The gig economy consists of individuals, known as gig workers, who perform on-demand labor through digital platforms, such as apps or websites. This structure provides gig workers flexible employment opportunities and autonomy over their hours. However, employers often incorrectly label gig workers as independent contractors, allowing employers to avoid paying federal and state taxes while also withholding worker protections typically required by federal law. Mislabeling gig workers persists due to the lack of state regulations defining the scope of employment relationships in the emerging gig industry, and the enforcement of arbitration clauses between workers and employers hinders the enactment of …

Chemistry and Biochemistry
Background
Polymorphisms are common in nature, but they are rarely shared among closely related species. Polymorphisms could originate through convergence, ancestral polymorphism, or introgression. Although shared neutral genomic variation across species is commonplace, few examples of shared functional traits exist. The blue-orange petal color polymorphisms in two closely related species, Lysimachia monelli and L. arvensis were investigated with UV-vis reflectance spectra, flavonoid biochemistry, and transcriptome comparisons followed by climate niche analysis.
Results
Similar color morphs between species have nearly identical reflectance spectra, flavonoid biochemistry, and ABP gene expression patterns. Transcriptome comparisons reveal two orange-specific genes directly involved in both blue-orange …

Faculty Research 2024
The International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium (IMPC) systematically produces and phenotypes mouse lines with presumptive null mutations to provide insight into gene function. The IMPC now uses the programmable RNA-guided nuclease Cas9 for its increased capacity and flexibility to efficiently generate null alleles in the C57BL/6N strain. In addition to being a valuable novel and accessible research resource, the production of 3313 knockout mouse lines using comparable protocols provides a rich dataset to analyze experimental and biological variables affecting in vivo gene engineering with Cas9. Mouse line production has two critical steps - generation of founders with the desired allele and …

Boosting Predictive Accuracy Of Single Particle Models For Lithium-Ion Batteries Using Machine Learning, Emmanuel Olugbade, Jonghyun Park
Boosting Predictive Accuracy Of Single Particle Models For Lithium-Ion Batteries Using Machine Learning, Emmanuel Olugbade, Jonghyun Park
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The accuracy of single particle (SP) models for lithium-ion batteries at high C-rates is constrained by lithium concentration gradients in the electrolyte, which affect ionic conductivity, overpotential, and reaction rates. This study addresses these limitations using extreme gradient boosting machine learning (ML). By training our ML model with data from a comprehensive electrochemical (P2D) model and performing sensitivity analysis on key battery parameters, we enhance predictive accuracy. Compared to conventional SP and P2D models under constant current loading, our ML-based SP model achieves similar predictive accuracy to P2D, with significant improvements in computational efficiency. Additionally, the ML-based SP model demonstrates …

Psoas abscess is a rare condition with an unclear clinical presentation where there is a collection of pus in the iliopsoas compartment. The most common cause of an iliopsoas abscess is infection with Staphylococcus aureus. Mycobacterium tuberculosis rarely causes psoas abscesses, with an incidence of about 10–30% of extrapulmonary tuberculosis and only 3% of tuberculosis in general. Psoas abscesses due to tuberculosis is quite rare and has non-specific symptoms, so it sometimes causes a late diagnosis. This case study reports on male aged 43-year-old patient who had previously been diagnosed with spondylitis tuberculosis (TBC) and complained of pain accompanied by …

Baku Mathematical Journal
This paper explores an inverse scattering problem for a system of Dirac equations with boundary condition depending on spectral parameter nonlinearly. We provide the scattering data corresponding to the boundary value problem and investigate some properties. In order to discuss inverse problem, the main equation is derived and its unique solvability is proved. As a consequence, we present the reconstruction of the potential matrix function from scattering data uniquely.

Lung nodules are frequently detected on low-dose computed tomography scans performed for lung cancer screening and incidentally detected on imaging performed for other reasons. There is wide variability in how lung nodules are managed by general practitioners and subspecialists, with high rates of guideline-discordant care. This may be due in part to the level of evidence underlying current practice guideline recommendations (primarily based on findings from uncontrolled studies of diagnostic accuracy). The primary aims of lung nodule management are to minimize harms of diagnostic evaluations while expediting the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of lung cancer. Potentially useful tools such as …

Low-dimensional hybrid organic–inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) are promising electronically active materials for light absorption and emission. The design space of HOIPs is extremely large, as a variety of organic cations can be combined with different inorganic frameworks. This not only allows for tunable electronic and mechanical properties but also necessitates the development of new tools for in silico high throughput analysis of candidate materials. In this work, we present an accurate, efficient, and widely applicable machine learning interatomic potential (MLIP) trained on 86 diverse experimentally reported HOIP materials. This MLIP was tested on 73 experimentally reported perovskite compositions and achieves a …

Doctoral-Level Practitioner’S Views And Opinions Regarding The Use Of Social Networking Sites In Criminal Responsibility Evaluations, Jillian Lafrance
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
According to the Pew Research Center, there has been an increase in social networking site (SNS) usage by 72% since 2011. Due to the rise, researchers have undertaken studies on using the internet and SNS-based data with forensic assessments. However, researchers have not explored the views and opinions of professionals who conduct these evaluations, specifically regarding doctoral-level practitioners and criminal responsibility. Due to this, the American Psychological Association (APA) does not have specific guidelines on using SNS as a collateral source. This study involved one-on-one interviews with seven doctoral-level practitioners who conduct criminal responsibility evaluations on individuals 18 and older …
