Disciple Making: From Doubter To Disciple, Brad Ransom

Great Commission Research Journal

The theme of our 2024 Great Commission Research Network conference was “Disciple Making: from Doubter to Disciple.” Disciple making is the mission and call of the Church and therefore must be a priority for church leaders. Every church needs a clearly developed and defined discipleship strategy or pathway that leads every person in its sphere of influence to a relationship with Jesus and growth in their faith. The problem is that many churches do not have such a plan.

Using Statistics In Church-Based Research, David R. Dunaetz Oct 2024

Using Statistics In Church-Based Research, David R. Dunaetz

Great Commission Research Journal

Although the proper use of statistics is challenging for most people, including researchers, aggregated numeric data is often the strongest evidence that a researcher can present to support an idea. This is because statistics is such a powerful tool for detecting trends that can be observed in complex contexts such as churches. Church researchers need to understand two classes of statistics: descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics describe the different variables that are measured in a study and include the mean, the standard deviation, and confidence intervals. They also include correlations showing how these variables are related to each …

Einstein Health Papers

Over the past decade, the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) funded multiple large-scale, comparative effectiveness clinical trials evaluating palliative care and advance care planning interventions. These are complex multicomponent interventions that need robust but flexible fidelity monitoring. Fidelity is necessary to maintain both internal and external validity within palliative care intervention research and to ultimately evaluate the real-world impact of high-quality interventions. Different trials not only took varying approaches to fidelity monitoring but also uncovered both unique and common challenges and facilitators. This article summarizes 8 of these trials and highlights approaches, adaptations, barriers, and facilitators for intervention fidelity monitoring. …

Harvesting Tacit Knowledge For Composites Workforce Development, John Summerscales Oct 2024

Harvesting Tacit Knowledge For Composites Workforce Development, John Summerscales

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Explicit knowledge can often be shared through textbooks, technical papers, instruction manuals, guides, and videos. It is normally objective, logical and technical. However, tacit (implicit) knowledge is any information or skills that arise from personal and professional experiences. It is often subjective, cognitive and experiential. When an individual leaves an organisation, they can take intellectual property with them that could compromise future operations, unless that knowledge is harvested. This brief review considers how transient knowledge might be retained in an organisation.

An Investigation Of Ransomware Incidents In The Maritime Industry: Exploring The Key Risk Factors, Ömer Söner, Gizem Kayisoglu, Pelin Bolat, Kimberly Tam

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Ransomware is a subset of malicious cyberattacks that aim to hold an organization’s data or critical infrastructure at ransom, compromising or blocking access. If the attack is public or made public after the initial attack, it can also severely jeopardize an organization’s reputation. Given the direct and immediate impact ransomware attacks can have and the lack of in-depth sharing, additional research is needed to analyze ransomware incidents in order to understand the underlying causes of incidents in addition to the detection and prevention methods. In this paper, 22 public ransomware incidents within the marine industry have been investigated to determine …

School of Medicine Publications

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD) that affects approximately 4% of males and 1% of females in the United States. While causes of ASD are multi-factorial, single rare genetic variants contribute to around 20% of cases. Here we report a case series of seven unrelated probands (6 males, 1 female) with ASD or another variable NDD phenotype attributed to de novo heterozygous loss of function or missense variants in the gene LARP1. LARP1 encodes an RNA binding protein that post-transcriptionally regulates the stability and translation of thousands of mRNAs, including those regulating cellular metabolism and metabolic plasticity. …

Topological Cluster Statistic (Tcs): Toward Structural Connectivity–Guided Fmri Cluster Enhancement, Sina Mansour L., Caio Seguin, Anderson M. Winkler, Stephanie Noble, Andrew Zalesky

School of Medicine Publications

Abstract

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies most commonly use cluster-based inference to detect local changes in brain activity. Insufficient statistical power and disproportionate false-positive rates reportedly hinder optimal inference. We propose a structural connectivity–guided clustering framework, called topological cluster statistic (TCS), that enhances sensitivity by leveraging white matter anatomical connectivity information. TCS harnesses multimodal information from diffusion tractography and functional imaging to improve task fMRI activation inference. Compared to conventional approaches, TCS consistently improves power over a wide range of effects. This improvement results in a 10%–50% increase in local sensitivity with the greatest gains for medium-sized effects. TCS …
