Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Background:

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake remains low among people who could benefit, some of whom may prefer alternatives to oral PrEP, such as long-acting injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis (LAI-PrEP). We evaluated the potential for LAI-PrEP provision in pharmacies through a mixed methods study of pharmacists in California, where Senate Bill 159 enables pharmacists to independently provide oral PrEP.

Methods:

In 2022–2023, we conducted an online cross-sectional survey of California pharmacists and pharmacy students (n = 919) and in-depth interviews with pharmacists (n = 30), both of which included modules assessing attitudes about PrEP provision. Using log-binomial regression, we estimated prevalence ratios …

Using Statistics In Church-Based Research, David R. Dunaetz Oct 2024

Using Statistics In Church-Based Research, David R. Dunaetz

Great Commission Research Journal

Although the proper use of statistics is challenging for most people, including researchers, aggregated numeric data is often the strongest evidence that a researcher can present to support an idea. This is because statistics is such a powerful tool for detecting trends that can be observed in complex contexts such as churches. Church researchers need to understand two classes of statistics: descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics describe the different variables that are measured in a study and include the mean, the standard deviation, and confidence intervals. They also include correlations showing how these variables are related to each …

Disciple Making: From Doubter To Disciple, Brad Ransom Oct 2024

Disciple Making: From Doubter To Disciple, Brad Ransom

Great Commission Research Journal

The theme of our 2024 Great Commission Research Network conference was “Disciple Making: from Doubter to Disciple.” Disciple making is the mission and call of the Church and therefore must be a priority for church leaders. Every church needs a clearly developed and defined discipleship strategy or pathway that leads every person in its sphere of influence to a relationship with Jesus and growth in their faith. The problem is that many churches do not have such a plan.

My Soul, She Walks Behind Me, Sanyukta Shiv Kumar Oct 2024

My Soul, She Walks Behind Me, Sanyukta Shiv Kumar

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

This thesis reimagines the consequences of my great-grandmother’s life. It is an attempt to demystify women’s conditioned roles within private and public spaces and note how, through this conditioning, their identity is repressed to the point of diffidence and eventually, abhorrence towards their own bodies and the physical spaces they occupy. This is portrayed in poetry form through the voice of my great-grandmother as the primary speaker, and is interspersed with the voices of the grandmother, the mother, and the great-granddaughter.

My great-grandmother’s lived experience consisted mostly of her life as a young wife, mother, devotee, and storyteller. She told …

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

This study reports faculty experiences regarding the discovery of scholarly content, highlighting similarities and differences across a range of academic disciplines. The authors interviewed twenty-five faculty members at a public, high-research university in the Midwest to explore the intersections of discovery, browsing, and format from diverse disciplinary perspectives. Although most participants rely on similar discovery tools such as library catalogs and databases and Google Scholar, their discovery techniques varied according to the discipline and type of research being done. Browsing is not a standard method for discovery, but it is still done selectively and strategically by some scholars. Journal articles …

Exploring Machine Learning, Feature Engineering, And Explainability To Constrain Spica’S Apsidal Constant Through Mesa Simulations, Hannah C. Woodruff Oct 2024

Exploring Machine Learning, Feature Engineering, And Explainability To Constrain Spica’S Apsidal Constant Through Mesa Simulations, Hannah C. Woodruff

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Spica (α-Virginis) is a notable binary star system located in the constellation of Virgo and offers valuable insights into stellar interiors and dynamics. Within binary systems, gravitational forces between the two stars cause minor distortions that alter their orbital motion. The steady rate of this alteration is known as the apsidal constant, which provides key information about a star’s internal structure and its evolutionary state. Traditionally, stellar environments like Spica are studied using simulations, such as MESA (Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics). These simulations allow researchers to explore various aspects of stellar behavior through the entire evolution of the …

Fly Like A Naval Aviator: Effect Of Procedural Angle-Of-Attack Training On Pilot Comprehension And Decision-Making In General Aviation, Tara Samuels Oct 2024

Fly Like A Naval Aviator: Effect Of Procedural Angle-Of-Attack Training On Pilot Comprehension And Decision-Making In General Aviation, Tara Samuels

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

To make life-saving equipment more accessible to general aviation (GA) aircraft owners and operators, the FAA streamlined installation of angle of attack (AOA) systems in GA fleets. Yet studies suggest GA pilots are ill-equipped to use these systems without training. Pilot performance suffers when an AOA is added to the flight deck because pilots’ knowledge with these systems is merely declarative (know-what) and not sufficiently procedural (know-how). Furthermore, GA pilots struggle to integrate the indicator into their existing (and well-rehearsed) mental models.

