Dominantly Inherited Muscle Disorders: Understanding Their Complexity And Exploring Therapeutic Approaches, Andrew R Findlay
Dominantly Inherited Muscle Disorders: Understanding Their Complexity And Exploring Therapeutic Approaches, Andrew R Findlay
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Treatments for disabling and life-threatening hereditary muscle disorders are finally close to becoming a reality. Research has thus far focused primarily on recessive forms of muscle disease. The gene replacement strategies that are commonly employed for recessive, loss-of-function disorders are not readily translatable to most dominant myopathies owing to the presence of a normal chromosome in each nucleus, hindering the development of novel treatments for these dominant disorders. This is largely due to their complex, heterogeneous disease mechanisms that require unique therapeutic approaches. However, as viral and RNA interference-based therapies enter clinical use, key tools are now in place to …

We present GradualReality, a novel interface enabling a Cross Reality experience that includes gradual interaction with physical objects in a virtual environment and supports both presence and usability. Daily Cross Reality interaction is challenging as the user’s physical object interaction state is continuously changing over time, causing their attention to frequently shift between the virtual and physical worlds. As such, presence in the virtual environment and seamless usability for interacting with physical objects should be maintained at a high level. To address this issue, we present an Interaction State-Aware Blending approach that (i) balances immersion and interaction capability and (ii) …

Investigating Gender Bias In Large Language Models Through Text Generation, Shweta Soundararajan, Sarah Jane Delany
Conference papers
Large Language Models (LLMs) have swiftly become essential tools across diverse text generation applications. However, LLMs also raise significant ethical and societal concerns, particularly regarding potential gender biases in the text they produce. This study investigates the presence of gender bias in four LLMs: ChatGPT 3.5, ChatGPT 4, Llama 2 7B, and Llama 2 13B. By generating a gendered language dataset using these LLMs, focusing on sentences about men and women, we analyze the extent of gender bias in their outputs. Our evaluation is two-fold: we use the generated dataset to train a gender stereotype detection task and measure gender …

Automatic Multi-Contrast 2d Paraspinal Muscle Segmentation For Assessment Of Sarcopenia And Fatty Infiltration, Juan Pablo Esparza
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Cirrhosis is the final stage of liver disease requiring liver transplantation as treatment. In the past, models based on clinical laboratory values would determine the eligibility of liver transplant candidates. However, several patients can still suffer from liver transplantation complications leading to death. Sarcopenia, the loss of muscle mass, and frailty, the loss of muscle function, are common cirrhosis complications, but recently muscle area estimated at the third lumbar level has been studied as a prognostic to predict liver transplant mortality. Muscle fatty infiltration has been hypothesized to be a descriptor of muscle quality. However, a major bottleneck for implementing …

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
This study addresses the complexity of assessing river water quality, a multifaceted process influenced by numerous water quality parameters (WQPs) characterized by inherent uncertainties and diverse judgment information from decision-makers. These uncertainties and diverse judgment information can be effectively represented and simulated using Neutrosophic sets. In this study, we propose an effective water pollution rating system, the Neutrosophic water quality index (NWQI), to derive a water pollution score (NWQI-score) for rating water pollution levels. We demonstrate the application of our methodology through an assessment of water quality indices for rating pollution in the Gomati River, the largest river in Tripura, …

A Study On The Polarity Of Generalized Neutrosophic Ideals In Bck-Algebra, Bavanari Satyanarayana, Shake Baji
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
In this study, we apply k-polar generalized neutrosophic logic to the ideal of BCK-algebra and consequently introduce the notion of a k-polar generalized neutrosophic ideal in BCK-algebra with an example. We provide conditions for a k-polar generalized neutrosophic set to be a k-polar generalized neutrosophic ideal. We prove that every k-polar generalized neutrosophic ideal is a k-polar generalized neutrosophic subalgebra, but the converse is not true, which can be illustrated with an example. Furthermore, we prove that a k-polar generalized neutrosophic set is a k-polar generalized neutrosophic ideal if and only if its corresponding cut sets are ideals of the …

An Approach To Multi-Attribute Decision-Making Based On Single-Valued Neutrosophic Hesitant Fuzzy Aczel-Alsina Aggregation Operator, Raiha Imran, Kifayat Ullah, Zeeshan Ali, Maria Akram
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
A single-valued Neutrosophic hesitant fuzzy set (SVNHFS) is a combination of a single-valued neutrosophic set (SVNS) and hesitant fuzzy set (HFS) that has been developed to address insufficient, unreliable, and vague environments in which each element has several possible options determined by the truthiness, indeterminacy and falsity value. By considering this, in this paper, we have proposed the Aczel-Alsina aggregation operator (AAAO) for SVNHFS, which is more flexible t-norm and t-conorm than the other and due to the flexible nature of parameters to solve Multi-Attribute decision making (MADM) problems. Further, the score function, accuracy function, and certainty function of SVNHFS …

