Exploring How Uncertain Labels From Non-Consensus Panels Affect Machine Learning, Amal Almansour

A dataset becomes meaningful for analysis when it contains more representative features. Machine and deep learning models rely on annotated instances for training. The annotation process is usually done either by humans (experts or crowdsourcing) or by models. In many cases, the variability between humans (the inter-observer variability) in evaluation leads to uncertainty in the learning process. Due to the lack of reliable labels in large datasets, the inter-observer variability can be quantified with different methods to estimate the ground truth label (i.e., referenced standard label) for model learning.

Many Parkinson’s disease (PD) models overexpress α-Synuclein using heterologous promoters, which is adequate to demonstrate that excessive α-Synuclein is toxic but not ideal for learning the precise ontogeny of the disease pathogenesis, specifically where the disease starts and how it progresses. To answer these questions, it is beneficial to generate a mouse model expressing a disease-causing mutation under the endogenous promoter. Here, we generated three Snca knock-in mice. Among them, homozygous Snca^G51D mice develop motor deficits by 9 mo of age. These mice exhibit olfactory and gastrointestinal abnormalities by 6 mo. For over five years, United Airlines (“United”) flight attendants, represented by their union, the Association of Flight Attendants (“AFA-UA”), have faced stalled contract negotiations with United management.  The AFA-UA is calling for wage increases and improved schedule flexibility.  The starting pay rate for a United flight attendant maxes out at about $25,992 per year, and some employees have to rely on food stamps and alternative housing options because they cannot afford to pay rent.  Unwilling to work under these conditions any longer, the AFA-UA voted 99.99% in favor to authorize a strike on August 24, 2024.

Background:

Aphasia, resulting from acquired brain injury, disrupts language processing and usage, significantly impacting individuals’ social communication and life participation. Given the limitations of traditional assessments in capturing the nuanced challenges faced by individuals with aphasia, this study seeks to explore the potential benefits of integrating multimodal communication elements into discourse analysis to better capture narrative proficiency in this population.ObjectiveThis study examined how incorporating multimodal communication elements (e.g., physical gestures, writing, drawing) into discourse analysis may affect the narrative outcomes of persons with aphasia compared to those observed using methods that exclude multimodal considerations.

Despite success in treating some hematological malignancies, CAR-T cells have not yet produced similar outcomes in solid tumors due, in part, to the tumor microenvironment, poor persistence, and a paucity of suitable target antigens. Importantly, the impact of the CAR components on these challenges remains focused on the intracellular signaling and antigen-binding domains. In contrast, the flexible hinge and transmembrane domains have been commoditized and are the least studied components of the CAR. BACKGROUND: Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) is common, and 20-30% of patients presenting with HMB are diagnosed with an inherited bleeding disorder (IBD). Despite the frequent association of HMB with bleeding disorders, specific learning objectives on this topic are lacking for Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBGYN) residents. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the exposure of OBGYN residents to didactics, clinical training, and confidence in evaluation and management of patients with HMB due to IBDs. METHODS: Prospective survey of OBGYN residents through email solicitation. This workshop is for graduate and undergraduate students involved in science and engineering research on the Glassboro campus. It is critical for students to understand the pros and cons of making their research results available worldwide on Rowan University's institutional repository (Rowan Digital Works). While Open Access has many benefits, there are also potential issues around journal publication and commercialization that must be considered. Student researchers should understand the implications of making their research Open Access, to make an informed choice now and in their future research.

The Alaska Justice Information Center (AJiC) administered the Alaska Police—Public Contact Survey (PPCS) from May 1, 2022 through September 30, 2022. The primary aims of the PPCS were to develop an Alaska-specific estimate of adult Alaskans who came into contact with police in the preceding 12 months, to describe the nature and outcomes of police—public encounters, and to assess the attitudes and perceptions of adult Alaskans as they pertain to police.
