Diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic neuropathy (DN) are the most common complications among diabetes mellitus (DM) patients. Despite the widespread awareness, the implications of these serious diabetes complications remain poorly understood. Hence, this study aims to determine the association between DR and DN, predict DR and identify the significant risk factors associated with DR among DN patients based on the best predictive model obtained. Three models are employed in this study; Logistic Regression (LR) (Forward, Backward, Enter and Optimize), Decision Tree (Information Gain, Gini Index and Gain Ratio) and Artificial Neural Network with a splitting of 70-30. This study involved …

Osteoarthritis (OA) in the knee is a major cause of decreased activity and physical limitations among older people. Identifying and treating knee osteoarthritis in its early stages can help patients delay the progression of the condition. Currently, early detection of knee osteoarthritis involves the use of X-ray images and assessment using the Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grading system. Doctors' evaluations can be subjective and may differ among different doctors. Similar to a computer systems analyst, the automatic knee OA grading and diagnosis can be a valuable tool for doctors, enabling them to streamline their workload and provide more efficient care. An innovative …

On Localization Of Eigenfunctions Of The Magnetic Laplacian, Jeffrey S. Ovall, Hadrian Quan, Robyn Reid, Stefan Steinerberger
On Localization Of Eigenfunctions Of The Magnetic Laplacian, Jeffrey S. Ovall, Hadrian Quan, Robyn Reid, Stefan Steinerberger
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Let Ω ⊂ ℝd and consider the magnetic Laplace operator given by H(A) = (–i∇ – A(x))2, where A : Ω → ℝd, subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions. For certain vector fields A, this operator can have eigenfunctions, H(A)ψ = λψ, that are highly localized in a small region of Ω. The main goal of this paper is to show that if |ψ| assumes its maximum at x0 ∈ Ω, then A behaves 'almost' like a conservative vector field in a -neighborhood of x0 in a precise sense. In particular, we expect localization in regions where |curl A| is small. …
Understanding Bicuspid Aortic Valve: Global Prevalence, Genetic Factors, Long- Term Outcomes, Treatment Approaches And Knowledge Gaps, Grace Sligh
Honors Projects
Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) disease is the most common congenital heart condition in the world, with a prevalence of 0.5 to 2.0 %, with the highest predominance in Caucasian men. This disease causes two leaflets to form instead of the typical three leaflet and can lead to many complications. This paper explores the global prevalence of BAV, highlighting observed variations between ethnicities and geographical background. It also examines the genetic factors contributing to the condition, including known hereditary patterns and emerging genetic insights. This review also addresses risk factors associated with BAV, such as environmental and developmental influences, as well …

Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) aims to alleviate the black-box AI conundrum in the field of Digital Forensics (DF) (and others) by providing layman-interpretable explanations to predictions made by AI models. It also handles the increasing volumes of forensic images that are impossible to investigate via manual methods; or even automated forensic tools. A holistic, generalized, yet exhaustive framework detailing the workflow of XAI for DF is proposed for standardization. A case study examining the implementation of the framework in a network forensics investigative scenario is presented for demonstration. In addition, the XAI-DF project lays the basis for a collaborative effort …

The quality of field experience training is vital for the preservice teachers’ professional development. However, limited research works on field experience training programs limits the formation of optimised educational policies in the UAE. Further, proper understanding of the stakeholders’ perceptions is essential for forming suitable educational policies. Therefore, this study employed a mixed-methods model to investigate the perceptions of pre-service teachers and instructors about their field experience training. The pedagogic standards set by Danielson was used as the framework for assessing the perceptions of the participants regarding their pedagogy. Further, ‘Bem’s self-perception theory’ was applied while making detailed assessments on …

The numerous extensions of fuzzy groups (FG) and fuzzy subgroups are complicated. Several results depending on different approaches of FG theory were introduced. This study introduces a novel extension, named bipolar-valued fuzzy groups (BVF-groups), which are based on bipolar-valued fuzzy space (BVF-space) and are created using Dib’s methodology. The BVF-space replaces the universal set in conventional set theory. The BVF-space generalizes the notion of fuzzy space (F-space) from [0, 1] to [−1, 0] × [0, 1] for the range of membership function. The novel theory of BVF-group is achieved through the BVF-space and bipolar valued binary operation (BVFBO) to build …

