Dyslexia, a complex neurological condition affecting reading and language processing, is intricately tied to variations in brain structure and function. This article explores the neurological underpinnings of dyslexia, emphasizing phonological, visual, and attention-related impairments. Furthermore, the analysis highlights various types of dyslexia—phonological, surface, rapid automatized naming, and visual—while addressing their neurological correlations. It also investigates the relationship between dyslexia and other neurodivergent conditions, such as autism and ADHD, focusing on the neurological overlap and differences. To mitigate the challenges associated with dyslexia, advanced technologies such as virtual reality (VR) and eye-tracking are discussed for their diagnostic and intervention potential. These …
Demographic Characteristics As Moderators For The Association Between Cigarette Smoking And Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Aregash Tewoldeberhan Kidane
Demographic Characteristics As Moderators For The Association Between Cigarette Smoking And Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Aregash Tewoldeberhan Kidane
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Diabetes mellitus is a major public health problem and is associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare expenditure in the United States. Several studies have been conducted that showed cigarette smoking is associated with an increased incidence and prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM); however, there is no published information in the literature on the moderating effects of gender/sex and race/ethnicity on this association. The purpose of this quantitative, cross-sectional study was to address this gap in the literature and examine the association between cigarette smoking and DM and the moderating effect of sex and race/ethnicity on the association between cigarette …
Shooting/Filming Digong: History And Politics Of The Duterte Regime Through Philippine Cinema, John Adrianfer Atienza
Shooting/Filming Digong: History And Politics Of The Duterte Regime Through Philippine Cinema, John Adrianfer Atienza
Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance
The study intends to map and examine the Rodrigo Duterte regime through Philippine cinema. Viewing films as historical artifacts, it uses contemporary films made during, connected to, but not necessarily about Duterte, as discursive nodes to engage and navigate, more so examine and interrogate, his regime’s history and politics. The study firstly contextualizes the local film scene and industry during the regime alongside noting relevant film characters to Duterte to elucidate matters on his politics. It then spotlights a sample of films of the period—Marcos-Duterte films, War on Drugs films, and women-centered films—to further expound and examine his regime’s history …
Following The Wounded Women In Isabela, Kaisa R. Aquino
Following The Wounded Women In Isabela, Kaisa R. Aquino
Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance
This article examines some elements in the crafting of my novel, Isabela (2024), particularly its novelistic formation, and its take on the emblematic figure of the wounded woman in war. I demonstrate what non-conventional stylistic and conceptual decisions give the story its syncretic mode of thought, as its trail shifts from city to barrio, one category of fiction to another, and one wounded woman to the next. I also argue that all these movements and turns are necessary in the novel’s project of representation, as it envisions to narrativize the ongoing historical moment that is the people’s struggle for liberation …

Illegal, Unreported And Unregulated (Iuu) Fishing As Pathways To Human Trafficking: Navigating The Trafficked State Of Migrant Filipino Fishermen In J.W. Henley’S Migrante, Mary Harmony I. Guevarra
Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance
This study focuses on how J.W. Henley’s Migrante (2020) illustrates the synchroneity of Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing to the human trafficking dynamics at sea, in which the maturation and onset of its male protagonist’s psychological and physiological damages confirm his trafficked state. This paper offers further scrutiny on the gendered footing of human trafficking and opens a reframing of its discourse. Migrante tells the painful story of Rizal, who finds employment in a fishing vessel on the shores of Su’ao, Taiwan; as his crew go about their routine at sea which is interspersed with illegal trades in the …

