Using Multifactorial Interventions To Prevent Elderly Hospitalized Patients With Mental Health Disorders From Falling, Joseph R. Giancola Oct 2024

Using Multifactorial Interventions To Prevent Elderly Hospitalized Patients With Mental Health Disorders From Falling, Joseph R. Giancola

General Submissions: Clinical Settings Materials

Patients have ethical and legal rights to expect their environment is safe when they are hospitalized. A component of environmental safety is the duty of hospitals to anticipate the occurrence of patient falls and make reasonable efforts to prevent them. Falls during hospitalization radically increase physical, mental, and practical costs for patients, caregivers and hospitals. Elderly hospitalized patients with mental health disorders present a particularly difficult challenge for prevention advocates. This writer introduces a newly developed fall risk assessment tool called the Fall Geriatric Assessment and Intervention Tool (FALL GAIT). The FALL GAIT links patient fall risk factors with evidence-based …

Therapeutic Environmental Effects On Analgesic Requirements In Post Anesthesia Care Unit Phase I, Donna C. Kent, Shirley Mae Timmons

General Submissions: Clinical Settings Materials

The noisy and brightly lit environment in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) Phase I has the potential to agitate the arousing post anesthesia patient, delay recovering to an awake state, and could increase the need for analgesia medications. An experimental study was conducted in a community hospital PACU to determine the effects of a therapeutic environment (I.E. low lights and decreased noise) on analgesic requirements and satisfaction of patients recovering from surgery. Patients who had the quieter and darker environment did require less analgesic medications (reduced lighting p=0005; t= -21.54; mean difference -298.0249; reduced noise exposure p=0.005; t=-3.855; mean …

Reading In Frames: A Guide For Homiletics, Mason Lee Oct 2024

Reading In Frames: A Guide For Homiletics, Mason Lee

Discernment: Theology and the Practice of Ministry

The past thirty years have witnessed an explosion in volume of work produced within Homiletics. The sheer variety of topics, questions, themes, orientations, and points of emphasis can make it intimidating for a working preacher to engage in these resources or know where to begin. The options seem too broad; the approaches, issues, and resources so diverse as to become unwieldy. Said differently, those of us within the field of Homiletics are prone to look upon this expansion as a form of “Pentecost” in which the diversity is a gift that can lead one to better preaching. Yet the question …

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling

Despite efforts to decolonize and diversify the counseling profession, individuals with marginalized identities continue to encounter harmful experiences, requiring urgent and intentional action by counselor education programs to respond to these challenges. Recent legislative efforts have had a detrimental impact on marginalized communities, including those who identify on the spectrum of womanhood, immigrants, people of color, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and/or questioning, intersex, asexual, and/or two-spirit (LGBTQIA2S+), emphasizing pre-existing forces of power, privilege, and oppression embedded in academia. In search of a liberatory framework to address these forces, the authors apply Peters and Luke's (2022) Principles of Anti-Oppression to …

The Culturally Informed-Social Justice School Counselor Supervision Model, Mariama C. Sandifer, Malti Tuttle, Melissa Mecadon-Mann, Katrina D. Wilson

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling

School counselors cultivate spaces of equity and inclusion for all students however, many school counselors lack preparedness to fulfill these responsibilities. During training programs, school counseling graduate students are provided practical opportunities to develop skills to examine school policies and practices. However, site supervisors are not always adequately prepared or trained regarding the theory and practice of supervision to facilitate fieldwork experiences. Program faculty are called to provide support for site supervisors to strengthen their ability to fulfill this role. The authors discuss and outline their designed comprehensive culturally informed, social justice-oriented supervision model for school counselor site supervision and …

Enhancing Cultural Competence In Counselor Education Through Sociolinguistic Awareness, Jessica Haas, Diane D. Walsh, Marisa Marroquin

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling

Language plays a central role in building a therapeutic working alliance. Language is essential in building trust, conveying empathy, and creating shared meaning between counselors and clients. Nevertheless, language can equally harm the working alliance if used insensitively or without awareness of cultural and social differences. Sociolinguistic awareness emphasizes the interpretational nature of language and how it can unintentionally perpetuate discrimination against marginalized identities. Counselor educators can utilize sociolinguistic principles to model and teach the significance of language in counseling and its relationship to multicultural competency and cultural humility. The article highlights how clients' language may connect to their social …

Beyond The Standards: A Qualitative Analysis Of Perfectionism Among Master’S-Level Counseling Students, Sara E. Ellison, Jessica M. Tyler, Malti Tuttle

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling

This study investigates how perfectionism in counselor training impacts the relationships between students and clients/supervisors and contributes to imposter syndrome, burnout, and social disconnection. Using a transcendental phenomenological approach, we explored the experiences of perfectionism among 13 master’s counseling students during their graduate training. Four key themes emerged from the data analysis: (a) striving for enoughness, (b) masking inadequacy, (c) embracing vulnerability, and (d) connecting with authenticity. The implications of these findings for graduate training programs are discussed, emphasizing the specific needs of students grappling with perfectionism.

