address these …

AT2 consolidated three appeals by the same landlord, who sought to evict tenants from a basement apartment and two SRO units, claiming the building was a two-family dwelling and not rent-stabilized. Each tenant argued the building had seven residential units—one apartment and six SROs—making it subject to rent stabilization. The lower court agreed with the tenants, granting summary judgment due to the landlord's failure to serve required statutory termination notices. The Appellate Term affirmed, ruling that the building’s rent stabilization status depends on the units’ function as residences, regardless of their legality under a certificate of occupancy.

Background

Diplomonads are anaerobic flagellates classified within Metamonada. They contain both host-associated commensals and parasites that reside in the intestinal tracts of animals, including humans (e.g., Giardia intestinalis), as well as free-living representatives that inhabit freshwater and marine anoxic sediments (e.g., Hexamita inflata). The evolutionary trajectories within this group are particularly unusual as the free-living taxa appear to be nested within a clade of host-associated species, suggesting a reversal from host-dependence to a secondarily free-living lifestyle. This is thought to be an exceedingly rare event as parasites often lose genes for metabolic pathways that are essential to a …

How Do You Like Your Books, Jessica Silbey

Faculty Scholarship

Do you ever wonder how it is that libraries can lend books repeatedly, while copyright owners (e.g., book authors) are granted the exclusive right to distribute their copyrighted works? Or how publishers make money selling books at retail prices when a person can resell books (or buy used books) for much less (hello Amazon Used Books for under a dollar!)? The reason is because of copyright’s “first sale” doctrine, 17 U.S.C. § 109, codifying the common law’s exhaustion principle, which says owners of lawfully made copies are allowed to dispose of those copies without regard to copyright law. In other …

The Integrated Violin-Box-Scatter (Vbs) Plot To Visualize The Distribution Of A Continuous Variable, David W. Gerbing

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

The histogram remains a widely used tool for visualization of the distribution of a continuous variable, despite the disruption of binning the underlying continuity into somewhat arbitrarily sized discrete intervals imposed by the simplicity of its pre-computer origins. Alternatives include three visualizations, namely a smoothed density distribution such as a violin plot, a box plot, and the direct visualization of the individual data values as a one-dimensional scatter plot. To promote ease of use, the plotting function discussed in this work, Plot(x), automatically integrates these three visualizations of a continuous variable x into what is called a VBS plot here, …

Patients diagnosed with early-stage cancers have a substantially higher chance of survival than those with late-stage diseases. However, the option for early cancer screening is limited, with most cancer types lacking an effective screening tool. Here we report a miRNA-based blood test for multi-cancer early detection based on examination of serum microRNA microarray data from cancer patients and controls. First, a large multi-cancer training set that included 1,408 patients across 7 cancer types and 1,408 age- and gender-matched non-cancer controls was used to develop a 4-microRNA diagnostic model using 10-fold cross-validation. In three independent validation sets comprising a total of …