"Asian" Principles For The Recognition And Enforcement Of Foreign Judgments? Singapore As A Case Study, Adeline Chong
"Asian" Principles For The Recognition And Enforcement Of Foreign Judgments? Singapore As A Case Study, Adeline Chong
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
This paper considers if there can be said to be an “Asian” body of principles for the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments. Tapping on the results of a research project which was conducted from 2016 to 2020, it is submitted that the answer to this query is in the negative. However, it is suggested that what marks out the “Asian” approach to private international law is the willingness of Asian countries to look outwards for reform and development and to balance the adoption of international norms against important local norms and objectives. Singapore’s approach to the recognition and enforcement …

Can Federated Learning Solve Ai’S Data Privacy Problem?: A Legal Analysis, Warren B. Chik, Florian Gamper
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
Federated learning (FL) is a method of training AI systems on different datasets without sharing data. The promise of FL is to enable AI systems to be trained on data, including personal data, while preserving data privacy and confidentiality, and thus, inter alia, facilitate compliance with data protection legislation. FL has generated a considerable interest amongst the computer science community, yet there is a dearth of legal analysis of FL. This is a problem because the question of whether FL facilitates compliance with data protection legislation is a legal question. This article will fill this lacuna by providing a comprehensive …

Australia has attempted to position itself as a world leader in Marine Protected Area (MPA) practice through leveraging its significant national MPA network as well as its heavy involvement in the creation of high seas MPAs in the Antarctic. However, the quality of Australia’s domestic and international MPA practice have separately been subject to similar and convincing critiques. Despite this, little research exists which highlights how these two levels of law-making may interact regarding MPAs. Hence, the question to be addressed is: ‘How does Australia’s domestic and international MPA practice interact?’ Through drawing upon middle power theory to characterise this …

BACKGROUND: Brain metastasis from prostate adenocarcinoma (PCa) is rare, often leading to death within a year. Its infrequent occurrence and atypical histopathologic features contribute to lower consideration in the differential diagnosis of tumor brain metastasis. This study aims to assess the clinical characteristics and distinctive histopathologic features of metastatic PCa in the brain for timely and enhanced diagnostic accuracy.
DESIGN: A retrospective search spanning 20 years (2003-2022) was conducted on our archives and identified 21 cases diagnosed as "metastatic prostate adenocarcinoma (mPCa)" in brain biopsies and resections. All existing slides were thoroughly reviewed to evaluate the histopathology of the mPCa. …

Despite the growing number of binary black hole coalescences confidently observed through gravitational waves so far, the astrophysical origin of these binaries remains uncertain. Orbital eccentricity is one of the clearest tracers of binary formation channels. Identifying binary eccentricity, however, remains challenging due to the limited availability of gravitational waveforms that include the effects of eccentricity. Here, we present observational results for a waveform-independent search sensitive to eccentric black hole coalescences, covering the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO and Virgo detectors. We identified no new high-significance candidates beyond those that have already been identified with searches focusing on …

Donkeys (Equus asinus) were first imported in substantial numbers to Australia in 1866 by Sir Thomas Elder. They were used as pack and draught animals in outlying areas of Western Australia (WA) until the 1930s. They were eventually replaced by the motor vehicle, and unwanted donkeys were released to the wild, where they became feral. The first record of feral donkeys is from the Kimberley in the early 1930s, but it is possible they became feral much earlier.

Biosecurity factsheets
The goat (Capra hircus) was one of the first animals to be domesticated, 8 to 10 thousand years ago. Archaeological work indicates the earliest attempts at domestication were in dry hills surrounding the Mediterranean basin. The ability of goats to utilise the coarse browse of mountainous areas made them suitable for domestication, in preference to sheep. With large-scale domestication of goats throughout the world, goats escaped and established feral goat herds on most continents. Overgrazing by goats has caused severe environmental damage, worldwide.
Goats arrived in Australia with the first fleet. They were introduced to many areas by early settlers …

Trust And Robotics: A Multi-Staged Decision-Making Approach To Robots In Community, Wenxi Zhang, Willow Wong, Mark Findlay
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
With the desired outcome of social good within the wider robotics ecosystem, trust is identified as the central adhesive of the human–robot interaction (HRI) interface. However, building trust between humans and robots involves more than improving the machine’s technical reliability or trustworthiness in function. This paper presents a holistic, community-based approach to trust-building, where trust is understood as a multifaceted and multi-staged looped relation that depends heavily on context and human perceptions. Building on past literature that identifies dispositional and learned stages of trust, our proposed decision to trust model considers more extensively the human and situational factors influencing how …
