Spot form net blotch (SFNB) has become increasingly more common in Western Australia (WA) due to the widespread cultivation of susceptible varieties, such as Spartacus CL and RGT Planet.

These crops generate large amounts of inoculum, which is carried between seasons on infected stubble. Crops grown onto or located close to infected stubble are at greatest risk of infection. The disease can be effectively managed using a combination of varietal selection, crop rotation, and fungicides.

Engineering Ceramic Ductility Into Aluminum Oxide, Krish Bhuva

This project explores the enhancement of ductility in Aluminum Oxide (Al₂O₃) ceramics through microstructural engineering. The goal is to combine the hardness and stability of Al₂O₃ with enhanced ductility for diverse industrial applications. Inspired by the naturally occurring Itacolumite rock, known for its complex microstructure, this research aims to replicate similar microstructural features in engineering ceramics. By doping Al₂O₃ with Titanium Dioxide (TiO₂), Boron Nitride (BN), and a pore former, while employing innovative sintering techniques, we hypothesize that these modifications will lead to a measurable increase in ductility. Understanding The Influence Of Bone Marrow Endothelial Cells On Primary Human Megakaryocytic-Erythroid Progenitor Cell Fate, Vedaamrutha Reddy

The human bone marrow is a complex microenvironment comprised of hematopoietic, stromal, and bone marrow endothelial cells (BMECs). This study builds on previous findings to explore the regulatory role of BMECs in influencing the expansion and lineage choice of megakaryocytic-erythroid progenitors (MEPs). Understanding these interactions has the potential to advance transfusion medicine and improve treatments for conditions like thrombocytopenia and anemia. Due to complications with isolating human BMEC, we transitioned to a murine model. Murine BMECs were isolated and magnetic cell separation was employed to enrich for endothelial cells (ECs), which were then cultured over a 20-day period using standard …

Retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) are central nervous system projection neurons essential for transmitting visual information from the eye to the brain. Damage to RGCs, caused by conditions such as glaucoma and traumatic optic neuropathy (TON), may lead to vision loss or blindness, as adult RGCs lack regenerative capacity. This study focuses on Nfe2l3 (Nrf3), a developmentally downregulated transcription factor known to mediate cellular responses to oxidative stress, a key pathological event following optic nerve injury. We hypothesized that overexpressing Nfe2l3 in RGCs would enhance their survival and promote axon regeneration after optic nerve crush (ONC) injury. To test this, we …

Multidimensional scaling (MDS), in which high-dimensional data is projected to a lower dimensional map, is often followed by clustering in the reduced plot. To examine the effect of MDS on clustering, we simulate several data structures and apply clustering methods, including topological data analysis. We first perform clustering using the data in the original, high-dimensional space, then perform MDS to scale the data down to a lower dimension, cluster on this scaled data, and compare differences in the results. We found that MDS can often decrease clustering performance, and is unable to correctly represent data structures with unique shapes or …

At present, the most successful AI technique is deep learning -- the use of neural networks that consist of multiple layers. Interestingly, it is well known that neural networks with two data processing layers are sufficient -- in the sense that they can approximate any function with any given accuracy. Because of this, until reasonably recently, researchers and practitioners used such networks. However, recently it turned out, somewhat unexpectedly, that using three or more data processing layers -- i.e., using what is called deep learning -- makes the neural networks much more efficient. Songs for Dead Sailors is a psychological exploration of love and loss in the era of tall ships; a song cycle about leaving a home and loved ones, to journey with no promise of a return. The work was scored for a sextet of improvising musicians and reflects my interest in the creative process and my experiences teaching creative practice research. Sustainable Machine Intelligence Journal

This study aims to apply image classification and semantic segmentation methods using deep learning for accurate and efficient tumor detection in brain MRI data. It looks at ways to get over issues including interpretability of the model and a lack of annotated data. A pre-trained VGG19 model and a basic convolutional neural network (CNN) were trained using a public dataset of 273 brain MRI images for the purpose of image classification. Techniques for regularization, transfer learning, and data augmentation were used. A U-Net architecture was trained using manually created masks from the same dataset for semantic segmentation, with several training …
