Correctly predicting the playing frequencies of a musical instrument is dependent on the length of the resonator with the addition of an end correction. There are multiple theories describing this end correction, perhaps the simplest being that the end correction of a pipe is a physical extension of the sinusoidal pressure standing wave inside the pipe. However, recent optical imaging of the flow in a flue organ pipe found an unexpected exponential decay of pressure just outside of the pipe. This work looks to validate those findings acoustically. The transplantation of non-human organs into humans, or xenotransplantation (XTx), has recently garnered new attention and is being developed to help address the problem of organ scarcity in transplantation. Ethical issues surrounding XTx have been studied since initial interest arose decades ago and have experienced renewed discussion in the literature. However, the distinct and relevant differences when applied to children has largely been overlooked with few groups attending to the concerns that XTx in children raises. Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

PDE11A4 is a target of interest for the treatment of age-related memory disorders. A previous report from our laboratories described an amide series of potent, selective PDE11A4 inhibitors that was metabolically unstable. Investigation of heterocyclic amide isosteres for the labile amide moiety revealed distinct structure-activity relationships and identified several compounds with potency comparable to the amide series. This manuscript describes the characterization of structure-activity and structure-property relationships in this set, leading to the identification of an orally bioavailable, brain-penetrant, selective and potent PDE11A4 inhibitor. Italian Railroad, Construction And Timber Laborers In The Lake Superior Basin And Michigan, 1880s-1920s, Russell Magnaghi

Upper Country: A Journal of the Lake Superior Region

What follows is an overview of the Italian story scattered across the Lake Superior region in the states of Wisconsin and Minnesota and the Canadian province of Ontario and finally the state of Michigan. The role of the unskilled laborer seeking work on rail lines and other construction jobs that started in the 1880s came to an end by the 1920s when railroads no longer needed large numbers of construction crews.

The narrative will begin by focusing on railroad laborers in the Lake Superior basin, but the majority of the story will be centered in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. …