The study used a two-way mixed-design analysis of variance with a within-between- subjects approach to examine the effect …

Assessing The Influences Of Electronic Flight Bags On General Aviation Single Pilots’ Situation Awareness In Various Conditions, Dongguang Yu

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The widespread adoption of Electronic Flight Bags (EFBs) among general aviation pilots prompts safety concerns regarding transitioning from traditional, heavily loaded paper-based flight bags. However, studies evaluating the impact of EFBs on general aviation pilots’ situation awareness are limited. This study aimed to determine whether EFBs enhanced or hindered general aviation pilots’ situation awareness.

The research compared EFBs with traditional paper-based flight bags to investigate pilots’ situation awareness in a single-pilot flight deck under visual flight rules, normal and emergency flight scenarios, and different mounting positions. A sample of 38 participants was recruited, including flight students, flight instructors, and retired …

In-Situ Characterization And Machine Learning Applications For Composite Processing, Pragathi Agraharam Chan

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Numerous aircraft and spacecrafts utilize carbon fiber-reinforced polymer structures to significantly enhance their operational efficiency and overall performance. Autoclave composite processing offers a solution for the intricate design of complex structures. However, the rapid temperature and strain fluctuations experienced during the processing gives rise to a multitude of defects and residual stresses in the composite. In this study, we have devised an in-situ methodology that leverages Digital Image Correlation (DIC) and Machine Learning Applications to effectively observe and track defect deformations occurring throughout the process. This process presents a dataset derived from the curing process of 40 carbon fiber-reinforced polymer …

Measuring The Ion Temperature Of A Plasma Jet Undergoing Instability-Driven Heating, Mario Avila Oct 2024

Measuring The Ion Temperature Of A Plasma Jet Undergoing Instability-Driven Heating, Mario Avila

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Outlined are arrangements to measure the ion temperature of a plasma jet undergoing instabilities and an examination of experiment findings. The jet, formed by puffing a controlled amount of Nitrogen or Argon gas into Embry-Riddle's cylindrical vacuum chamber and then ionizing it via high-voltage electronically switched capacitor banks, is regulated to undergo three distinct instability regimes, stable, current-driven, and pinched (or detached), dependent on the voltage of an externally applied bias field and initial conditions. Ion temperature measurements of plasma are inferred through analysis of the Doppler-broadening observed spectroscopically at relevant wavelengths. To improve measurements, this arrangement implements a unique …

Ridds: Removal Of Irregular Debris Using Double Nets, Kayann Coote Oct 2024

Ridds: Removal Of Irregular Debris Using Double Nets, Kayann Coote

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The quantity of debris in Earth’s orbit is increasing at an alarming rate, and without a sustainable solution, this will detriment the space environment, impacting the future of space travel and space traffic management. While numerous debris removal concepts and designs have been proposed, very few have made it to actual flight tests, and none can remove debris at a fast enough rate to stop debris growth. For debris currently in orbit, most proposed systems are costly on a large scale and cannot adapt to the wide variety of debris shape and geometry and tumbling. The purpose of the proposed …

Assessing The Impact Of Femur Morphological Variations On Pediatric Hip Joint Biomechanics Using Statistical Shape Modeling, Tamara Chambers Oct 2024

Assessing The Impact Of Femur Morphological Variations On Pediatric Hip Joint Biomechanics Using Statistical Shape Modeling, Tamara Chambers

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

This dissertation aimed to (1) quantify morphological variations in the pediatric hip joint and (2) evaluate the sensitivity of an infant musculoskeletal model (MSM) to these variations, considering hip joint center estimation errors. A shape statistical model (SSM) of decedent infant femurs from the Ortolani collection was created using ShapeWorks, capturing key morphological features, such as variations in the femoral neck-shaft and anteversion angles. Seven synthetic femurs were generated from the SSM to create SSM-informed MSMs, which were systematically evaluated through kinematics and kinetics analyses in OpenSim. Incorporating the SSM led to slight changes in the pediatric MSMs’ kinematics but …

Dynamic Estimation Of Large-Scale Flow Events In Open Cavity Flows, Alexandre Mota Oct 2024

Dynamic Estimation Of Large-Scale Flow Events In Open Cavity Flows, Alexandre Mota

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Flow over an open cavity has a dynamically complex flowfield, generating pressure fluctuations that can amplify shear stress and cause structural damage to the stores within it and the aircraft as a whole. These pressure loads are linked to large-scale resonant shear layer phenomena. Consequently, it is crucial to establish this link by characterizing the large-scale flow events conditional upon pressure measurements to improve the prediction and control of the detrimental pressure fluctuations. In this study, a link between the pressure measurements (to control) and large-scale shear layer events (to actuate) will be established using a combination of two data-driven …
