Social Comparison And Self-Determination In Luxury Consumption Motivations, Maria Petrescu, Jose Ribamar Siqueira, Costinel Dobre, Selima Ben Mrad, Anca-Milovan Ciuta, Aycan Kara

This study integrates social comparison theory and self-determination theory to examine the roles of escapism, conformity, and individual cultural values in shaping luxury brand attitudes. Concepts related to consumer upward and downward social comparison are complemented by aspects related to self-determination and autonomy. Drawing on survey data from the United States and Colombia, the research employs partial least squares structural equation modeling and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to investigate the complex drivers of luxury consumption. The findings reveal that escapism and conformity, complementary motivations grounded in social comparison and self-determination theories, positively influence luxury brand attitudes. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the already elevated stress levels among teachers, leading to contemplation of leaving the profession. As educators were compelled to transition to online teacher, they suddenly found themselves immersed in the households of their students, an entirely novel experience. Background/Objectives: This study investigates whether there is an increased propensity to systemic conditions in patients with both age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma in order to provide greater insight into patients’ overall health and response to physiologic stress. Methods: A large retrospective dataset review was conducted between April 2004 and June 2018, distinguishing four groups based on international classification of diseases (ICD) codes: glaucoma only, AMD only, glaucoma and AMD, and cataracts only (as an age-matched control). This study investigates the printability limitations of 3D-printed continuous 316L stainless steel fibre-reinforced polymer composites obtained using the Materials Extrusion (MEX) technique. The objective was to better understand the geometric printing limitations of composites fabricated using continuous steel fibres, based on a combination of bending stiffness testing and piezoresistive property studies. The 0.5 mm composite filaments used in this study were obtained by co-extruding polylactic acid (PLA), with a 316 L stainless steel fibre (SSF) bundle. Global supply chains have vulnerabilities, and these escalate in crisis times like pandemics or wars. Digital twinning of supply chains can provide early alerts and timely interventions. We examined three companies in different industries using Digital Twin (DT) technology to improve their supply chain performance. We found that while DT successfully enhanced performance indicators, the dollar and time costs were significant, creating barriers to wider DT adoption. We conclude by outlining the positives and negatives of implementing Digital Twins in global supply chains.

A 2024 book titled “How Sanctions Work, Iran and the Impact of Economic Warfare” by Narges Bajoghli, Vali Nasr, Djavad Salehi-Isfahani, and Ali Vaez argues that sanctions have had no impact on the behavior of the Islamic Republic in Iran (IR hereafter) and have instead inflicted pain on the ordinary Iranians. While the book does offer a useful description of the evolution of the sanctions against the IR, it fails in its analysis and conclusions.

With many employees now working from home at least some of the time, manager-employee relationships are also changing. Through the lens of Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) theory we propose that remote work may have hidden costs for employees. We argue that remote workers are more likely to have transactional relationships with their managers, missing out on the benefits associated with high-quality LMX exchanges. This research has important implications for both employees and organizations as they navigate the challenges of a remote workforce.

More and more, economic research makes uses of administrative panel data, which provide long time-series of highly accurate data, but lack some of the supplemental questions found in surveys. I use data from the Current Population Survey, which includes a short panel, to test whether these supplemental survey questions intrinsically contain unique information or serve as proxies for information that can also be gleaned from panel data. In particular, I forecast an individual worker's future unemployment status with and without information on each individual's recent past, and decompose the variance of the predictions in each case.

This paper conceptualizes the prosocial orientation of the firm. With the ever-increasing contribution of firms toward social good, it is helpful to have a single concept that incorporates the social acts that a firm engages in. The prosocial behavior of a firm originates from the motives of society, decision-makers, stakeholders, and employees. A conceptual model of these relationships portends the benefits that accrue to the firm in its relationships with its suppliers, employees, customers, shareholders, and the government. However, managers are advised to be careful and avoid the incidence of free riding that such an interpersonal concept can engender.