Fabrication And Evaluation Of Multicomponent Biomimetic Scaffolds For Bone Tissue Engineering, Mozan Osman Hassan
Fabrication And Evaluation Of Multicomponent Biomimetic Scaffolds For Bone Tissue Engineering, Mozan Osman Hassan
Dissertations
Bones have an inherent ability to remodel, but critical-size defects can hinder regeneration, leading to delayed healing or non-union fractures. Traditional bone grafts have limitations, such as donor site morbidity and immune rejection, driving the need for synthetic bone substitutes. Bone tissue engineering (BTE) addresses this by developing biomimetic scaffolds that replicate bone properties. This research aimed to fabricate composite scaffolds from strontium (Sr) and zinc (Zn) doped nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp), collagen, and poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA). Different doping percentages of Sr/Zn (1%, 2.5%, 4%) were used to fabricate the scaffolds using supercritical CO2 (ScCO2) and electrospinning techniques. Scaffolds were then analyzed for …

Spatial Characterisation And Drivers Of Catch And Effort In Highly Specialised Recreational Pelagic Fisheries, Shannon J. Burchert, Ebenezer Afrifa-Yamoah, Karina L. Ryan, Ute Mueller, Glenn A. Hyndes
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Large pelagic finfish are highly mobile, distributed across broad geographical scales, and often targeted by both commercial and recreational sectors. Fishing effort in these fisheries is variable due to seasonal patterns in fish behaviour and accessibility of fishing locations. Similarly, fisher behaviour and access are likely to differ within the recreational sector, between private boat-based fishing and charter (or for hire) fishing. Here, we compare spatio-temporal patterns in catch per unit effort (CPUE), effort (boat days) and catch (total catch per fishing party) for private boat-based and charter fishing, and identify environmental variables that may influence those patterns, for two …

Sequential Investment Decisions For Mining Projects Using Compound Multiple Volatility Real Options Approach, Atul Chandra, Peter R. Hartley
Sequential Investment Decisions For Mining Projects Using Compound Multiple Volatility Real Options Approach, Atul Chandra, Peter R. Hartley
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Managers evaluating investment decisions in mining projects have reported using the net present value approach (NPV). However, NPV has the drawback of collapsing variations from uncertainties in future project cash flows into a fixed expected project value today. Ignoring future uncertainties and contingencies can lead managers to make incorrect up-front binary decisions, such as investing in or abandoning the project now. The real options analysis approach (ROA) instead captures variations from uncertainties as volatilities in project value and allows flexibility in investment decisions to be contingent on information as it is revealed. Managers we consulted agreed that ROA is superior …

Background: Plant-rich dietary patterns may protect against negative health outcomes among individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD), although aspects of plant-based diet quality have not been studied. This study aimed to examine associations between healthful and unhealthful plant-based dietary patterns with risk of all-cause mortality among CKD patients for the first time.
Methods: This prospective analysis included 4807 UK Biobank participants with CKD at baseline. We examined associations of adherence to both the healthful plant-based diet index (hPDI) and unhealthful plant-based diet index (uPDI), calculated from repeated 24-h dietary assessments, with risk of all-cause mortality using multivariable Cox proportional hazard …

Background: Research suggests there is considerable opportunity to improve children’s movement behaviors while they are being cared for by their grandparents. An understanding of the extent to which grandparent practices facilitate children’s engagement in physical activity is critical to the development of health interventions targeting grandparent caregivers. This study examined the activity-related beliefs and practices of grandparents and their association with grandchildren’s engagement in various movement behaviors while in grandparental care. Methods: Australian grandparents (N = 1190; 60% women) who provided regular care to a grandchild aged 3–14 years were recruited via a web panel provider to complete an online …

Background and aims: Studies have found inconclusive results for the effects of physical activity (PA) interventions on substance use, mental health, and physiological health of people experiencing substance use disorders (SUDs). To improve PA interventions for individuals with SUDs, a deeper understanding of the underlying motivational processes is imperative. This study employs self-determination theory as a framework to explore factors impacting PA motivation in SUD treatment contexts. Methods: A qualitative research design utilising semi-structured interviews explored the experiences and perspectives of five people with lived or living experience of SUD treatment and five stakeholders within SUD treatment facilities across Western …

Background: Infant growth trajectories reflect current health status and may predict future obesity and metabolic diseases. Human milk is tailored to support optimal infant growth. However, nutrient intake rather than milk composition more accurately predicts growth outcomes. Although the role of protein leverage in infant growth is unclear, protein intake is important for early infancy growth.
Materials and methods: This study of exclusively breastfeeding mothers with allergies (n = 161) from the Infant Fish Oil Supplementation Study assessed relationships between intake of human milk macronutrients and infant growth. Human milk fat, protein and lactose concentrations were measured at 3 months …

The rapid integration of generative AI (GenAI) into industries and society has prompted a re-evaluation of copyright and intellectual property rights (IPR) frameworks. GenAI's ability to produce original content using data from human-created sources raises critical ethical and legal concerns. Current copyright and IPR frameworks, designed around human authorship, are insufficient to address these challenges. This study, using a multi-perspective approach, explores GenAI's disruptive potential in replicating or transforming copyrighted materials, challenging established IPR norms. Findings highlight gaps in legislation and the opacity of GenAI platforms. To address these issues, this study presents a Dynamic Ethical Framework linked to a …
