Two novel quaternary oxyarsenides, Eu8Zn2As6O and Eu14Zn5As12O, were synthesized through metal flux reactions, and their crystal structures were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. Eu8Zn2As6O crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbca, featuring polyanionic ribbons composed of corner-shared triangular [ZnAs3] units, running along the [100] direction. The structure of Eu14Zn5As12O crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2/m and its anionic substructure can be described as an infinite “ribbonlike” chain comprised of [ZnAs3] trigonal-planar units, although the structural complexity here is greater and also amplified by disorder on multiple crystallographic positions. In both structures, the O2- anion occupies an octahedral …

Joint Modeling Of Degradation Signals And Time-To-Event Data For The Prediction Of Remaining Useful Life, Sebastian Brumm, Erik Linstead, Junde Chen, Narayanaswamy Balakrishnan, Yuxin Wen Oct 2024

Joint Modeling Of Degradation Signals And Time-To-Event Data For The Prediction Of Remaining Useful Life, Sebastian Brumm, Erik Linstead, Junde Chen, Narayanaswamy Balakrishnan, Yuxin Wen

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Accurate prediction of remaining useful life (RUL) for in-service systems plays an important role in ensuring efficient operation of industrial equipment and in preventing unexpected equipment failures. In this paper, we present a prognostic framework for real-time RUL prediction based on joint modeling of both degradation signals and time-to-event data. The proposed model employs a change point-based general path model to capture signal non-linearity and Neural network (NN) based Cox model to link the time-to-event data with the estimated degradation trend. An empirical two-step scheme for hyperparameter estimation is proposed to enhance prognostic accuracy. Furthermore, an efficient Bayesian model updating …

Progress And Prospects Of Road Engineering Disease Treatment Technology In Permafrost Regions, Gao Feng, Zeng Xianzhang, Zhong Wenhua, Huang Shengyong, Zhang Junhui

Journal of China & Foreign Highway

Freeze-thaw disasters are key issues affecting the service performance and operational safety of road projects in permafrost regions.Under the combined influence of warming and humidification of the permafrost environment and engineering thermal effects, the degradation of permafrost is accelerating, exacerbating the risk of road freeze-thaw diseases.Roads in these regions are more frequently maintained and repaired to ensure service performance, with a service life lower than designed. Therefore, deepening the understanding of the disaster mechanism of road geotechnical structures and strengthening the study on engineering disease treatment technology are of great significance in promoting the construction and maintenance of high-quality and high-grade highways in frozen regions. This …

Model Test On Soil Deformation Mechanism And Damage Mode Caused By Mud Leakage From Drilled Piles In Karst Area, Jiang Mingying, Chen E ’Mei, Liu Yongcheng, Zhu Yadong, Jiang Wenkui, Xie Ruiting

Journal of China & Foreign Highway

Pile holes are often drilled through cavities in karst areas, which induces mud leakage and causes hole wall instability, ground collapse,or equipment trapping and hinders smooth construction. It is important to know the collapse mechanism of boreholes due to mud leakage,so as to optimize and determine the construction process of pile holes. In this paper, indoor model tests were used to study the deformation mechanism and damage mode of soil caused by drilling through cavities and mud leakage in pile holes under the conditions of upper clay and lower sandy soil in the karst area,so as to provide an experimental basis for the decision of …

Deformation Measurement And Safety Warning Of Highway Bridges Based On Machine Vision, Su Ziyue, Du Wenkang, Lei Dong

Journal of China & Foreign Highway

The structural safety of highway bridges plays a crucial role in traffic safety operations and regional economic development.Due to the rapid increase and complex changes in traffic loads, the demand for real-time monitoring of bridge ’s structural deformation and safety conditions has been increasingly prominent. However, the structural health monitoring system, dominated by contact sensors, has limitations such as difficult installation and construction, complicated maintenance and replacement, and the need to interrupt traffic. To this end,a non-contact deformation measurement system based on machine vision was proposed.Template matching and feature point recognition methods were utilized to achieve recognition of structural surface markings and displacement extraction of key positions. The accuracy …

BACKGROUND: Rezafungin is an echinocandin approved in the US and EU to treat candidaemia and/or invasive candidiasis. This post-hoc, pooled analysis of the Phase 2 STRIVE and Phase 3 ReSTORE trials assessed rezafungin versus caspofungin in patients with candidaemia and/or invasive candidiasis (IC) in the intensive care unit (ICU) at randomisation.