“Showing Up”: An Autoethnographic Exploration Of Black Women’S Teaching Mentorship Narrative In Counselor Education, Brean'a M. Parker, Shawntell Pace, Collette Chapman-Hilliard, Raven Cokley

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling

While Black women are entering academe at increasing rates, they still remain underrepresented in the counselor education academic workforce. Empirical literature suggests that lack of educational infrastructure, challenging sociocultural climates and fewer possibility models within academe are factors for low matriculation of Black women doctoral students into academic positions in counselor education. Utilizing collaborative autoethnography (CAE), we explore teaching mentorship relationships among Black women (N = 4) counseling faculty and doctoral students. We also examine how mentoring relationships shape Black women’s professionalization within academe in a manner that fosters the embodiment and practice of social justice andragogy. CAE narratives revealed …

Excellence And Evidence In Staffing, Kathy Douglas Oct 2024

Excellence And Evidence In Staffing, Kathy Douglas

Sigma Resource Papers

Staffing in hospitals and healthcare systems is complex, increasingly regulated, and closely associated with patient safety... Consequently, healthcare administrators are under pressure from insurers, patient advocates, unions, and state and national governments to define, secure and assure effective, safe, cost-effective staffing...

An issue that aΩects an organization so pervasively, cries out for definition. So this quest began by asking “What is excellent staffing?” And then, “How do we know when we’ve achieved it?” Investigation into these questions generated a lot of interest, but few answers. Thus the decision to convene an invitational conference that would bring a broad spectrum of …

The Burden To Reach The Ballots: Tackling Eleventh Circuit Line-Warming Bans And Their Intersectional Harm Under An Ada Framework, Alyssa Clune

Fordham Law Voting Rights and Democracy Forum

Line-warming bans present an additional hurdle for voters across America, especially in an era of historically few polling locations and historically long lines to reach the ballot. Particularly in Eleventh Circuit states like Georgia and Florida, line-warming bans, in conjunction with long wait times, have had a disparate impact on Black communities and their ability to cast ballots in key swing districts. Nevertheless, attempts to bring racial discrimination claims against these bans have not been successful in the Eleventh Circuit. This Essay proposes a new strategy to tackle line-warming bans under an ADA framework. It analyzes the harm that these …

Reforms For Filling Vacancies In The U.S. Senate And House Of Representatives, Nora Donnelly, Alexa Green, Lea Vallone Oct 2024

Reforms For Filling Vacancies In The U.S. Senate And House Of Representatives, Nora Donnelly, Alexa Green, Lea Vallone

Fordham Law Voting Rights and Democracy Forum

Many states’ laws for filling vacancies in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives weaken democratic legitimacy. Vacancies in the House are increasingly prolonged, leaving constituents without representation for extended periods. Senate vacancies are filled more quickly, but gubernatorial appointees often gain a significant incumbency advantage when they later seek election. In this report, the Fordham Law School Rule of Law Clinic recommends holding open, nonpartisan elections, without primaries or runoffs, within three months of most Senate and House vacancies, with earlier initiation when vacancies are anticipated. The report further proposes limiting interim Senate appointments to “caretakers” who serve only …

Unequal Access: The Perpetual Struggle For Voting Rights And The Case Of Wisconsin, Benjamin Edelstein, Mark L. Thomsen, Atiba R. Ellis Oct 2024

Unequal Access: The Perpetual Struggle For Voting Rights And The Case Of Wisconsin, Benjamin Edelstein, Mark L. Thomsen, Atiba R. Ellis

Fordham Law Voting Rights and Democracy Forum

In this Article, we examine the transformation of Wisconsin from a state celebrated for its progressive voting laws to a focal point for stringent voting restrictions. This shift mirrors a recurring pattern in American history where progress in voting rights is often countered by strategies aimed at preserving existing power structures. We trace this pattern through American history, highlighting the role of white supremacy and structural racism in continuously reshaping the boundaries of electoral inclusion and exclusion. Wisconsin’s situation is a stark example of how contemporary legal and political tactics to limit access to the ballot box continue a long …

The disposal of heavy metals from various activities has become a pervasive issue. The investigation of sustain-able, low-cost adsorbents for the remediation of these hazardous pollutants has been widely disregarded. This research emphasizes the recovery of selenium ions from contaminated water using lemon peels as a cost-effective adsorbent. The adsorption was explored in a batch unit under various operational parameters, including initial selenium concentration (1-90 ppm), pH (1-11), agitation speed (100-500 rpm), adsorbent dose (0.4-5.5 g), contact time (5-180 minutes), and temperature (25-55 °C). The BET surface area of the lemon peels was found to be 27.86 m²/g before adsorption …

A Max-Min Two-Group Contest With Binary Actions And Incomplete Information À La Global Games, Davide Bosco, Mario Gilli, Andrea Sorrentino Oct 2024

A Max-Min Two-Group Contest With Binary Actions And Incomplete Information À La Global Games, Davide Bosco, Mario Gilli, Andrea Sorrentino

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In this paper we introduce incomplete information à la global games into a max-min two-group contest with binary actions and we characterize the set of equilibria. Depending on whether the complete information assumption is relaxed on the value of the prize or on the cost of providing effort, we obtain different results in terms of equilibrium selection: in the first case, there exists both an equilibrium in (monotonic) switching strategies and an equilibrium robust to incomplete information in the sense of Kajii and Morris [1997], in which no player exerts effort in both groups, whereas in the second one there …
