Geography And The Emergence Of Sustainability Science: Missed Opportunities And Enduring Possibilities, Drew E. Bennett Sep 2024

Geography And The Emergence Of Sustainability Science: Missed Opportunities And Enduring Possibilities, Drew E. Bennett

The Geographical Bulletin

The dawn of the 21st century saw the emergence of the newly declared field of “sustainability science.” The new field’s research agenda focuses on meeting human needs while simultaneously sustaining the life support systems of the planet. The field works to merge the natural and social sciences with analyses conducted from global to local scales. Sustainability science resembles the long-standing human-environment tradition in geography, yet geography was not widely recognized as a fundamental discipline during the emergence of sustainability science. The failure of geography to exert itself in the birth of sustainability science is the latest failure by geography to …

Facebook As A Way Oflife: Louis Wirth In Thesocial Network, Larissa Zip, Rebekah Parker, Elvin Wyly

The Geographical Bulletin

The rise of social networking practices has inspired widespread public debate and scholarly attention: a growing share of social relations began to take place online in the virtual worlds of social media sites at the same time that the ‘real’ world became majority-urban. What are the implications of these trends for how we understand the geography of urban society? In this paper, we re-engage one of the foundational contributions of twentieth-century Chicago School sociology, Louis Wirth’s article “Urbanism as a Way of Life,” (1938) to understand the socio-spatial implications of social media in an era of planetary urbanization. A growing …

Fifty Years Of Cultural Cannibalism: Contemporary Attitudes Towards Globalization In Ceará, Ryan Schleeter Sep 2024

Fifty Years Of Cultural Cannibalism: Contemporary Attitudes Towards Globalization In Ceará, Ryan Schleeter

The Geographical Bulletin

This paper focuses on the influence of Tropicália—a Brazilian art and music movement of the 1960s and 1970s—on contemporary attitudes towards cultural globalization in Ceará, Brazil. This paper examines the influence of one Tropicalist ideal in particular, the concept of antropofagia, or cultural cannibalism. Cultural cannibalism promotes the consumption of foreign cultures with the goal of internalizing and synthesizing with local cultures, and subsequently creating something wholly original. The goal of the paper is to assess the impact of antropofagia on modern attitudes towards globalizing processes and globalized phenomena in Ceará, particularly related to music. Few of the key actors …

Pooping In Public: Syrian And Egyptian Desert Fathers As Textual Constructs, Andrew Cole Sep 2024

Pooping In Public: Syrian And Egyptian Desert Fathers As Textual Constructs, Andrew Cole

Chronos

This article explores how saints are textually constructed in two Late Antique hagiographic collections, the Lausiac History of Palladius of Galatia and the Historia Religiosa of Theodoret of Cyrrhus. In particular, it relates narrative techniques applied in each work to the authors' purposes and agendas. The paper explores how Late Antique bishops as authors shaped power dynamics that manipulated, defended, and glorified the “Holy Men” under their episcopal supervision, creating an idealized type of asceticism that they could more easily control.

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 17(1): 1377-1391, 2024. Fatigue accumulated during the practice of endurance running can be understood as the decrease in sports performance caused by physical exertion. Since fatigue can manifest itself in multiple ways, its influence is difficult to understand, and many authors propose different studies with the aim of obtaining firm conclusions. Thus, the aim of this systematic review was to analyze the effect of fatigue on the modification of biomechanical parameters to mitigate adverse effects and optimize positive adaptations to training. A systematic review was carried out using scientific research papers from specific sport science …

The Infidel “I”, Zahra Taheri Sep 2024

The Infidel “I”, Zahra Taheri

Journal of International Women's Studies

Being a girl in a media-saturated world is one of the hardest situations. Young girls coming of age are bombarded by media feeds that urge them to follow behavioral patterns set by patriarchal culture. Offered as a manual on how to behave like a “good girl,” these patterns direct young girls’ energies towards unattainable ideals they try to live up to throughout their lives. They also offer girls a narrow perspective through which to view life and their identities. This distorted lens foregrounds some aspects of a woman’s life while downplaying others. It gradually naturalizes some patterns as the dominant …
