Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

BACKGROUND: Medically tailored meal (MTM) programs provide home-delivered meals to people living with serious illness and poor nutritional status. Client outcome studies have found evidence of decreased healthcare utilization and cost savings associated with MTM program participation, and inconclusive evidence of change in health measures. The purpose of this study was to use a novel observational framework to describe the client profile and change in health outcomes using routinely collected health and program data from a community-based MTM program at MANNA (Philadelphia, PA).

METHODS: Clients reported their self-rated health and experiences of food insecurity and malnutrition. Healthcare providers reported clients' …

The Wallet And The Gut: Forecasting The 2024 Presidential Election With A State-By-State Adaptation Of The Time-For-Change Model, Simeon A. Betapudi, Hadassah Betapudi Nov 2024

The Wallet And The Gut: Forecasting The 2024 Presidential Election With A State-By-State Adaptation Of The Time-For-Change Model, Simeon A. Betapudi, Hadassah Betapudi

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

This study adapts Abramowitz's Time-for-Change model to a state-level framework to forecast the 2024 U.S. presidential election. The Time-for-Change model’s focus on the popular vote has become less relevant in recent years, given the growing divergence between popular vote outcomes and electoral college results. Our model addresses these issues by adapting the original Time-for-Change predictors (presidential approval rating, GDP, and time in office) to the state level. Using data from five election cycles (2004–2020), we employ an Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression to predict incumbent two-party vote share. Unlike the original model, state-level GDP and incumbency duration were found to …

Lived Experiences Of Seeking Mental Health For Students In Rural North Dakota, Chaleigh Pedrini-Clark Nov 2024

Lived Experiences Of Seeking Mental Health For Students In Rural North Dakota, Chaleigh Pedrini-Clark

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The need for mental health support and services is global in nature. While there is considerable research on mental health, student mental health, and the importance of mental health, little empirical research has been conducted on rural student mental health in the United States. The qualitative study utilized a phenomenological systems approach to explore the experiences of seven rural North Dakotan young adults, aged 18-27, in their attempts to locate appropriate mental health services while they were in high school. Through semistructured virtual interviews, these lived experiences were explored with six female and one male participant, with a focused perspective …

Staff Education On Effective Communication Techniques, Victorine Kebei Tangwa

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The doctor of nursing (DNP) staff education project took place in a group home with staff who care for six individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities. A gap in practice related to ineffective communication between staff and individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities was identified. The practice focused question attempted to answer whether educating staff on effective communication would increase staff knowledge. The purpose of this project was to educate staff on the ability to communicate effectively with individuals. The literature supported the need for the project. Nine nurses voluntarily participated in the project. After receiving the ethics approval from …

Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Kindergarten Through Grade 12 Education Leaders’ With Digital Transformation Strategies During And Post Covid-19, Vilma Tannisha Ramirez

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The rapid spread of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 in March 2020 had a profound impact on global kindergarten through Grade 12 (K–12) education, causing significant disruption to the learning environment and compelling many education leaders to immediately embrace emergency remote learning measures. There was a gap in knowledge of education leaders’ lived experiences of this transformation. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of U.S. K–12 education leaders in creating digital transformation strategies during the wake and aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. The conceptual framework consisted of Trist and Bamforth’s sociotechnical subsystem theory and Wade’s …

Staff Education Project To Train Providers On The Use Of The Sbar Communication Tool To Improve Reimbursement Rates, Teona Natoya Eririogu Nov 2024

Staff Education Project To Train Providers On The Use Of The Sbar Communication Tool To Improve Reimbursement Rates, Teona Natoya Eririogu

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

In this doctoral project, I focused on educating healthcare staff on using the situation-background-assessment-recommendation (SBAR) communication tool to improve documentation practices and reimbursement rates from Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance companies. My goal for the project was to determine if training on the SBAR tool would improve healthcare providers' knowledge of how to use it for documentation. The facility had experienced significant financial losses, exceeding $1 million in the last two quarters of 2023, due to inadequate documentation. Inaccurate or incomplete documentation, particularly in medical records, hinders the ability to bill appropriately for services rendered, impacting patient care and financial …

