From Theory To Screen: Strain In The Gallagher Experience, Caroline H. Peabody

This paper applies Agnew’s General Strain Theory to the hit television series Shameless (US), primarily focusing on three of the show’s central characters. The paper argues that the characters’ criminal and deviant actions can be attributed to strain, as defined by Robert Agnew’s General Strain Theory (GST). The paper provides a basic overview of GST as well as a synopsis of the show before implementing the theory into an analysis of the show. In addition, this paper explores how criminality highlights the themes of Shameless and acts as an implicit call to action to address strain variables in underprivileged communities. …

In September of 2023, a middle school teacher wrote an open letter to the Lexington County, Virginia school board expressing outrage over the “graphic sexual content” included in the county middle school’s library. Swiftly following the letter, the school board removed two books from the county’s Lylburn Middle School library without due process and avowed to reconsider the guidelines for including books in the library. One of the two books in question was It’s Perfectly Normal, a non-fiction illustrated book intended to educate readers ten and up on sex, intercourse, and puberty. Importance: 1 in 5 children in the US have a mental health disorder (Larson et al., 2017) which affects health across the lifespan, including engagement in school and play (Rizvi et al., 2024).

Objective: This systemized review explored literature about the effectiveness of mental health interventions for children and adolescents within the occupational therapy (OT) scope of practice.

Data Sources: A medical librarian searched articles from 2019-2024 that were retrieved from PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycINFO.

When the Aurora supercomputer launches at Argonne National Laboratory it will operate at the exascale and be one of the fastest supercomputers in the world. We have been invited by Argonne to do field work to understand both the day-to-day processes that maintain supercomputing (e.g. user documentation, government reporting, user testing) and the sociotechnical national imaginaries [11], –in particular the increasingly tense global competition between the US and China in the supercomputing race–that shaped the development of Aurora. The Surveys of Strength initiative is intended to give our GU students, staff, and faculty the space to express themselves and draw attention to isolating experiences regarding cancer, sexual assault, disability, and immigration. Each section of this collection will begin with a statistical report and then responses to questions that were posed in each survey. These responses should remind us that we are part of a larger community, not only within Gonzaga but within the human race as well.

Summer literacy interventions offer a solution to the devastating impacts that summer literacy loss can have on struggling readers and writers. However, these interventions should consider the impact of student attitudes towards literacy on their learning and strive to develop positive associations between literacy and enjoyment. Camp Curious, a summer literacy intervention developed as a collaboration between the Virginia Association of Teachers of English and Shrine Mont, a retreat and conference center, embodies this idea. The intervention, in the form of a week-long camp experience, strives to provide third through sixth graders with positive and varied experiences related to literacy. …

This research explores the multifaceted factors influencing the development of mathematical competence through a combination of cognitive, psychological, and sociocultural frameworks. The study aims to address how genetic predispositions, nurturing environments, teaching methods, and societal influences interact to shape mathematical abilities. Using insights from genetic research, cognitive psychology, and education theory, we analyze the role of effective teaching methods, such as active knowledge construction and differentiated instruction, in fostering mathematical skills. Increasing the predictability of severe convective storms (SCSs) over extended time ranges (i. e. >8 days) is of utmost importance to forecasters, as modern numerical weather prediction (NWP) models exhibit little skill at this lead time. Analogs have been used to predict temperature and rainfall anomalies at this time range for decades, though modern developments in analog forecasting uses techniques such as analog ensembles to increase the skill of analog models. It Takes A Village: Investigating How Community And Cultural Factors Foster Resilience In Latine Immigrant Families, Mara Makasiar