METHODS: STRIVE and ReSTORE were randomised double-blind trials in adults with systemic signs and mycological confirmation of candidaemia and/or IC in blood or a normally sterile site ≤ 96 h before randomisation. Data were pooled for patients in the ICU at randomisation who received intravenous rezafungin (400 mg loading …

We examined receipt of general early intervention services and autism-specific specialized services across demographic groups among toddlers with autism diagnoses who were receiving Part C Early Intervention (EI). Latent class analysis (n = 508) identified five demographically distinct subgroups associated with intersecting marginalization and privilege. Analyses of longitudinal parent interviews (n = 225) revealed service receipt disparities across these demographically distinct latent classes; children from White, U.S. born, English-proficient parents with incomes above poverty level received more EI services (M = 12.0 h/week) than other subgroups, with children from Latiné immigrant families receiving the fewest hours ( …

Exploring The Interconnectivity Between Soilless Substrate Hydraulic Properties And Plant Root Morphology, Kristopher S. Criscione Oct 2024

Exploring The Interconnectivity Between Soilless Substrate Hydraulic Properties And Plant Root Morphology, Kristopher S. Criscione

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Horticultural container production heavily relies upon porous soilless substrates to mass produce specialty crops. Soilless substrates are responsible for continuously maintaining optimal water, mineral nutrients, and air balances to promote healthy root growth and support productive shoot yield (foliage or fruit). Increasing evidence of substrate research continues to highlight the strong relationships associated with root development and substrate physiochemical properties. Despite the importance of the root system for overall plant health, most horticultural research to-date has focused on shoot development. Research tends to report total root biomass as the primary root-growth metric; however, this results in several developmental features becoming …

Modern Lakeshore Processes And Historic Lake And Glacial Changes In Taylor Valley, Antarctica, Michael Stanley Stone Oct 2024

Modern Lakeshore Processes And Historic Lake And Glacial Changes In Taylor Valley, Antarctica, Michael Stanley Stone

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Taylor Valley, which opens to the Ross Sea, is one of several ice-free valleys comprising the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica. The valley is home to several close-basin, perennially ice-covered lakes, whose lake levels largely reflect a balance between meltwater inputs and lake ice ablation; both being driven by climate. A dynamic environment exists where the lake ice covers meet the lakeshore, with the ice grounding to the substrate throughout the cold and dark of winter, and melting to form a perimeter of thin-to-no ice around the lake during the summer. These marginal freeze-thaw regions are known as moats. Here, physical, …

Defining The Scope Of Section 1 Of The Federal Arbitration Act: Recent Judicial Interpretations And Implications For The Gig Economy, Charlie Wiener Oct 2024

Defining The Scope Of Section 1 Of The Federal Arbitration Act: Recent Judicial Interpretations And Implications For The Gig Economy, Charlie Wiener

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution (CJCR) Blog

Section 1 of the Federal Arbitration Act states that “nothing herein contained shall apply to contracts of employment of seamen, railroad employees, or any other class of workers engaged in foreign or interstate commerce.” Since the turn of the millennium, the courts have found reason to define the exact limits of the scope of this exception. Notably, Circuit City Stores v. Adams, 532 U.S. 105 (2001), held that the exception in Section 1 must be read narrowly only to include transportation workers, otherwise the enumeration of seamen and railroad employees would not make sense.

The print edition of the issue …

China's Response To The U.S. Call For Decoupling: The Foreign Investment Law Of 2020, Daniel C. Chow

Washington International Law Journal

Abstract: In response to the U.S.’s calls for U.S.-China decoupling by repatriating U.S. business operations and eschewing new investments in China, China introduced the Foreign Investment Law (“FIL”) in 2020. The FIL marks a new era of foreign investment in China. It eliminates the requirement of prior government approval for all foreign-funded enterprises, including joint ventures consisting of U.S. companies and domestic Chinese state-owned enterprises. Many U.S. companies found the approval process under the previous legal regime to be time consuming, arduous, and oppressive. This process has now been replaced by a simple registration process under the FIL and the …

In The Eye Of Ai: Conspiracies Of Facial Recognition Software, Kira Courtois, Rachel M. Schneider, Carleigh J. Davis Oct 2024

In The Eye Of Ai: Conspiracies Of Facial Recognition Software, Kira Courtois, Rachel M. Schneider, Carleigh J. Davis

English and Technical Communication Faculty Research & Creative Works

The intersections of power and conspiracy rhetorics represent complexities for scholars who seek to understand social engagement and its various discursive properties. Our study addresses these complexities through the lens of facial recognition technology (FRT), analyzing how conversations on the platform X (formerly Twitter) surrounding FRT mirror discourse in other places that have been called conspiracy theories. By gathering Tweets that contain discourse about FRT and coding them using features synthesized from previous literature, we work to understand the ways that populations express valid feelings of disenfranchisement through traditionally conspiratorial rhetorical tropes. Our results highlight the importance of traditionally conspiratorial …

In two recent instances, the IRS has asserted the economic substance doctrine (ESD) to challenge transactions that comply with the literal text of the code. First, in Liberty Global, the IRS successfully asserted the ESD to deny tax benefits claimed by Liberty Global — namely, a section 245A deduction for a dividend out of foreign earnings that would normally be subject to global intangible low-taxed income — by relying on a mistake in effective dates under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. In granting summary judgment, the district court held that the doctrine looks to whether the tax benefits achieved …