Navigating Discourse Communities: Intercultural Rhetoric And Genre Pedagogy, K. Elizabeth Reid
Navigating Discourse Communities: Intercultural Rhetoric And Genre Pedagogy, K. Elizabeth Reid
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
To equip English Learner (EL) students for success in college and career, EL instructors should teach not just writing mechanics but how to understand and adapt to different discourse norms. They should also avoid minimizing the techniques of marginalized communities, which leads to this capstone's guiding question: How can EL instructors teach rhetorical conventions in ways that promotes rhetorical versatility, self-esteem in conventions most common to students' cultures, and understanding of what is expected in American academic writing assignments? Intercultural rhetoric and genre pedagogy suggest attributing varying rhetorical norms to different audiences and purposes rather than assigning inherent value. Therefore, …
Enhancing Two Units Of 8th Grade U.S. History Curriculum To Support The Development Of Experienced Multilinguals’ Usage Of Oral And Written Academic Language, Olivia Nicholson
Enhancing Two Units Of 8th Grade U.S. History Curriculum To Support The Development Of Experienced Multilinguals’ Usage Of Oral And Written Academic Language, Olivia Nicholson
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Inspired by a group of middle school experienced multilinguals (EMs), this capstone project sought to take an asset-based approach to redesigning two units of U.S. history curriculum so that the strong oral language skills of these students could be used as an educational tool for practicing academic language in speaking and writing. To complete this project, the researcher first studied the importance of using asset-based language and referring to this group of students as experienced multilinguals in lieu of long-term English learners. The researcher also examined theoretical frameworks such as Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory and Bakhtin’s theory of dialogism that support …
Supporting Secondary Math Students In Developing A Positive Math Identity, Sarah Reisdorf Berger
Supporting Secondary Math Students In Developing A Positive Math Identity, Sarah Reisdorf Berger
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
It is not uncommon for students (and adults) to experience anxiety when it comes to math class. The underlying notion that mathematics is simply not meant for some while being meant for others permeates the culture in the United States. For students, the development of their math identities begins at an early age and is heavily influenced by their experiences in school, specifically the math classroom. With so much at stake in terms of identity development, achievement, and future success, this capstone project sought to explore the question: How can students be actively supported in building a positive math identity …
The Intangible Divide: Why Do So Few Firms Invest In Innovation?, James Bessen, Xiupeng Wang
The Intangible Divide: Why Do So Few Firms Invest In Innovation?, James Bessen, Xiupeng Wang
Faculty Scholarship
Investments in software, R&D, and advertising have grown rapidly, now approaching half of U.S. private nonresidential investment. Yet just a few hundred firms account for almost all this growth. Most firms, including many large ones, regularly invest little in capitalized software and R&D, and this "intangible divide" has surprisingly deepened as intangible prices have fallen relative to other assets. Using comprehensive US Census microdata, we document these patterns and explore a variety of factors associated with intangible investment. We find that firms invest significantly less in innovation-related intangibles when their rivals invest more. One firm's investment can obsolesce rivals' investments, …
Evolving Corporate Philanthropy, David I. Walker
Evolving Corporate Philanthropy, David I. Walker
Faculty Scholarship
With the rise of corporate ESG initiatives and public benefit corporations, corporate philanthropy is evolving from an emphasis on cash contributions (contributional philanthropy) to an emphasis on adjusting operations to advance the public good (operational philanthropy). All forms of corporate philanthropy are controversial, but this article evaluates the impact of this evolution on the relative benefits and concerns of corporate philanthropy, arguing that the shift in emphasis towards operational philanthropy increases the comparative advantage of corporate philanthropy, increases agency costs, both simplifies and complicates shareholder primacy concerns, and increases the difficulty of prescriptively regulating corporate philanthropy through the tax code …
Constitutional Disorder, Robert L. Tsai
Constitutional Disorder, Robert L. Tsai

This is a review essay inspired by two books: Yuval Levin's American Covenant (2024) and Erwin Chemerinsky's No Democracy Lasts Forever (2024). I make the following points. First, all treatments of the U.S. Constitution can be mapped on a continuum from the worshipful to the diagnostic. Second, Levin's account, which inclines toward the devotional, extols certain features deemed both originalist and virtuous: social unity over untidiness, consensus over dissent, fear and loathing of mass politics. Third, such accounts may not be sufficiently nimble to grapple with contemporary problems such as new forms of oligarchy or movement capture of traditional parties. …
Contracting Hoop Dreams: Using Sports Law To Teach Transactional Practice, Cody Jacobs
Contracting Hoop Dreams: Using Sports Law To Teach Transactional Practice, Cody Jacobs
Faculty Scholarship
One of the places I find the most joy in teaching legal writing is problem development—writing compelling factual scenarios that give students interesting legal issues to work through is rewarding and fun. The best prompts will motivate students to really jump into their role representing their client and encourage them to think about the “big picture”—how the law ties into social, political, and economic structures in society at large. Much has been written about the best ways to do this in the context of litigation assignments (briefs, memos, etc.), but there has been less discussion about problem creation in the …