Latine immigrants constitute the largest group of non-U.S.-born individuals in the United States and face heightened risks including poverty, inadequate healthcare, discrimination, and acculturation-related stressors. Despite these challenges, many demonstrate resilience, achieving positive outcomes for themselves and their children. This study investigated how community and cultural factors foster resilience in Latine immigrant families, addressing a gap in understanding protective mechanisms beyond individual and family levels. Using a mixed-methods approach, quantitative analyses (N=89) revealed that immigration-related stress significantly predicted caregiver mental health problems (β = 0.35, p < .01), while financial satisfaction emerged as a protective factor (β = -0.35, p < .01). For youth, ethnic identity predicted prosocial behaviors (β = 0.35, p < .01), and emotion regulation consistently predicted self-esteem (β = 0.40, p < .01) and mental health problems (β = -0.54, p < .01). Contrary to hypotheses, community factors (collective efficacy, religious social capital) and cultural cohesion did not significantly predict outcomes beyond individual and family factors. Qualitative interviews (n=30) provided context, revealing themes of resource access barriers, multifaceted support systems, cultural maintenance, and community involvement. These findings highlight the complex interplay of factors influencing resilience in Latine immigrant families and underscore the need for more nuanced measures of community and cultural influences. The study contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of resilience processes in this population, with implications for developing culturally sensitive interventions and policies to support Latine immigrant families' well-being.

Muscle Contributions To Cardiac Function And Exercise Abilities In Patients With Fontan, Michael J. Danduran

Single ventricle anatomy is the most severe of the congenital heart defects (CHD) requiring a palliative process resulting in complete cavopulmonary flow and a single designated ventricular pumping chamber. The final step of palliation, the Fontan, has become the namesake for this population of CHD patients. Despite improved survival, individuals with Fontan experience long-term sequelae that includes decreased exercise capacity. Inadequate venous return and diminished cardiac output are primary causes of exercise intolerance in patients with Fontan. The peripheral muscle pump’s ability to augment venous return is not fully understood. Impaired Fontan circulation may result in muscle hypoperfusion atrophy, yet …

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of the Cover, Copy, Compare (CCC) strategy on teaching writing personal information to middle school students with intellectual disability. Four female students, aged between (12-15) years, participated in the study. A multi-probe design across participants was used to examine the effects. Results indicated that using this strategy was an effective method for facilitating the acquisition of the skills as all participants were able to write their information in three consecutive sessions with (100%). Maintenance data showed that the skill level was sustained, with average percentages ranging from (66%-100%). In …

This brief Essay progresses in four parts. I will first argue that climate change is impacting the Court’s decisionmaking. Next, I will show that the significance of climate change as a modern political issue has caused the Court to downplay the statutory arrangement Congress created in the Clean Air Act. Third, I will suggest that the Court is not genuinely failing to appreciate the design of the Clean Air Act. Instead, the Court is aware of that design and feels the design goes beyond a constitutionally acceptable delegation of legislative power. In Samia v. United States, the United States Supreme Court grappled with whether the admission of a nontestifying codefendant’s redacted confession that implicates a nonconfessing codefendant violates that nonconfessing defendant’s right to confront opposing witnesses. The Court’s majority framed this issue as a conflict between defendants’ rights and judicial economy and then declared judicial economy the winner. This resolution threatens to elevate governmental interests over defendants’ rights to face their accuser and to test opposing witnesses’ memory and sincerity. Moreover, and perhaps more importantly, in holding that introducing such a confession does not violate the Confrontation Clause, the Court endangers …

Fer is a French variety known to produce concentrated wines of good colour with a medium to full body. Wine aroma and flavour are typified by dark fruits and spice with soft tannins.

Fer grapevines were evaluated for fruit and wine production in Manjimup from 2007 to 2010.

Fer was found to be late ripening when grown here although it showed good disease resistance.

Two rehydration protocols currently exist to treat diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in pediatric patients aged"one-bag" system and the more recent "two-bag" system. This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the newer two-bag system versus the well-established one-bag system. The CiNAHL, Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were comprehensively searched from inception to June 2023 by 2 independent reviewers using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis framework. BACKGROUND: Advances in plasma biomarkers to detect Alzheimer’s disease (AD) biology allows researchers to improve the efficiency of participant recruitment into preclinical trials. Recently, protein levels of plasma amyloid-beta and tau proteins have been shown to be predictive of elevated amyloid in brain. Online registries, such as the Alzheimer’s Prevention Trials (APT) Webstudy, include and follow participants using remote assessments to facilitate efficient screening and enrollment of large numbers of individuals who may be at higher risk for AD.
