Examining Officer, Agency, And Victim Characteristics In On-Duty Fatal Shootings, Molly A. Whetstone, Eric M. Cooke, Philip M. Stinson

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

This study examines the characteristics of officers, agencies, and victims involved in an on-duty fatal shooting. Previous research has identified that officer gender, experience level, and victim race influence incidents but has often overlooked agency characteristics. This study uses data from the Henry A. Wallace Police Crime Database to examine the relationship between officer, agency, and victim characteristics of officers charged with murder or manslaughter resulting from an on-duty fatal shooting. This analysis aims to inform discussions that could lead to new policies and implications for police agencies.

This collection (cataloged on Bib #2888882) is comprised of items related to American industries, companies, and association/guilds, primarily from the 1940s to 1960s. These include short publications, pamphlets, reports, and product catalogs. The items originated with the Library’s vertical file, which was culled and the majority of items discarded in 2020. Items related to Alabama and items deemed of significant historical interest were retained and added to the Library’s Special Collections. The vertical file’s original contents date back to JSU’s time as a Normal School; it appears items were added up until at least the 1990s.

Novel near-infrared ratiometric molecules (probes A and B) produced by linking formyl-functionalized xanthene and methoxybenzene moieties, respectively, onto a xanthene-hemicyanine framework are detailed. Probe A exhibited a primary absorption peak at 780 nm and a shoulder peak at 730 nm and exhibited fluorescence at 740 nm↓ (signifies a downward shift in intensity upon acidification) in a pH 9.3 buffer and 780 nm↑ at pH 2.8 under excitation at 700 nm. Winter conditions often lead to significant traffic delays and safety risks due to ice or snow accumulation on pavement surfaces. This study evaluates the potential of electrically conductive asphalt (ECA) pavements to prevent such accumulations by melting ice and snow under real-world conditions. The study involved preparing ECA mixtures using graphite and carbon fibers, three carbon fiber lengths (3 mm, 6 mm, and 24 mm), and aggregates with two nominal maximum aggregate sizes (NMAS) (4.75 mm and 9.5 mm). Objective: Otolaryngologists play an increasing role in managing cough, but little data exists examining the demographics of this patient population and the referral patterns that influence their access to care. This study sought to elucidate these factors using a longitudinal, nationwide database to minimize sampling bias and identify trends representative of the national population. Longitudinal studies using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) focused on adolescent internalizing psychopathology are scarce and have mostly investigated standardized treatment effects on functional connectivity (FC) of the full amygdala. The role of amygdala subregions and large resting-state networks had yet to be elucidated, and treatment is in practice often personalized. Here, longitudinal FC development of amygdala subregions and whole-brain networks are investigated in a clinically representative sample. Patriotism is often described as the “love of country” that individuals display in the acclamation of their national community. Despite the prominence of this sentiment in various societies around the world, organizational research on patriotism is largely absent. This omission is surprising because entrepreneurs, human resource (HR) divisions, and firms frequently embrace both patriotism and patriotic organizational practices. These procedures include (among other interventions) national symbol embracing, HR practices targeted toward military members and first responders, the adulation of patriots and celebration of patriotic events, and patriotic-oriented corporate social responsibility (CSR). The Militarization of the Urban Space of Rio de Janeiro is the synthesis of different historical processes: The state through massive incarceration of black and racialized people, and the systematic elimination of black poor people from favelas through urban policing operations by security and armed forces, traffic patrols, and paramilitary/vigilante groups. Together, they result in the production of different actors that exert violent territorial domination for economic exploitation and social control.

Environmental justice is essential for improved quality of life and sustainable wellbeing. This study examines how environmental issues and related injustices are surfacing in U.S. social work practice and social work readiness to respond, and what resources social workers are most interested in. Data are from an online survey of U.S. social workers (N = 337) in Colorado, Ohio, and Tennessee. Participants answered questions about their social work background, current job, environmental issues in practice, resources, and demographics. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics. This research aimed to identify Pan-American notable people with head and neck cancer (HNC) and to explore senior health professionals' perspectives on communicating stories of notable patients with HNC to promote prevention. Pro-regenerative lipid mediator 1 (PreM1) is a specialized pro-resolving lipid mediator that promotes wound healing and regenerative functions of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), endothelial cells, and macrophages. The healing of third-degree (3°) burns and regenerative functions of MSCs are enhanced by ACgel1, an arginine-and-chitosan-based protein-mimic hybrid hydrogel. Adipose-tissue derived microvascular fragments (MVFs) are native vascularization units and a rich source of MSCs, endothelial cells, and perivascular cells for tissue regeneration. Here we describe an innovative PreM1-MVFs-ACgel1 construct that incorporated PreM1 and MVFs into ACgel1 via optimal design and fabrication. Effective weed management is a significant challenge in agronomic crops which necessitates innovative solutions to reduce negative environmental impacts and minimize crop damage. Traditional methods often rely on indiscriminate herbicide application, which lacks precision and sustainability. To address this critical need, this study demonstrated an AI-enabled robotic system, Weeding robot, designed for targeted weed management. Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S. Watson) was selected as it is the most troublesome weed in Nebraska. According to The American Superintendent 2020 Decennial Study, only 1.4% of respondents who hold the superintendent position identify as Black women (Tienken & Domenech, 2021). This percentage has remained under 2.2% for 20 years, though the percentage of white women and non-Black women of color has increased. Current research indicates that Black women have historically been exploited and undervalued at work, with exploitation extending as far back as American slavery, and being undervalued stemming from manufactured stereotypes of Black women for the purpose of sustaining white supremacy. We present an overview and first results from the Spectroscopic Ultradeep Survey Probing Extragalactic Near-infrared Stellar Emission (SUSPENSE), executed with NIRSpec on JWST. The primary goal of the SUSPENSE program is to characterize the stellar, chemical, and kinematic properties of massive quiescent galaxies at cosmic noon. In a single deep NIRSpec/MSA configuration, we target 20 distant quiescent galaxy candidates (z = 1-3, H AB ≤ 23), as well as 53 star-forming galaxies at z = 1-4. With 16 hr of integration and the G140M-F100LP dispersion-filter combination, we observe numerous Balmer and metal absorption lines for all quiescent candidates. We derive …

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is a school-based educational intervention aimed at helping children and youth develop competencies to promote positive academic growth, behavior, and development. The success of the SEL intervention depends on several factors beyond the curriculum, including the role of teachers, the quality of the SEL implementation, and the classroom and school context. While research on the teachers’ role in successful SEL implementation has been conducted, less is known about how SEL is implemented in an impoverished and diverse school context in British Columbia in Northern Canada.
