Investigating The Effects Of Empathy On Implicit Race Bias, Macy Kisiel
Investigating The Effects Of Empathy On Implicit Race Bias, Macy Kisiel
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Over the years there have been changes to social norms, which now discourage expressions of prejudice, and changes in many people’s self-reported attitudes, but prejudice is still a major issue in present-day American society. One important step toward addressing prejudice and social injustices is to understand the psychological processes that underlie and strengthen them. The current study aimed to use an empathy passage to positively prime the schema about a minority person of color and manipulate regulation of implicit bias. The study utilized a mixed 2 × 2 design. Sixty-four participants (Mage = 20.88 years, SD = 4.75 years) were …

Effects Of Simultaneous Alarms On Resolution Heuristics, Amanda C. Allen
Effects Of Simultaneous Alarms On Resolution Heuristics, Amanda C. Allen
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Automated signaling systems are frequently used to direct operator attention to potential hazards. Although these automated systems can lead to enhanced human performance, factors such as degraded alarm signal reliability and lack of trust can undermine the potential benefits of automation (Breznitz, 1984; Rice, 2009, Wickens & 2007). Additionally, work by Gilson, Mouloua, Graft, and McDonald (2001), as well as Keller and Rice (2009), suggest that an alarm contained within a larger array of alarms should not be evaluated individually. Due to the increasing use of multiple alarms in complex environments such as operating rooms and cockpits (Konkani, Oakley, & …

Etdsuite: A Toolkit To Mine Electronic Theses And Dissertations To Enrich Scholarly Big Data Using Natural Language Processing And Computer Vision, Muntabir Hasan Choudhury
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
In the past decades, there has been a growing interest in mining scientific documents to obtain domain knowledge automatically. One of the understudied types of scientific documents is Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs), as ETDs have distinct features compared with conference proceedings and journal articles. ETDs usually serve as partial requirements of academic degrees for students pursuing higher education. They are book-length documents (i.e., 100 – 400 pages long), and the topics may shift across chapters, exhibit the significant contribution of a student’s research over the entire degree pursuing period, and have unique metadata schema and page layouts. However, the …
A Dendrochronological Analysis Of Longleaf And Associated Pines From The Blackwater Ecological Preserve In Southeastern Virginia, Sarah Durham
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
The field of dendrochronology utilizes annual tree ring growth data to create chronologies, which function as proxies to measure the effect of climate on radial growth. In the southeastern United States, dendrochronological studies involving the effect of climate on the growth of Pinus species exist, but significant gaps persist. For this study, I: 1) created chronologies of earlywood, latewood, and total ring-width growth for longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.), loblolly pine (P. taeda L.), and pond pine (P. serotina Michx.) and 2) conducted a climate analysis on each species to determine how climatic factors affected radial …
Intercellular Mitochondrial Transfer Contributes To Microenvironmental Fate Redirection Of Mammary Cancer Cells, Julie Sofie Bjerring
Intercellular Mitochondrial Transfer Contributes To Microenvironmental Fate Redirection Of Mammary Cancer Cells, Julie Sofie Bjerring
Biomedical Sciences Theses & Dissertations
The dynamic cellular microenvironment, made up of resident cells and various macromolecules, differs markedly across tissues in the body. The multidirectional signals that cells receive from this microenvironment, along with the signaling they send back, heavily influence their physiology and behavior. Recent important findings have further validated this notion as the mammary microenvironment has been shown to suppress tumor progression by redirecting cancer cells to adopt a normal mammary epithelial progenitor fate in vivo. However, the mechanism(s) driving changes in metabolic reprogramming and cancer fate redirection is understudied. The work presented in this dissertation focuses on exploring the impact of …

A Quantitative Study Assessing The Impact Of Financial Sector Safeguards Rules On Us Publicly Traded Companies' Cybersecurity Breach Frequency And Severity, Alan Dinerman
School of Public Service Theses & Dissertations
Cybersecurity failure in the private sector is a growing federal policy priority. Nevertheless, US policy makers struggle with policy instrumentation in this domain. Behavioral public policy theory asserts that a linkage exists between policy target behavioral & cultural attributes and effective policy tool instrumentation. The federal government is now embracing a regulation heavy approach, but little empirical study exists at the nexus of behavioral public policy theory and use of regulatory tools in the cybersecurity policy domain. Since the early 2000s, the financial sector has employed a regulation heavy approach using the Safeguards regulations to facilitate cybersecurity in financial private …

A Self Consistent 2d Simulation Of Coherent Synchrotron Radiation Effects On Beam Dynamics, Dallan Duffin
Physics Theses & Dissertations
An increasing interest in high quality and high current electron beams necessitates a thorough understanding and prediction of coherent synchrotron radiation effects. The self-interaction of charged particles in a beam undergoing synchrotron motion is a physically significant process that is all too often computationally intensive with very little analytical results to rely on for the general case. The coherent spectrum of this interaction is of utmost importance to the design of free electron lasers (FELs) and an accurate assessment is imperative for their design. This work presents a novel implementation to the numerical simulation of charged particle beams. The simulation …

A Theoretical Framework For Resilience In Complex System Governance (Csg), Susan A. Caskey
A Theoretical Framework For Resilience In Complex System Governance (Csg), Susan A. Caskey
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation addresses a critical gap in resilience research within complex systems by developing a theoretical framework for governance resilience—an underexplored area despite governance's crucial role in maintaining system resilience. Using the Complex System Governance (CSG) framework (Keating, Katina, Chesterman, et al., 2022; Keating & Katina, 2019), resilience is conceptualized as a system's ability to absorb disturbances while sustaining performance and enabling adaptive transformation. This involves three main capabilities: persistence, adaptability, and transformation in response to both internal and external pressures.
Through a constructivist grounded theory approach involving iterative coding, memoing, and theory development, this study inductively constructs a governance …

The Cretaceous Diatom Database: A Tool For Investigating Early Diatom Evolution, Karolina Brylka, Matt P. Ashworth, Andrew J. Alverson, David J. Conley
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
The Cretaceous period is the time of the first appearance of the diatoms in the fossil record. These fossils give us direct evidence of the age and early evolution of the diatom lineage. The fossil record, however, is incomplete and therefore often extrapolated through time-calibrated phylogenies. These two approaches offer different perspectives on the early evolution of diatoms, which is still poorly understood. We compiled the first comprehensive Cretaceous Diatom Database, a tool to investigate the taxonomy, diversity, and occurrence of the earliest known diatom lineages. To further aid the integration and use of the oldest diatom fossils in molecular …

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD) that affects approximately 4% of males and 1% of females in the United States. While causes of ASD are multi-factorial, single rare genetic variants contribute to around 20% of cases. Here we report a case series of seven unrelated probands (6 males, 1 female) with ASD or another variable NDD phenotype attributed to de novo heterozygous loss of function or missense variants in the gene LARP1. LARP1 encodes an RNA binding protein that post-transcriptionally regulates the stability and translation of thousands of mRNAs, including those regulating cellular metabolism and metabolic plasticity. …

Abstract
Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies most commonly use cluster-based inference to detect local changes in brain activity. Insufficient statistical power and disproportionate false-positive rates reportedly hinder optimal inference. We propose a structural connectivity–guided clustering framework, called topological cluster statistic (TCS), that enhances sensitivity by leveraging white matter anatomical connectivity information. TCS harnesses multimodal information from diffusion tractography and functional imaging to improve task fMRI activation inference. Compared to conventional approaches, TCS consistently improves power over a wide range of effects. This improvement results in a 10%–50% increase in local sensitivity with the greatest gains for medium-sized effects. TCS …