The Plasma Proteome Reveals Markers Of Recent And Repeated Stress In Free-Ranging Seals, Jessica G. Avalos, Cory D. Champagne, Dan E. Crocker, Jane I. Khudyakov Nov 2024

The Plasma Proteome Reveals Markers Of Recent And Repeated Stress In Free-Ranging Seals, Jessica G. Avalos, Cory D. Champagne, Dan E. Crocker, Jane I. Khudyakov

Pacific Faculty Work

Animals in nature potentially experience multiple stressors, and those of anthropogenic origin are likely to be repeated or chronic. However, stress hormone levels are highly context-dependent and are not consistent predictors of chronic stress in wildlife. Profiling the downstream consequences of repeated stress responses, such as changes in metabolism or gene expression, may be more informative for predicting their individual-level health consequences and population-level impacts, which are key objectives for wildlife conservation. We previously found that in free-ranging juvenile elephant seals, the blubber transcriptome and proteome, but not cortisol levels, could distinguish between responses to single versus repeated stress axis …

Bianchi, Fernanda S. Oda, Joanneliese De Lucas Freitas, Christine Rummel-Kluge

Pacific Faculty Work

Background The COVID-19 pandemic negatively affected students' mental health, increasing pre-existing psychosocial vulnerabilities. University students worldwide have presented differences in their mental health status; however, cross-country studies comparing students' mental health during the pandemic are lacking. Aims To investigate potential differences between university students from Brazil and those from Germany with respect to (a) depressive symptoms and alcohol and drug consumption, (b) social and emotional aspects (loneliness, self-efficacy, perceived stress, social support and resilience) and (c) attitudes towards vaccination. Method Two online cross-sectional studies were conducted with university students during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil (November 2021 to March 2022) …

Information Technology Managers’ Strategies For Implementing Data Governance, Dieudonne Mayi Nov 2024

Information Technology Managers’ Strategies For Implementing Data Governance, Dieudonne Mayi

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

As businesses increasingly view data as a strategic asset, effective data governance (DG) frameworks are crucial for ensuring data integrity and compliance. IT managers face challenges in fully integrating DG with IT governance, leading to issues like inconsistent data availability, compromised security, and costly outcomes such as data loss, legal actions, and compliance penalties. Grounded in Abraham et al.’s DG conceptual framework and Khatri and Brown’s unified DG framework, this qualitative pragmatic study investigates the strategies IT managers use to implement successful DG within organizations. A sample of 11 IT managers from U.S. companies with established DG practices participated in …

Head Start Administrators’ Perspectives Of Barriers And Facilitators To Implementing A Trauma-Informed Approach, Patricia A. Ulman Nov 2024

Head Start Administrators’ Perspectives Of Barriers And Facilitators To Implementing A Trauma-Informed Approach, Patricia A. Ulman

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Educators are increasingly using trauma-informed approaches to lessen the harsh effects of trauma on children. Although this practice is becoming more common in U.S. kindergarten through Grade 12 schools, it has been slow to reach the early care and education setting, which includes Head Start programs. Head Starts are encouraged to use a trauma informed approach, however, there is limited availability of resources to guide them. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the perspectives of administrators from Head Start programs located in a Midwestern state who have used a trauma-informed approach to understand the barriers and …

Alternative Splicing Is Coupled To Gene Expression In A Subset Of Variably Expressed Genes., Guy Karlebach, Robin Steinhaus, Daniel Danis, Maeva Devoucoux, Olga Anczuków, Gloria Sheynkman, Dominik Seelow, Peter N Robinson

Faculty Research 2024

Numerous factors regulate alternative splicing of human genes at a co-transcriptional level. However, how alternative splicing depends on the regulation of gene expression is poorly understood. We leveraged data from the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) project to show a significant association of gene expression and splicing for 6874 (4.9%) of 141,043 exons in 1106 (13.3%) of 8314 genes with substantially variable expression in nine GTEx tissues. About half of these exons demonstrate higher inclusion with higher gene expression, and half demonstrate higher exclusion, with the observed direction of coupling being highly consistent across different tissues and in external datasets. The exons …