Beyond The Screen: Unpacking Gender’S Influence On The Gaming World, Celia K. Killen
Beyond The Screen: Unpacking Gender’S Influence On The Gaming World, Celia K. Killen
Selected Honors Theses
Gender is a concept that touches each and every person across the world. It is also something that affects many facets of human life. The gaming world is not separate from it as a concept, and there are areas in which the two clearly intersect. Women have long been effectively outcast from the industry, and this stems from more than just simple biases—women are distanced from technology, struggle to enter male-dominated workplaces, and are not considered real gamers because of the culture. Much of the literature touches on the experiences of women in the industry, the gendered experiences of audiences, …
A Case Study Analysis Examining The Removal Of Unanimity From Death Penalty Sentencing, Jeremiah J. Moniz
A Case Study Analysis Examining The Removal Of Unanimity From Death Penalty Sentencing, Jeremiah J. Moniz
Selected Honors Theses
The following thesis is written as a result of the 2023 law passed in the state of Florida that removed unanimity for death penalty sentencing proceedings. The thesis looks into the previously researched information on death penalty law, juries, and the combination of the two. It then examines three two-prong case studies comparing cases in Alabama to cases in North Carolina and Ohio to determine if there are any specific or general differential outcomes when it comes to the removal of unanimity in death penalty sentencing trials. The results of the case study found significant differences in jury voting in …

Thesuppression Ofcoffeehouses: Acomparisonofthe17thcentury Londonandmoderncoffeeshopmovements, E. Spring Iskra
Selected Honors Theses
The coffeehouses of the 17th century in London were places of vibrant political discourse. Patrons of the shops could sit for hours debating relevant societal matters for hours with strangers of all different backgrounds. This environment was well-aligned with the theories introduced by Jürgen Habermas regarding the public sphere. Are contemporary coffee shops still places of vibrant discourse? In order to answer this question, an ethnographic study was conducted in a mid-sized city in central Florida analyzing nine local coffee shops. The analysis consisted of three primary categories: layout and design, discursive resources, and public events. The findings of this …

Accurate forecasting of solar power output and load demand is critical for the efficient operation and management of isolated microgrids, where reliability and sustainability are paramount. Traditional methods often struggle with data scarcity, limitations in capturing intricate temporal dynamics, and lack of scalability. This research introduces a novel multi-task learning (MTL) model, the Self-Aware Quantized Multi-Task ConvLSTM (SAQ-MTCLSTM), which addresses these challenges by jointly forecasting solar power and load demand while leveraging shared representations across these interdependent time series. The SAQ-MTCLSTM incorporates a sophisticated architecture that combines convolutional and LSTM layers with self-aware quantization to enhance computational efficiency and model …
Shocking Sentences, John B. Meixner Jr.
Shocking Sentences, John B. Meixner Jr.
Scholarly Works
Harsh recidivist sentencing penalties, like three-strikes laws, have been criticized heavily among both academics and practitioners on a number of different grounds. Most arguments focus on how sentences arising from these penalties are disproportionate—that there is no sensible relationship between the wrong committed and the sentence imposed. Those critiques are valid, but there’s another important problem with recidivist sentencing penalties that has been overlooked: they lead to sentences that are totally unexpected—indeed, shocking—to the defendants who face them. Many recidivist sentencing penalties cause large leaps in sentencing exposure that amount to exponential growth when compared with a defendant’s prior sentences. …

Drowsy Driver Detection System Via Facial Recognition And Driving Data, Nur Iman Kamila Azharudin, Hafizah Mansor, Shaila Sharmin
Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 17.6% of all fatal crashes in the years 2017–2021 involved a drowsy driver. This study proposes a drowsy driver detection system that uses both facial recognition and vehicular data to detect if a driver is feeling sleepy behind the wheel. We aim to address a lack of works in the literature that combine data measured from the driver (image or biological data) and vehicular data for drowsy driver detection. Our primary data was collected from simulated driving sessions in which a camera was used to record test drivers’ faces while …

Decision Tree And Rule Based Classification For Predicting Online Purchase Behavior In Malaysia, Maslina Abdul Aziz, Nurul Ain Mustakim, Shuzlina Abdul Rahman
Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)
In Malaysia, fast growth in e-commerce speeds a business need to understand and predict consumer online behavior in order to be more competitive. While the whole world is embracing big data analytics, many businesses in Malaysia, particularly those in the ecommerce sector, find it hard to harness these technologies to their benefit. The absence of specific predictive models and the complexity of socio-cultural diversity further complicate the efforts toward understanding consumer preferences. Therefore, this research tries to fill in some of the gaps by applying decision tree and rule-based algorithms to classify online purchasing behavior amongst Malaysian consumers. The study …
